Halimbawa can be the noun “example” or a discourse marker meaning “for example.” As a discourse marker, it tells the listener that the next detail is an illustration of a broader claim—not a new cause, result, exception, or complete list. That coherence relation is more important than the nearest English translation.
Filipino also uses bilang halimbawa “as an example,” gaya ng and tulad ng “such as/like,” and the contracted formal pattern halimbawa’y. They overlap, but their grammar differs: halimbawa can frame a whole clause, while gaya ng/tulad ng normally introduce a noun phrase or another comparable constituent.
Core forms and their scope
| Form | Typical scope | Register |
|---|---|---|
| Halimbawa, + clause | the following proposition illustrates a general point | neutral |
| clause + , halimbawa, + phrase | a parenthetical example within the same sentence | neutral to careful |
| bilang halimbawa | explicitly presents a case as evidence or illustration | neutral to formal |
| halimbawa’y | contracted initial frame before a clause | formal/literary |
| gaya ng / tulad ng + noun phrase | introduces members of a category or comparison set | neutral |
For a reformulation that restates the same idea rather than illustrates it, use ibig sabihin or sa madaling salita.
From a generalization to a concrete case
A useful example must belong to the category or support the point just introduced.
Maraming paraan upang makatipid sa tubig. Halimbawa, maaaring ipunin ang tubig-ulan para sa pagdidilig.
There are many ways to conserve water. For example, rainwater can be collected for watering plants.
The second sentence instantiates maraming paraan. Halimbawa does not claim that rainwater collection is the only method.
May mga serbisyong maaaring asikasuhin sa barangay, halimbawa, ang pagkuha ng sertipiko ng paninirahan.
Some services can be handled at the barangay office, for example, obtaining a certificate of residency.
Parenthetical halimbawa narrows the scope to the following noun-like event. Commas help readers see that it comments on the example relation rather than functioning as an argument of the predicate.
Bilang halimbawa ng malinaw na babala, ipinakita ng guro ang karatulang ginagamit sa laboratoryo.
As an example of a clear warning, the teacher showed the sign used in the laboratory.
Bilang halimbawa explicitly assigns the sign the role of an example. This fuller form is useful when the sentence contains several possible relations.
Halimbawa versus gaya ng and tulad ng
Use gaya ng or tulad ng before a list or noun phrase that names category members.
Magdala ng gamit na panangga sa ulan, gaya ng payong o kapote.
Bring something that protects against rain, such as an umbrella or raincoat.
Kailangan sa gawain ang mga kasanayang tulad ng maingat na pakikinig at malinaw na pagsusulat.
The task requires skills such as careful listening and clear writing.
These phrases remain inside one noun phrase. By contrast, sentence-initial halimbawa can introduce a full assertion:
Mabilis magbago ang iskedyul sa panahon ng bagyo. Halimbawa, kinansela kahapon ang huling biyahe ng barko.
Schedules change quickly during typhoon season. For example, yesterday's last boat trip was canceled.
The voice and markers inside the example clause remain independent. Patient voice kinansela makes ang huling biyahe the pivot; halimbawa does not alter that grammar.
Using halimbawa before a short list is also possible, especially after a colon. The distinction is a strong tendency, not an absolute ban. Gaya ng/tulad ng integrate the examples syntactically; halimbawa manages the relation between larger stretches of discourse.
Formal and conversational presentation
Neutral halimbawa works in speech and writing. Contracted halimbawa’y is associated with planned exposition (formal/literary):
Halimbawa'y maaaring ihambing ang dalawang talaan ayon sa petsa at pinagmulan.
For example, the two lists may be compared by date and source. (formal)
The apostrophe represents the contraction with ay. It does not make inversion mandatory elsewhere. In a formal report, bilang halimbawa and halimbawa are often clearer than repeatedly using the contraction.
Conversation can make the example relation interactive:
—Anong uri ng pagkakakilanlan ang tatanggapin nila? —Halimbawa, puwede ang pasaporte o lisensiya sa pagmamaneho.
—What kind of identification will they accept? —For example, a passport or driver's license is acceptable.
The reply offers representative options. It does not necessarily give the complete official list, so the listener may still need to ask Iyon lang ba?
Negative examples can show where a generalization fails:
Hindi lahat ng murang bilihin ay praktikal. Halimbawa, hindi sulit ang sapatos kung isang buwan lang itong tatagal.
Not every inexpensive product is practical. For example, shoes are not good value if they last only one month.
The negative statement remains inside the example. Halimbawa itself does not carry negation.
Questions can also introduce an illustrative scenario:
Halimbawa, paano kung hindi dumating sa oras ang tagapagsalita?
For example, what if the speaker does not arrive on time?
This use is natural during planning: the question is one test case for a broader contingency plan.
Examples are not exhaustive lists
Halimbawa, gaya ng, and tulad ng usually signal an open set. If the list is complete, say so with ang mga sumusunod, lahat ng, or another explicit expression. Conversely, do not attach at iba pa mechanically to every example; the open-set inference may already be clear.
Tatlong dokumento lamang ang kailangan: kard ng pagkakakilanlan, katibayan ng tirahan, at resibo ng bayad.
Only three documents are required: an identification card, proof of residence, and the payment receipt.
There is no halimbawa here because tatlong...lamang promises a complete list. Adding “for example” would conflict with that promise.
Position and information flow
Initial Halimbawa, links backward to an earlier generalization and frames the whole next clause. Medial halimbawa normally has narrower scope. At paragraph level, the earlier claim must remain accessible; a marker cannot repair an example that has no identifiable general point.
In academic Filipino (academic), examples support analysis but do not replace evidence. Introduce the pattern, give the example, then state what feature it demonstrates. In conversation, intonation may mark the boundaries that commas show in writing.
Common Mistakes
Using halimbawa for a cause
❌ Naantala ang pagbubukas. Halimbawa, nasira ang pangunahing kandado.
Wrong coherence relation — the broken lock explains the delay; it is not merely an example of it.
✅ Naantala ang pagbubukas dahil nasira ang pangunahing kandado.
The opening was delayed because the main lock broke.
Using a noun-list connector before a full independent assertion
❌ Nagbabago ang presyo araw-araw, gaya ng tumaas ang halaga ng isda kaninang umaga.
Awkward — gaya ng normally introduces a comparable phrase, not this full illustrative assertion.
✅ Nagbabago ang presyo araw-araw. Halimbawa, tumaas ang halaga ng isda kaninang umaga.
Prices change every day. For example, the price of fish rose this morning.
Presenting a complete list as only an example
❌ Dalawa lamang ang pagpipilian, halimbawa, pula at asul.
Incoherent — halimbawa suggests an open illustrative set, while dalawa lamang promises a complete set.
✅ Dalawa lamang ang pagpipilian: pula at asul.
There are only two choices: red and blue.
Confusing exemplification with reformulation
❌ Hindi na bukas ang tanggapan—halimbawa, sarado na ito.
Wrong relation — sarado na ito restates the same fact rather than giving a distinct example.
✅ Hindi na bukas ang tanggapan—ibig sabihin, sarado na ito.
The office is no longer open—in other words, it is closed.
