Completed ipa- forms present a caused event as bounded or complete. The begun-event marker -in- occurs inside pa-, producing the surface sequence ipina-: ipabasa → ipinabasa, ipakain → ipinakain, ipagawa → ipinagawa. The caused theme or patient remains the ang/si pivot.
English often uses a past tense or present perfect to translate these forms, but completed aspect is not tied to one time. It describes the event as a whole relative to the relevant reference point. All unlabelled examples below are neutral contemporary Filipino.
See completed aspect for the same bounded-event logic across voice families.
Building the completed form
| Root | Basic | Completed analysis | Completed form |
|---|---|---|---|
| basa | ipabasa | i + p + in + a + basa | ipinabasa |
| kain | ipakain | i + p + in + a + kain | ipinakain |
| linis | ipalinis | i + p + in + a + linis | ipinalinis |
| gawa | ipagawa | i + p + in + a + gawa | ipinagawa |
| tahi | ipatahi | i + p + in + a + tahi | ipinatahi |
| bili | ipabili | i + p + in + a + bili | ipinabili |
| ayos | ipaayos | i + p + in + a + ayos | ipinaayos |
The analytical spaces reveal the morphemes but never appear in ordinary spelling. Do not place in before the whole word as inipagawa, and do not leave the basic prefix unchanged when a completed statement requires ipina-.
Ipinabasa ng abogado kay Celso ang kasunduan bago siya lumagda.
The lawyer had Celso read the agreement before he signed.
Ng abogado is causer, kay Celso causee, and ang kasunduan selected patient. Completed ipinabasa packages the reading as bounded.
Ipinakain ni Joy sa mga bisita ang natirang bibingka pagkatapos ng programa.
Joy served the guests the remaining rice cakes after the program.
Literally, Joy caused the rice cakes to be eaten by the guests. Natural English uses served or fed. The affix does not choose one fixed English verb.
Completed causation with an expressed worker
Ipinalinis ng punong-guro sa mga boluntaryo ang lumang silid-aralan.
The principal had the volunteers clean the old classroom.
Common-noun causee sa mga boluntaryo is oblique. The classroom—not the principal or volunteers—is the pivot.
Ipinagawa ni Celia kay Mang Ruel ang sirang tarangkahan sa likod ng bahay.
Celia had Mang Ruel repair the broken gate behind the house.
In repair contexts, ipinagawa often translates “had repaired.” The lexical root gawa is broad enough to cover doing, making, and arranging repair; the surrounding nouns establish the intended event.
Ipinatahi ni Nora kay Aling Cora ang damit na isusuot niya sa pagtatapos.
Nora had Aling Cora sew the dress she will wear at graduation.
The named sewer takes kay, while the dress is ang-marked. English learners commonly reverse those markers because English places the worker before the thing made.
Completed aspect and present results
Ipinaayos ko na ang preno, kaya ligtas nang gamitin ang bisikleta.
I've had the brake repaired, so the bicycle is now safe to use.
Particle na connects a completed repair to its current result. No separate Filipino present-perfect conjugation is needed.
A completed form can also be evaluated before a future event:
Kapag ipinakabit na natin sa elektrisista ang bagong ilaw, mas maliwanag na rito.
Once we have had the electrician install the new light, it will be brighter here.
The installation is complete relative to the predicted brighter state. Calling ipinakabit “past tense” would not account for this future-oriented sequence.
Controlled comparison with incompleted aspect
Ipinabili ni Lora kay Ben ang ekstrang toner kahapon.
Lora had Ben buy the extra toner yesterday.
Ipinapabili pa ni Lora kay Ben ang ekstrang toner dahil wala sa unang tindahan.
Lora is still asking Ben to buy the extra toner because the first shop did not have it.
Completed ipinabili presents the purchase arrangement as a bounded whole. Incompleted ipinapabili places the causative effort inside its development or repetition. The causer, causee, and patient roles remain constant.
Negation, questions, and a short exchange
Hindi ipinakuha ng tagapangasiwa sa drayber ang mga kahon dahil umuulan.
The manager did not have the driver fetch the boxes because it was raining.
Hindi negates completion. It does not remove -in- or turn the boxes into a non-pivot.
—Kanino ipinagawa ni Tess ang sirang makinang panahi? —Kay Mang Pilo, at natapos niya iyon kahapon.
—Who did Tess have repair the broken sewing machine? —Mang Pilo, and he finished it yesterday.
Kanino asks for the causee. The omitted machine in the answer is recoverable from the question.
Lexical restrictions and variation
The productive pattern coexists with lexicalized ipina- verbs. Ipinakita normally means “showed,” ipinakilala “introduced,” and ipinaalam “informed or made known.” A modern speaker need not construct these meanings online from cause + root.
Initial i- is sometimes absent in conversational begun forms (informal): pinagawa may be heard where a careful theme-selecting form is ipinagawa. Because pinagawa also participates in causee-selecting patterns, the shorter form can obscure the intended alignment. This guide keeps full ipina- in neutral writing and does not treat the reduction as interchangeable in every context.
Common Mistakes
Using the basic form for a completed report
❌ Ipagawa ni Lena kay Mang Tonyo ang estante kahapon.
Wrong for the intended completed report — ipagawa is the basic form.
✅ Ipinagawa ni Lena kay Mang Tonyo ang estante kahapon.
Lena had Mang Tonyo make the shelf yesterday.
Putting in- before the entire construction
❌ Inipagawa ni Raul kay Mang Tonyo ang mesa noong Lunes.
Incorrect — completed morphology appears inside pa-, producing ipinagawa.
✅ Ipinagawa ni Raul kay Mang Tonyo ang mesa noong Lunes.
Raul had Mang Tonyo make the table on Monday.
Giving the causee pivot marking
❌ Ipinatahi ni Nora si Aling Cora ang damit para sa pagtatapos.
Incorrect — the dress is the selected patient, so the named causee requires kay.
✅ Ipinatahi ni Nora kay Aling Cora ang damit para sa pagtatapos.
Nora had Aling Cora sew the dress for graduation.
Adding an English past ending
❌ Ipinalinis-ed ng punong-guro ang silid-aralan noong Sabado.
Incorrect — ipinalinis already expresses completed aspect.
✅ Ipinalinis ng punong-guro sa mga boluntaryo ang silid-aralan noong Sabado.
The principal had the volunteers clean the classroom on Saturday.
Key Takeaways
- Completed ipa- places -in- inside pa-, producing the written sequence ipina-.
- The caused theme remains pivot; the causer is ng/ni-marked and the causee normally uses sa/kay.
- Completed aspect marks boundedness, not one English past tense.
- Lexicalized forms and conversational reductions must be learned rather than generated mechanically.
- Record complete principal parts such as ipagawa—ipinagawa—ipinapagawa/ipinagagawa—ipapagawa/ipagagawa.
