This reading is an original academic-genre pastiche written for this lesson. The city, study, participants, and findings are fictional; the passage neither quotes nor imitates a protected modern text. Its value lies in showing how familiar Filipino resources—voice, phrase markers, nominalization, aspect, and cautious reporting—work together in a compact research abstract.
For the wider register, first review Academic Filipino; the annotation below then shows those choices operating in one connected text.

Title: Mga Harding Pamayanan at Pagkaing Nasasayang sa Lungsod Malaya
Sinusuri sa pag-aaral na ito kung paano nakaaapekto ang mga harding pamayanan sa pagbawas ng pagkaing nasasayang sa tatlong barangay ng Lungsod Malaya.
This study examines how community gardens affect the reduction of food waste in three barangays of Malaya City.
Inihambing ang lingguhang tala ng dalawampu't apat na sambahayan bago itatag ang mga hardin at anim na buwan matapos magsimula ang pagtatanim.
The weekly records of twenty-four households were compared before the gardens were established and six months after planting began.
Dinagdagan ang mga talang ito ng panayam sa labindalawang kalahok tungkol sa kanilang pamimili, pagluluto, at paggamit ng tira-tirang pagkain.
These records were supplemented with interviews with twelve participants about their shopping, cooking, and use of leftover food.
Ipinahihiwatig ng mga paunang resulta na nabawasan ng halos isang-kapat ang karaniwang dami ng itinatapong pagkain, lalo na sa mga sambahayang regular na nagkokompost.
The preliminary results suggest that the average amount of discarded food decreased by nearly one quarter, especially among households that composted regularly.
Gayunman, hindi sapat ang bilang ng mga kalahok upang ilapat ang resulta sa buong lungsod.
Nevertheless, the number of participants is not sufficient for the result to be applied to the entire city.
Iminumungkahi ng pag-aaral na sabayan ng pagsasanay sa pag-iimbak at pagkompost ang pagtatatag ng mga hardin, at subaybayan ang mga epekto nito sa mas mahabang panahon.
The study recommends pairing the establishment of gardens with training in storage and composting, and monitoring their effects over a longer period.
Idiomatic English translation
Community Gardens and Food Waste in Malaya City. This study examines how community gardens affect food-waste reduction in three barangays of Malaya City. It compares the weekly records of twenty-four households before the gardens were established with records from six months after planting began. The records are supplemented by interviews with twelve participants about shopping, cooking, and the use of leftovers. Preliminary results suggest that average discarded food fell by nearly one quarter, particularly among households that composted regularly. The sample is nevertheless too small for the result to be generalized to the whole city. The study recommends combining garden development with training in food storage and composting, and monitoring the effects over a longer period.
The English version is intentionally idiomatic. It does not preserve every Filipino predicate order or repeat every marker, because an abstract is a connected argument rather than a word-for-word decoding exercise.
Sentence 1: naming the inquiry without inventing an English subject
The opening predicate sinusuri is an incompleted patient-voice form: the examining is presented as the study's ongoing scholarly activity. The phrase sa pag-aaral na ito gives the setting or domain of the examination. English strongly encourages “this study” as the grammatical subject, but Filipino need not force the study into an actor role. The embedded kung paano clause states the research question, while ang mga harding pamayanan is the pivot of nakaaapekto. Both occurrences of sa introduce the affected domain and location respectively.
Compare a grammatical actor-oriented paraphrase:
Sinusuri ng pangkat kung paano binabawasan ng mga harding pamayanan ang pagkaing nasasayang sa tatlong barangay.
The team examines how community gardens reduce food waste in three barangays.
Here ng pangkat marks the non-pivot examiner because sinusuri keeps the examined question implicit as its pivot. Inside the complement, binabawasan makes ang pagkaing nasasayang the patient pivot. The paraphrase is more agentive and less institutionally impersonal than the abstract's opening.
Sentences 2–3: method, chronology, and nominalization
Inihambing and dinagdagan are completed patient-voice forms. Method sections often foreground the material handled—ang lingguhang tala and ang mga talang ito—rather than the researchers. Omitting the human actor is not a defective passive copied from English; it is licensed Filipino discourse organization. The two time frames are built with bago plus a contemplated form (itatag) and matapos plus an actor-voice infinitive-like form (magsimula).
The sequence pamimili, pagluluto, at paggamit packages activities as nominal concepts. These forms carry verbal structure inside noun phrases: paggamit ng tira-tirang pagkain includes a non-pivot dependent marked by ng. The hyphen in tira-tira remains visible after the linker, producing tira-tirang.
The formation and clause-building possibilities of pag- receive fuller treatment in Nominalized Clauses with pag.
Nangalap ang mga mananaliksik ng lingguhang tala mula sa bawat sambahayan.
The researchers collected weekly records from each household.
This actor-voice alternative is natural, but it shifts attention from the records to ang mga mananaliksik. Academic Filipino uses both patterns; patient voice is a genre tendency, not an absolute rule.
Sentence 4: reporting evidence at the right strength
Ipinahihiwatig is incompleted and evidentially cautious: the results “indicate” rather than prove. Mga paunang resulta further limits the claim. Inside the complement, completed nabawasan presents an attained change, while ng halos isang-kapat is an ng-marked quantified extent phrase. A manner expression such as nang bahagya “slightly” would instead take adverbial nang.
The expression ang karaniwang dami ng itinatapong pagkain is layered. Ang introduces the pivot head dami; ng links that amount to the food; itinatapong is an incompleted patient-voice modifier whose -ng linker joins it to pagkain. The relative clause na nagkokompost then narrows mga sambahayan.
Pinatutunayan ng mga resulta na epektibo ang programa.
The results prove that the program is effective.
This stronger claim is grammatically sound but unjustified by the fictional preliminary evidence. Register competence includes choosing a predicate whose certainty matches the method.
Sentences 5–6: limitation before recommendation
Gayunman signals concession: the decrease is promising, yet the sample remains limited. Hindi sapat ang bilang is an adjectival predicate with no inserted copula. The purpose construction upang ilapat keeps the hypothetical generalization outside the realm of established fact. In the recommendation, iminumungkahi ng pag-aaral uses patient voice and a non-pivot source; the following na clause contains coordinated commands at an institutional level: sabayan and subaybayan.
The pronoun nito in mga epekto nito refers cohesively to the coordinated intervention, not merely to the nearest plural noun. Filipino singular genitive demonstratives can retrieve an event or proposal as one discourse unit.
Bagaman kapaki-pakinabang ang paunang datos, kailangan pa ng mas malawak na pag-aaral.
Although the preliminary data are useful, a broader study is still needed.
Here pa marks an unmet continuation: more research remains necessary. The sentence is a concise alternative to the passage's limitation-plus-recommendation sequence.
Controlled paraphrases: what changes and what does not
| Form | Discourse effect |
|---|---|
| Inihambing ang mga tala. | The records are the pivot; the researchers may remain unexpressed. |
| Naghambing ng mga tala ang pangkat. | The team is the pivot; the records are non-pivot material. |
| Paunang resulta lamang ang mga ito. | Lamang narrows the status of the findings. |
| Ang mga ito ay paunang resulta. | Ay creates marked topic–comment order, suitable when the referent is already contrastive. |
Naghambing ng tala ang pangkat, ngunit ang mga tala ang nananatiling sentro ng ulat.
The team compared records, but the records remain the center of the report.
This sentence makes the difference between grammatical pivot and broader discourse topic explicit. They often align, but they are not the same concept.
Common Mistakes
Treating the English subject as the required Filipino pivot
❌ Sinusuri ang pag-aaral na ito kung paano nakaaapekto ang mga hardin.
Incorrect for the intended meaning—the study is made into what is being examined, rather than the setting or source of the inquiry.
✅ Sinusuri sa pag-aaral na ito kung paano nakaaapekto ang mga hardin.
This study examines how the gardens have an effect.
Using adverbial nang before a quantified extent
❌ Nabawasan nang halos isang-kapat ang itinatapong pagkain.
Incorrect here—the quantified extent phrase requires ng, not adverbial nang.
✅ Nabawasan ng halos isang-kapat ang itinatapong pagkain.
The discarded food decreased by nearly one quarter.
Using the wrong relator after a source expression
❌ Batay ng mga paunang tala, lumiit ang basura.
Incorrect—batay requires sa in this construction.
✅ Batay sa mga paunang tala, lumiit ang dami ng basura.
Based on the preliminary records, the amount of waste decreased.
Overclaiming what limited evidence establishes
❌ Walang dudang pinatutunayan ng maliit na pag-aaral na ito ang bisa ng lahat ng harding pamayanan.
Misleading academic register—the categorical claim exceeds what a small study can establish.
✅ Ipinahihiwatig ng maliit na pag-aaral na ito na maaaring makatulong ang mga harding pamayanan.
This small study suggests that community gardens may help.
Key Takeaways
This abstract gains its academic character from an entire system, not from a list of technical nouns. Patient voice keeps methods and evidence prominent; ang, ng, and sa organize participants without copying English subject–object order; completed and incompleted aspect distinguish attained changes from ongoing analysis; and cautious predicates calibrate the force of each claim. Read the passage again as one argument, tracing what each sentence contributes to the next.
