The prefix pag- can package an action, process, or event as something a larger clause can locate, evaluate, cause, prevent, or discuss: sa pagdating ni Lina “upon Lina’s arrival,” ang pagbabasa ng mga bata “the children’s reading,” and dahil sa pagtaas ng presyo “because of the price increase.” At clause-combining level, these are not merely vocabulary items. They are nominalized structures that can retain event participants while occupying a noun-phrase position.
Nominalization changes the grammar. A finite verb presents aspect and voice and has an ang-marked pivot. A pag- nominal does not itself assert completed, incompleted, or contemplated aspect, and its participants are typically expressed with ng/ni or sa/kay phrases. English gerunds hide some of this change because “Lina arrived” and “Lina’s arriving” look similar; Filipino marking makes it visible.
For basic word formation before this clause-level analysis, see nominalization with pag-. The interaction between the surrounding predicate and temporal interpretation is developed further under aspect in subordinate clauses.
Core forms and functions
| Pattern | Typical function | Register/note |
|---|---|---|
| pag- + root | event or process: pagdating, pag-alis | productive but lexically restricted |
| pag- + reduplicated stem | ongoing, customary, or process reading: pagbabasa, pagsusulat | neutral; form depends on the verb family |
| sa + pag- nominal | during, in, or through an activity | neutral; frequent in formal prose |
| dahil sa / bago ang / pagkatapos ng + pag- nominal | cause or temporal relation | neutral to formal |
| pag- nominal + ng/ni actor | names the participant responsible for the event | may be ambiguous with other ng relations |
Spelling reflects the morphological boundary. A hyphen is conventional before many vowel-initial bases, as in pag-aaral, pag-uwi, and pag-alis. Consonant-initial forms are normally solid, as in pagdating and pagbasa. Reduplicated stems show their actual surface shape: pagbabasa, pagsusulat, pagluluto.
From an independent clause to a nominalized event
Compare an asserted arrival with the same arrival used as a time frame:
Dumating si Lina sa munisipyo bago magtanghali.
Lina arrived at the municipal hall before noon. (independent clause)
Pagdating ni Lina sa munisipyo, nakapila na ang mga aplikante.
When Lina arrived at the municipal hall, the applicants were already in line. (nominalized time frame)
The independent clause has actor-pivot si Lina and completed dumating. The time frame uses pagdating and marks the associated actor as ni Lina. The nominal does not say by itself whether the arrival is completed; the larger context and the main completed event establish the reading.
Pag-uwi namin mamaya, ihahanda agad namin ang mga gamit para bukas.
When we get home later, we will immediately prepare the things for tomorrow.
The same pag- frame can refer to an anticipated event. Mamaya and contemplated ihahanda locate it in the future. This is direct evidence that pag- is not a past or perfective prefix.
Participants inside the nominalization
An actor or possessor-like participant commonly takes ng or personal ni/nina:
Naantala ang paglalathala ng ahensiya ng bagong ulat.
The agency’s publication of the new report was delayed.
Here ng ahensiya is the publisher and ng bagong ulat is the material published. Two adjacent ng phrases can be grammatical yet difficult to process. In formal writing, recast when roles matter:
Naantala ang paglalathala ng bagong ulat dahil hindi pa ito inaprubahan ng ahensiya.
Publication of the new report was delayed because the agency had not yet approved it.
The finite causal clause explicitly identifies the approving actor. Nominalization is compact, but it can blur relations that voice would distinguish in a finite clause.
With a location, recipient, or other oblique participant, sa is normally retained:
Mahigpit ang pagbabantay ng mga guwardiya sa pasukan tuwing gabi.
The guards’ monitoring of the entrance is strict every night.
Ng mga guwardiya identifies the monitors; sa pasukan identifies the monitored location. Marker choice follows the relation expressed inside the nominal, not an English sequence of possessives.
Ambiguity and voice neutralization
The phrase pag-aaral ng bata can mean “the child’s studying” or, in a suitable technical context, “the study of the child.” The first is overwhelmingly likely in everyday use, but ng itself does not label a unique semantic role. A full clause can restore voice distinctions:
Sinusuri ng mga mananaliksik kung paano nag-aaral ang bata sa bahay.
The researchers are examining how the child studies at home.
If the child is the object of a study, say pag-aaral tungkol sa bata or use a finite patient/undergoer voice clause that names the researchers. There is no honest rule claiming that the first ng phrase is always the actor or that pag- preserves the voice of a corresponding finite verb unchanged.
Mahalaga sa amin ang pakikinig ng mga mag-aaral sa iba’t ibang punto de bista.
The students’ listening to different points of view is important to us.
This example illustrates a lexicalized formation: pakikinig, not a mechanically predicted pagkikinig, is the established event noun associated with makinig. Pag- nominalization is productive, but affix families and established words must be learned. Consult actual usage rather than stripping a finite verb and attaching pag- automatically.
Nominals as arguments and complements
A pag- phrase can be the pivot or a non-pivot argument of a larger predicate.
Ipinagbawal ng pamunuan ang paninigarilyo sa loob ng gusali.
The management prohibited smoking inside the building.
The lexical event noun is paninigarilyo, showing that not every English -ing complement has a transparent pag- + root form. It serves as the ang-marked patient of ipinagbawal.
Nakatulong sa akin ang pagsusulat ng tala pagkatapos ng bawat pulong.
Writing notes after every meeting helped me.
The entire phrase ang pagsusulat ng tala pagkatapos ng bawat pulong functions as the pivot of nakatulong. Internal ng tala marks what is written; pagkatapos ng bawat pulong locates the activity.
Questioning the event treats the nominal as a noun phrase:
Nakatulong ba sa pag-unawa mo ang muling pagbasa sa kontrata?
Did rereading the contract help your understanding?
The enclitic ba follows the first constituent of the larger clause. Muling modifies the nominalized event, and sa kontrata identifies the object of reading in this lexical construction.
Cause, time, and formal style
Nominalized clauses are common after relational expressions:
Dahil sa biglaang pagtaas ng tubig, lumikas ang mga residente bago maghatinggabi.
Because of the sudden rise in the water level, the residents evacuated before midnight.
In administrative and academic writing (formal/academic), strings such as sa pagpapatupad ng programa are frequent. They are useful when the event itself is the topic, but repeated nominalization can hide the responsible actor. Compare sa pagpapatupad ng bagong patakaran with the more explicit nang ipatupad ng konseho ang bagong patakaran.
—Ano ang ikinaantala ng biyahe? —Ang pagkasira ng bus sa may tulay.
—What delayed the trip? —The bus breaking down near the bridge.
The answer uses lexicalized pagkasira to name the event. It does not need a complete finite answer because the question establishes the larger relation.
Common Mistakes
Retaining the independent ang-form actor
❌ Pagdating si Lina, nagsimula ang programa.
Incorrect — si Lina belongs to an independent predicate, not this nominalized event frame.
✅ Pagdating ni Lina, nagsimula ang programa.
When Lina arrived, the program began.
Treating pag- as completed aspect
❌ Ang pag-alis niya bukas ay nangyari na.
Contradictory without a special quoted or hypothetical context — bukas anticipates an event, while nangyari na asserts that it has happened.
✅ Nakatakda bukas ang pag-alis niya.
His departure is scheduled for tomorrow.
Writing a vowel-initial formation without its standard hyphen
❌ Nakatulong ang paguusap namin sa tagapayo.
Incorrect spelling — the morphological boundary before the vowel-initial base must be visible.
✅ Nakatulong ang pag-uusap namin sa tagapayo.
Our conversation with the adviser helped.
Assuming every English gerund takes mechanical pag-
❌ Ipinagbawal ang pagsigarilyo sa loob.
Nonstandard formation — the established event noun is paninigarilyo.
✅ Ipinagbawal ang paninigarilyo sa loob.
Smoking was prohibited inside.
Key Takeaways
- Pag- nominalization lets an event fill a noun-phrase or relational-phrase position.
- Participants normally shift from independent ang/si marking to nominal ng/ni or oblique sa/kay marking.
- Time and aspect come from context; pag- is not a tense or completed-aspect marker.
- Ng relations can be ambiguous, and many event nouns are lexicalized rather than mechanically predictable.
