An ipa- causative normally contains three core roles: a causer who initiates or arranges the event, a causee who performs or experiences the embedded action, and a theme/patient affected by that action. The patient is the ang/si pivot, the causer takes ng/ni, and an expressed causee normally takes sa/kay.
This compact morphology leaves the social relation underspecified. Ipinagawa ni Lea kay Ruel ang mesa can describe a request, paid commission, instruction, or other arrangement. Context—not ipa- alone—tells whether Ruel volunteered, agreed, or was compelled. All unlabelled examples below are neutral contemporary Filipino.
Review valency and participant structure for the distinction between core participants and optional setting phrases.
Core valency frames
| Construction | Patient pivot | Causer | Causee |
|---|---|---|---|
| ipabasa | text with ang | ng/ni | reader with sa/kay |
| ipakain | food with ang | ng/ni | eater with sa/kay |
| ipalinis | site/object with ang | ng/ni | cleaner with sa/kay |
| ipagawa | task/object with ang | ng/ni | worker with sa/kay |
| ipatahi | garment/textile with ang | ng/ni | sewer with sa/kay |
| ipabili | purchased item with ang | ng/ni | buyer with sa/kay |
The causee is prototypically animate because it carries out an action. An organization or machine can fill the role when it is construed as an operative intermediary. Animacy does not determine pivot status: ipa- still selects the caused patient.
Mira had the child read the short story before bedtime.
Ni Mira is causer, sa bata caused reader, and ang maikling kuwento patient pivot. English calls both Mira and the child possible “subjects” of different clauses; Filipino encodes their roles inside one causative construction.
The manager had the team clean the corridor before the building was opened.
The institutional group is a common-noun causee and therefore takes sa, while the corridor is selected by ipinalinis.
Three voices over the same caused event
The root basa can organize a causative around three different participants:
Nagpabasa si Mira sa bata ng maikling kuwento.
Mira had the child read a short story.
Mira made the child read a short story.
Mira had the child read the illustrated short story.
Actor-voice nagpabasa selects causer si Mira. Causee-selecting pinabasa makes ang bata pivot. Causative patient-voice ipinabasa selects the story, leaves Mira as ni Mira, and marks the child with sa. Similar English translations do not make the Filipino forms interchangeable.
Directness, control, and social force
Ipa- does not itself distinguish direct physical assistance from an indirect request or paid service.
Rosa fed the baby the mashed squash.
Rosa may physically spoon-feed the baby; the baby is nevertheless the eater licensed by the causative frame.
Tomas had Mang Ernie repair the broken window.
This service context favors indirect causation: Tomas arranges the work, and Mang Ernie performs it. Neither sentence says whether the causee acted willingly. Add pinakiusapan, inutusan, pinilit, or a fuller clause when request, order, or coercion is central.
Causee omission and recoverable arguments
Ipinaayos namin ang bentilador bago nagsimula ang tag-init.
We had the electric fan repaired before summer began.
The repairer is omitted because only the completed service matters. The construction still implies an intermediary; omission does not convert ipinaayos into ordinary patient-voice inayos, which would more directly present the causer as repair actor.
—Naipagawa mo na ba ang sirang kandado? —Oo, ipinagawa ko kahapon.
—Have you managed to get the broken lock repaired? —Yes, I had it repaired yesterday.
The question uses attainment form naipagawa, while the answer uses ordinary completed causative ipinagawa. The locksmith is recoverable as an unspecified service provider.
Causee pivots and lexical overlap
With a transitive base such as basa, ipa- selects the distinct theme, while a causee-selecting causative can make the reader the pivot.
Mira had the child read a short story before bedtime.
Here ang bata is the caused reader and pivot, while ng maikling kuwento marks the reading material. The corresponding ipa- clause would instead select the story: Ipinabasa ni Mira sa bata ang maikling kuwento.
Do not turn that transitive contrast into a blanket ban on ipa- with intransitive roots. Established forms such as ipaupo/ipinaupo can select the person being seated.
The coordinator seated the guests in the front row.
Pinaupo is also common. This overlap is lexical; it does not mean that ipa- freely selects the causee with every root.
Specificity and discourse
The ipa- patient pivot is often identifiable or bounded because speakers are tracking the item to be read, repaired, bought, or cleaned. This is a discourse tendency, not an equation of ang with English the.
The clinic had Omar buy a device with a five-year warranty.
English uses a, but the relative description identifies the selected device and ipa- makes it pivot. Conversely, an omitted patient can remain understood in dialogue.
Lexicalization, productivity, and variation
A root is a family of constructions, and one citation form hides the derivational system. Transparent ipatahi relates readily to a caused sewing event. Frequent ipakita, ipakilala, ipaalam, ipaliwanag, ipamana, and ipadala have conventional meanings whose modern valency may no longer require a separately identifiable causee.
Productivity is real but not unlimited. Borrowed or novel roots can enter ipa- when speakers recognize a clear caused-patient frame, yet a mechanically possible form can remain rare or sound forced. Explicit expressions with sabihin, pakiusapan, utusan, hayaan, or pagawin are often clearer when the causative relation is socially or semantically complex.
Two reduplication strategies produce accepted forms such as ipinapagawa/ipinagagawa and ipapagawa/ipagagawa. Conversational omission of initial i- in begun forms occurs (informal), but it may collapse the contrast with causee-selecting pina- forms. Neutral formal and instructional writing benefits from preserving i-.
Common Mistakes
Giving both causee and patient ang marking
Incorrect — ipa- selects the story, so the causee child cannot also be pivot.
Mira had the child read the story before bedtime.
Swapping the causee and patient markers
❌ Ipinalinis ng tagapangasiwa ang pangkat sa pasilyo.
Wrong for the intended meaning — this marks the team as pivot and the corridor as oblique.
✅ Ipinalinis ng tagapangasiwa sa pangkat ang pasilyo.
The manager had the team clean the corridor.
Selecting the reader with an ipa- marker frame
Incorrect for the intended causee-pivot frame — ipa- selects the reading material, not the reader.
Celia had the elderly visitor read a letter beside the window.
Treating causation as one fixed English verb
❌ Palaging ‘force’ ang kahulugan ng ipa-.
Incorrect claim — ipa- does not itself encode force or coercion.
Ipa- can imply a request, an order, or arranging a service.
Key Takeaways
- Transparent ipa- causatives license a causer, a causee, and a caused theme/patient.
- The patient is pivot, the causer takes ng/ni, and an expressed causee normally takes sa/kay.
- Magpa-, causee-selecting causatives, and ipa- organize the same event around different pivots.
- Ipa- does not specify permission, coercion, payment, or directness; context supplies those readings.
- Lexicalization, argument omission, and accepted reduplication variation prevent mechanical one-affix/one-translation rules.
