Incompleted ipa- forms present a caused action as ongoing, repeated, habitual, or viewed before its endpoint. They contain begun-event -in- and reduplication, while the caused theme remains the pivot: ipagawa → ipinapagawa/ipinagagawa, ipabasa → ipinapabasa/ipinababasa.
The paired forms reflect two accepted strategies. One repeats the pa- portion; the other repeats the first consonant–vowel sequence of the root. Contemporary speakers differ, and some teaching traditions prefer the root-copy pattern. Neither pattern is an English present tense. All unlabelled examples below are neutral contemporary Filipino.
The general meanings of ongoing, habitual, and repeated events are developed in incompleted aspect.
Two accepted incompleted patterns
| Basic | Completed | Pa-copy variant | Root-copy variant |
|---|---|---|---|
| ipabasa | ipinabasa | ipinapabasa | ipinababasa |
| ipakain | ipinakain | ipinapakain | ipinakakain |
| ipalinis | ipinalinis | ipinapalinis | ipinalilinis |
| ipagawa | ipinagawa | ipinapagawa | ipinagagawa |
| ipatahi | ipinatahi | ipinapatahi | ipinatatahi |
| ipabili | ipinabili | ipinapabili | ipinabibili |
The variants express the same aspect and alignment in these ordinary uses. A speaker may favor ipinapagawa while another favors ipinagagawa. What is not standard is a blend such as ipinapagagawa, which copies both pa- and root material inside one form.
An action currently being arranged or carried out
Rina is having Mang Tonyo repair the roof while the weather is still dry.
The form can cover the arrangement and the repair process as one unfolding causative event.
The nurse is having the cleaner clean the room before the patient is transferred.
This sentence uses the root-copy variant ipinalilinis. The alternative ipinapalinis would preserve the same roles and event phase.
Cora is having Aling Selya sew the torn pillowcases this afternoon.
Ngayong hapon supplies the current time frame. The morphology itself contributes incompleted aspect rather than English present time.
Habitual and repeated causation
The teacher has Paulo read a science news article every Friday.
The root-copy form ipinababasa receives a habitual interpretation from tuwing Biyernes. English uses simple present; Filipino uses incompleted aspect because the caused reading recurs.
Minda feeds the children ripe papaya when it is in season.
The papaya is the selected food pivot. The children are causee-eaters, not a second pivot.
The cooperative has Dario buy the necessary parts at the end of every month.
Repeated procurement motivates incompleted ipinapabili. The institutional causer remains ng-marked despite being definite and identifiable.
Past ongoing context
Tessa was having Noel make the new cabinet when the power suddenly went out.
The completed event in the nang clause locates the ongoing causative in the past. Ipinagagawa does not contain a special past-progressive tense.
Controlled comparison with completed aspect
Mila had Ben get the box before the warehouse closed.
Mila is still having Ben fetch the remaining boxes from the warehouse.
Completed ipinakuha presents one retrieval as bounded. Incompleted ipinapakuha presents further retrievals as ongoing or repeated. Both keep the same causer–causee–theme alignment.
Negation, questions, and a short exchange
Omar is not having the staff clean the old warehouse while it still contains goods.
Negation denies the ongoing arrangement. It does not require the completed form or move the warehouse out of pivot position.
—Does the office still have Liza buy the older types of light bulbs? —Not anymore; a different model is now needed.
Particles pa and ba follow the incompleted predicate naturally. The reply uses hindi na to mark that the former practice has ended.
Lexical restrictions and variation
The two reduplication patterns are genuine variation, but lexical frequency matters. A very common verb may strongly favor one surface form in a speaker’s usage. Preserve the form found in careful contemporary sources rather than assuming every new ipa- coinage will sound equally natural under both patterns.
Some superficially similar forms are lexicalized: ipinapakita usually means “is showing,” and ipinapakilala “is introducing.” Their modern participant frames need not contain a separately expressed person who was instructed to perform the underlying root action.
Common Mistakes
Copying both pa- and the root
Incorrect blend — this form combines both accepted reduplication strategies.
Rina is having Mang Tonyo repair the roof now.
Root-copy ipinagagawa would also be acceptable here.
Mixing the two patterns inside palinis
❌ Ipinapalilinis ng nars sa tagapaglinis ang silid.
Incorrect hybrid — use ipinapalinis or ipinalilinis.
The nurse is having the cleaner clean the room before the doctor arrives.
Using completed aspect for a recurring practice
Wrong for the intended ongoing routine — ipinabili presents the caused purchase as completed.
The cooperative has Dario buy the parts every month.
Adding English agreement
Incorrect — Filipino aspect forms do not take English third-person -s.
The office has Liza buy light bulbs whenever the supply is running low.
Key Takeaways
- Incompleted ipa- combines begun-event -in- with reduplication.
- Pa-copy and root-copy variants are both accepted: ipinapagawa/ipinagagawa, ipinapabasa/ipinababasa.
- Ongoing, habitual, repeated, and past-background readings come from aspect plus context.
- The caused theme stays pivot; causer and causee marking remain stable.
- Do not combine both reduplication strategies or attach English tense and agreement endings.
