Contemplated ipa- forms present a caused action as not yet begun. They omit begun-event -in- and use reduplication: ipagawa → ipapagawa/ipagagawa, ipabasa → ipapabasa/ipababasa. The caused theme remains the pivot, while the causer takes an ng/ni form and an expressed causee normally takes sa/kay.
English commonly translates contemplated aspect with will or going to. Filipino uses the same forms for plans, predictions, conditional consequences, and events viewed prospectively from an earlier time. All unlabelled examples below are neutral contemporary Filipino.
See contemplated aspect and future time for the larger distinction between event phase and calendar time.
Two accepted contemplated patterns
| Basic | Pa-copy variant | Root-copy variant | Selected pivot |
|---|---|---|---|
| ipabasa | ipapabasa | ipababasa | reading material |
| ipakain | ipapakain | ipakakain | food |
| ipalinis | ipapalinis | ipalilinis | thing or place cleaned |
| ipagawa | ipapagawa | ipagagawa | task or affected item |
| ipatahi | ipapatahi | ipatatahi | item sewn |
| ipabili | ipapabili | ipabibili | item bought |
Both columns represent accepted contemporary patterns. Preferences vary by speaker, root, and teaching tradition. Select one form; do not create a hybrid such as ipapagagawa. Neither variant is inherently more future than the other.
Plans and arrangements
Leah will have Mang Tonyo repair the roof next week.
The future time comes from sa susunod na linggo; ipapagawa marks the repair arrangement as unbegun. Leah is causer, Mang Tonyo causee, and the roof patient pivot.
The teacher will have Paulo read the first paragraph later.
This example uses the root-copy variant ipababasa. Pa-copy ipapabasa would express the same aspect and alignment for speakers who prefer it.
I will serve the guests the freshly cooked rice cakes after the ceremony.
Natural English uses serve. Filipino presents the rice cakes as the food to be caused to be eaten.
Conditions and projected consequences
We will have the volunteers clean the riverbank if the rain stops.
Inclusive natin includes the addressee among the causers. The condition does not change the patient pivot ang tabing-ilog.
The association will have Celso make an additional table if the number of participants increases.
Root-copy ipagagawa and pa-copy ipapagawa are accepted alternatives here. The choice does not change who makes the table or which participant is pivot.
A projected event from a past viewpoint
Dina thought the office would have Omar buy the new printer before the month ended.
The thought is past, while the purchase was still prospective from that past viewpoint. Contemplated ipabibili is therefore not simply a future tense measured from now.
Controlled comparison: command versus projection
Have Aling Minda sew the uniform now.
You will have Aling Minda sew the uniform on Monday.
Basic ipatahi forms a directive. Contemplated ipapatahi states or predicts an unbegun arrangement. Both can concern an action later than speech time, so English futurity alone cannot choose between them.
Negation, questions, and connected speech
Ramon will not have the novice carpenter repair the antique cabinet.
Declarative hindi negates the projected event. A prohibition would instead use huwag with the basic form: Huwag mong ipagawa...
—Kanino mo ipabibili ang mga gamot bukas? —Kay Liza, dahil daraan siya sa botika.
—Who will you have buy the medicines tomorrow? —Liza, because she will pass by the pharmacy.
Kanino asks for the causee. The medicines remain the selected pivot even though the answer omits them as recoverable information.
Lexical restrictions and accepted variation
Productivity does not erase lexical convention. Ipapakita normally means “will show,” ipapakilala “will introduce,” and ipapaalam “will inform.” Their current meanings are not always best analyzed as an instruction to a distinct causee.
The two reduplication patterns can also acquire different frequencies across roots. A form may be structurally possible yet much less usual than its competitor. This is genuinely difficult: dictionaries, edited texts, and native usage must supplement the rule. Do not claim that a single option is universally required.
Common Mistakes
Retaining completed morphology in an unbegun plan
Wrong for the intended unbegun plan — ipinagawa presents the arrangement as completed.
Leah will have Mang Tonyo repair the garage roof next week.
Incorrect — pa-copy applies once, producing ipapagawa.
The association will have Celso make the table on Tuesday.
Blending pa-copy and root-copy
Incorrect hybrid — choose ipapagawa or ipagagawa.
Ramon will have Joel repair the cabinet tomorrow.
Using a contemplated statement as a direct command
❌ Ipabibili mo kay Liza ang gamot ngayon!
Wrong as the intended direct command — ipabibili states a projected event.
✅ Ipabili mo kay Liza ang gamot ngayon!
Have Liza buy the medicine now!
Key Takeaways
- Contemplated ipa- omits begun -in- and uses pa-copy or root-copy reduplication.
- Both ipapagawa/ipagagawa and comparable variant pairs are accepted; hybrid forms are not.
- The category covers plans, predictions, conditions, and past prospective events—not only future tense.
- Commands and prohibitions use the basic form even when the action will occur later.
- The theme remains pivot, the causer is non-pivot, and an expressed causee normally uses sa/kay.
