Academic Filipino

Academic Filipino is not conversational Filipino with rarer words. It is a repertoire for defining concepts, locating claims in evidence, distinguishing the writer's inference from a source's position, and guiding readers through a sustained argument. The grammatical foundation remains Filipino: predicate-first order is fully formal, voice determines participant marking, and verbal aspect does not become English tense.

Different disciplines and institutions make different terminology choices. Some publish almost entirely in Filipino; others define an English technical term once and retain it; many operate bilingually. The standard is purposeful consistency and reader access, not lexical purity.

Form and function

Academic taskTypical resourceFunction
state the research objectSinusuri ng pag-aaral...defines scope without personal narrative
attribute a positionAyon kay/sa...separates source from writer
base a claim on evidenceBatay sa datos...identifies evidential grounds
limit certaintymaaaring, ipinahihiwatigcalibrates strength of inference
organize argumentuna, samantala, gayunpaman, samakatuwidmakes relations explicit
define terminologyterm + concise definition/glossstabilizes meaning across the text

These resources are (academic/formal). No single connector makes a sentence scholarly; the argument must still support its claims.

Claims should reveal their evidential status

Academic prose distinguishes observation, inference, possibility, and established result. Compare a casual impression with an evidence-centered claim:

Parang mas kaunti talaga ang sumasakay kapag umuulan.

It really seems that fewer people ride when it rains. (informal impression)

Passenger records suggest that ridership decreases during heavy rain. (academic)

The academic version names the evidence and selects ipinahihiwatig, which does not overstate causation. Ipinakikita may suit a more direct pattern; pinatutunayan β€œproves” requires far stronger grounds.

Based on three years of data, trip length may be associated with frequency of absence.

Maaaring marks an appropriately limited inference. It does not mean that every academic sentence should hedge; established measurements can be stated directly.

πŸ’‘
Choose the verb of evidence to match the method: data may show, suggest, or support a claim, but it does not automatically prove a cause.

Attribution and the writer's voice

Use ayon kay for a named person and ayon sa for a document, institution, theory, or common-noun source. Follow the source phrase with a complete proposition.

According to Professor Mendoza, linguistic differences in each community must be considered.

According to the committee report, the current number of classrooms is insufficient.

An alternative reporting frame uses a verb plus na:

Binibigyang-diin ng mga mananaliksik na hindi magkasingkahulugan ang pagkakapantay at pagkakapareho.

The researchers emphasize that equality and sameness are not synonymous.

Do not combine ayon sa and a na complement as though they were pieces of one English β€œaccording to X that...” pattern. They are different Filipino frames.

Dense syntax must remain traceable

Academic Filipino permits nominalization and complex noun phrases, but density should expose relations rather than hide them. Pag-aaral, pagsusuri, pagpapatupad, and pagbabago package events as nouns; explicit markers and linkers keep their participants recoverable.

The study examined the effect of the schedule change on student attendance.

The chain is interpretable because each ng or sa relation has a clear head. A longer chain should be split if readers can no longer tell who changed what or whose attendance is measured.

Patient voice often lets academic prose maintain the object of analysis as pivot:

Inihambing ang mga tugon ng dalawang pangkat upang matukoy ang mga padron ng pagkakaiba.

The responses of the two groups were compared to identify patterns of difference.

Omitting the actor is legitimate when the procedure matters and the researchers are obvious. When responsibility or interpretation is contested, name the actor: Inihambing ng pangkat ng pananaliksik... Formal impersonality must not erase accountability.

Information structure and ay

Marked ay clauses can maintain a topic or contrast two categories, but they are not the default form of academic Filipino.

The first group was examined before the policy change; the second group, by contrast, was examined six months later.

The parallel topics justify ay. Predicate-first prose remains equally formal:

Lumilitaw sa pagsusuri ang tatlong pangunahing salik.

Three main factors emerge from the analysis.

This order introduces the result efficiently. Recasting every English subject-first sentence with ay creates translationese rather than sophistication.

Terminology and code-switching

Academic communities may choose a standard Filipino term, an established loan, or a deliberately introduced bilingual pair. On first mention, a concise gloss can stabilize an unfamiliar term:

Ginamit sa pagsusuri ang korpus, isang sistematikong kalipunan ng mga tekstong sinusuri sa pamamagitan ng kompyuter.

The analysis used a corpus, a systematic collection of texts analyzed by computer.

After defining korpus, use it consistently. Switching among korpus, corpus, database, and an improvised coinage without explanation makes the conceptual inventory unstable.

English terminology may be appropriate (academic, bilingual/technical) when a discipline uses it conventionally. The surrounding syntax should remain controlled, and the text should state whether an English label is a quoted term, a gloss, or the adopted term. See contemporary coinages and language planning.

πŸ’‘
Terminological consistency is more important than maximal translation. Define a defensible term, identify its domain, and keep one label for one concept.

Academic questions and discussion

Research questions often use kung, paano, bakit, or hanggang saan, embedded inside a statement of inquiry.

The study examines how travel time affects class attendance.

An academic discussion can challenge an interpretation respectfully and precisely:

β€”Maaari po bang linawin kung paano nakuha ang bilang na ito? β€”Oo. Hinango ito sa pinagsamang tala ng apat na paaralan.

β€”Could you clarify how this figure was obtained? β€”Yes. It was derived from the combined records of four schools.

Po and respectful ninyo can occur in spoken academic interaction, but a written article does not add po to claims. Politeness in prose comes from fair attribution, calibrated criticism, and explicit limitations.

A connected academic passage

First, the communities included in the study were identified. Next, the frequency of Filipino use at home and school was analyzed. Nevertheless, the study does not assume that all participants share one experience.

The passage sequences method, then states a limitation. Formal connectors work because each expresses a real logical relation, not because academic prose needs a connector in every sentence.

Common Mistakes

Combining ayon sa with a na complement

Incorrect β€” ayon sa requires a following proposition, while na belongs to a reporting-verb frame.

According to the researchers, the gap between the two groups widened.

Doubling the topic and pivot around ay

Incorrect β€” ang resulta and ang malaking pagbabago compete as pivots in the copied English frame.

The data show a substantial change in the result.

Using an English preposition frame after suriin

Incorrect β€” patient-voice sinuri requires the thing examined as its pivot, not a tungkol sa complement.

The team examined water use in the village.

Confusing evidence with proof

Incorrect evidential claim β€” two interviews cannot by themselves establish the stated nationwide cause.

The two interviews offer a preliminary perspective on a possible cause of the change.

Mixing an undefined English term into a Filipino-only argument

Incorrect academic formulation β€” the imported terms are undefined and the clause does not establish their conceptual relation.

The construct defined in the first section is the study's main variable.

Key Takeaways

  • Academic Filipino names evidence, source, inference strength, and logical relation explicitly.
  • Nominalization and patient voice support dense exposition, but actors should remain visible when accountability matters.
  • Ay organizes established topics and contrasts; it is not a badge of academic style.
  • Technical vocabulary may be Filipino, borrowed, or bilingual if it is defined and used consistently.
  • Contemporary Filipino is a repertoire: select resources for disciplinary precision and reader access, not for display.
