gayunpaman: Concession

Gayunpaman is a concessive discourse connector: it acknowledges a fact that might normally support one conclusion, then maintains a different claim despite that fact. Depending on context, English translates it as nevertheless, nonetheless, or however. It is most at home in formal speech and writing.

Concession is more specific than ordinary contrast. In “The room is small; nevertheless, the meeting can be held there,” smallness creates an expectation that the room will be unsuitable. Gayunpaman rejects that expected inference without denying the smallness. This management of expectation is its defining work.

Bagaman + clause, main clauseBuilds the concession inside one complex sentenceformal

In contemporary standard spelling, gayunpaman is written as one word. The shorter gayunman is also established in formal prose. Neither form needs to agree with a noun, and neither determines aspect, voice, animacy, or definiteness inside the following clause.

Maliit ang silid para sa inaasahang bilang ng dadalo. Gayunpaman, maaari pa rin itong gamitin kung bubuksan ang katabing bulwagan.

The room is small for the expected number of attendees. Nevertheless, it can still be used if the adjacent hall is opened.

Hindi pa kumpleto ang tala mula sa dalawang lalawigan. Gayunman, malinaw na ang pangkalahatang direksiyon ng pagbabago.

The data from two provinces is not yet complete. Nonetheless, the overall direction of the change is already clear. (formal)

Both examples preserve the first proposition. The second proposition blocks an inference that might be drawn from it: small does not entail unusable; incomplete does not entail wholly uninterpretable.

💡
Identify the suppressed expectation: “Given P, one would normally expect not-Q.” Use gayunpaman when you assert Q while still accepting P.

Concession versus plain contrast

Plain contrast places two differences side by side. Concession adds an expectation that is overridden. Compare:

Pula ang lumang karatula, ngunit bughaw ang ipinalit dito.

The old sign is red, but the one that replaced it is blue.

Kupas na ang lumang karatula. Gayunpaman, nababasa pa rin nang malinaw ang nakasulat dito.

The old sign has faded. Nevertheless, what is written on it can still be read clearly.

Red and blue are simply contrasting properties. Fading, however, normally makes a sign hard to read, so the second example is concessive. Ngunit and subalit can also express concession in context, but gayunpaman more explicitly frames the whole preceding statement as an insufficient obstacle. See pero, ngunit, and subalit.

The connector generally appears at the start of a new sentence and takes a comma in edited prose. This placement gives it scope over the following proposition and makes the reasoning easy to track across sentences or paragraphs.

Tatlong beses nang ipinagpaliban ang pagdinig dahil sa sama ng panahon. Gayunpaman, nanatiling handa ang mga saksi na humarap sa lupon.

The hearing has already been postponed three times because of bad weather. Nevertheless, the witnesses remained ready to appear before the committee.

Formal and conversational alternatives

In everyday interaction, pero and kahit ganoon are usually more natural than gayunpaman. The formal marker is not wrong in speech, but it can sound prepared, official, or deliberately elevated.

Kaunti ang oras na inilaan sa konsultasyon. Gayunpaman, nakapagsumite ang bawat sektor ng detalyadong puna.

Little time was allotted for consultation. Nevertheless, every sector managed to submit detailed comments. (formal)

Kaunti lang ang oras natin, pero nakapagbigay naman ng komento ang lahat.

We had only a little time, but everyone was able to comment. (conversational)

The conversational sentence includes naman, which softens and balances the counterpoint. The formal sentence presents the same relation in a more detached way. Neither version is a word-for-word substitute in every genre.

Kahit ganoon explicitly means “even with things being that way.” It is useful when the speaker accepts a difficulty yet announces a decision.

Hindi sigurado kung darating ngayong linggo ang kapalit na piyesa. Kahit ganoon, sisimulan na namin ang ibang bahagi ng pagkukumpuni.

It is uncertain whether the replacement part will arrive this week. Even so, we will begin the other parts of the repair. (neutral/conversational)

Independent connector versus subordinate concession

Gayunpaman links discourse units that are structurally independent. Bagaman and kahit can introduce a subordinate concessive clause within one sentence.

Bagaman limitado ang badyet, naglaan ang konseho ng pondo para sa agarang pagkukumpuni.

Although the budget is limited, the council allocated funds for the urgent repairs. (formal)

Limitado ang badyet. Gayunpaman, naglaan ang konseho ng pondo para sa agarang pagkukumpuni.

The budget is limited. Nevertheless, the council allocated funds for the urgent repairs. (formal)

The truth conditions are close, but the discourse packaging differs. The two-sentence version gives the limitation its own assertion before overturning the expected consequence. The complex sentence backgrounds the limitation as a concessive frame. The kahit and bagaman page covers those subordinate patterns in detail.

Combining bagaman and gayunpaman in one sentence is heard in rhetorical formal prose, but it usually marks the same concessive relation twice. Clear modern prose normally chooses one frame unless the repetition is deliberate emphasis.

Questions, negatives, and stance

Because gayunpaman organizes propositions rather than clause type, it can introduce a question or a negative statement.

Mababa nga ang paunang gastos. Gayunpaman, sapat ba ang sampung taong garantiya para sa ganitong kagamitan?

The initial cost is indeed low. Nevertheless, is a ten-year warranty sufficient for this kind of equipment?

The particle nga concedes the first point as real. The question then challenges the inference that low cost makes the proposal satisfactory.

Nakapasa sa teknikal na pagsusuri ang panukala. Gayunpaman, hindi pa ito maaaring ipatupad hangga't walang pag-apruba ng konseho.

The proposal passed the technical review. Nevertheless, it still cannot be implemented without the council's approval.

The negative clause blocks a likely but premature inference from technical approval. The connector does not itself express doubt: it signals that the following claim holds despite the acknowledged information.

💡
Concessive markers are stance markers. By choosing gayunpaman, you temporarily grant the relevance of the other side's point and then show why it does not settle the issue.

Connected context

Ipinakita ng unang pagsusuri na mas mabilis ang bagong proseso. May ilang kawani, gayunman, na nag-ulat ng kalituhan sa mga bagong pormularyo. Gayunpaman, hindi inirerekomenda ng pangkat na ibalik ang lumang sistema. Sa halip, maghahanda sila ng mas malinaw na gabay at karagdagang pagsasanay.

The initial review showed that the new process is faster. Some staff members, however, reported confusion about the new forms. Nevertheless, the group does not recommend returning to the old system. Instead, they will prepare clearer guidance and additional training.

This paragraph demonstrates two possible placements. Initial Gayunpaman is the clearest default. Parenthetical gayunman after a constituent is possible in formal prose, set off with commas, but learners should not overuse it. The final sa halip supplies the alternative response; it is not another concessive marker.

Common Mistakes

Writing the standard form as separate words

❌ Gayun pa man, nagpatuloy ang pagsusuri.

Nonstandard spelling for the connector in contemporary Filipino.

✅ Gayunpaman, nagpatuloy ang pagsusuri.

Nevertheless, the review continued.

Gayunman is also an accepted shorter form, but gayun pa man should not be improvised as three separate words here.

Using concession for a same-direction addition

❌ Malinis ang kusina. Gayunpaman, maayos din ang imbakan ng pagkain.

Incorrect for the intended additive relation—an orderly storeroom does not override an expectation created by a clean kitchen.

✅ Malinis ang kusina. Bukod dito, maayos din ang imbakan ng pagkain.

The kitchen is clean. In addition, the food-storage area is orderly.

Using concession where the second event is a result

❌ May bitak ang tangke. Gayunpaman, itinigil muna ng tagapamahala ang paggamit nito.

Incorrect for the intended causal relation—the suspension follows because of the crack.

✅ May bitak ang tangke. Kaya itinigil muna ng tagapamahala ang paggamit nito.

The tank has a crack. Therefore, the manager temporarily stopped its use.

Doubling the concessive frame without a reason

❌ Bagaman maikli ang panahon ng paghahanda, gayunpaman, natapos ng pangkat ang ulat.

Needlessly heavy in ordinary modern prose—the concession is signaled twice.

✅ Bagaman maikli ang panahon ng paghahanda, natapos ng pangkat ang ulat.

Although the preparation period was short, the group finished the report.

An alternative correction is two sentences: Maikli ang panahon ng paghahanda. Gayunpaman, natapos ng pangkat ang ulat. That version gives the obstacle more independent weight.

Choosing however from the dictionary without a counterexpectation

❌ Nasa ikalawang palapag ang opisina. Gayunpaman, alas-otso ito nagbubukas.

Incoherent without special context—the location does not normally create an expectation about opening time.

✅ Nasa ikalawang palapag ang opisina. Samantala, nasa unang palapag naman ang tanggapan ng ingat-yaman.

The office is on the second floor. Meanwhile, the treasurer's office is on the first floor.

The correction changes the relation to spatial/discourse contrast. A dictionary synonym cannot substitute for the missing inference.

Key Takeaways

  • Gayunpaman means that the following claim holds despite an acknowledged obstacle or contrary expectation.
  • Gayunman is an accepted shorter formal variant; pero and kahit ganoon are more conversational.
  • Use bagaman or kahit to build concession inside a complex sentence.
  • Initial position plus a comma is the clearest default in edited prose.
  • Concession depends on an inferential relation, not merely on two different facts.
