ibig sabihin: Clarification

Ibig sabihin has several connected uses: it asks or states what an expression means, introduces a clarification or inference, and checks what another speaker intends. English uses mean across the same territory, but the Filipino patterns are structurally different. Ibig sabihin is not a verb that simply takes an English-style subject and object in every context.

As a discourse marker, Ibig sabihin, ... tells listeners to treat the next clause as an interpretation of what came before. In interactive speech, Ibig mong sabihin, ...? brings the other person's intended meaning into the question. The presence or absence of a personal possessor therefore matters.

In ibig sabihin, ibig contributes the notion of intended meaning, while sabihin is the patient-voice infinitive-like form associated with “say.” The expression is partly conventionalized, so learners should master its recurring frames rather than build it word by word from English.

Ano ang ibig sabihin ng simbolong ito sa mapa?

What does this symbol on the map mean?

Ang ibig sabihin ng pulang ilaw ay may tumatakbong makina sa loob.

The red light means that a machine is running inside.

The ng phrase identifies what is being interpreted: ng simbolong ito, ng pulang ilaw. The ay construction is natural here because a term or sign is established as a topic and its interpretation follows. This marked order does not overturn the general predicate-first tendency of Filipino clauses.

Bare ibig sabihin as a discourse marker

At the beginning of a clause, bare ibig sabihin often means “that means” or “in other words.” It points back to evidence and makes its relevance explicit.

Nakakandado na ang pinto at patay na ang ilaw sa opisina. Ibig sabihin, umalis na ang lahat.

The office door is locked and the lights are off. That means everyone has left.

Hanggang alas-dose lang bumibiyahe ang bangka. Ibig sabihin, hindi na tayo makakatawid ngayong hapon.

The boat runs only until noon. That means we can no longer cross this afternoon.

These are inferences rather than dictionary definitions. The evidence licenses a conclusion, and ibig sabihin displays the speaker's reasoning. Unlike kaya, it does not primarily narrate one event causing another. Compare “the schedule implies X” with “the high waves caused the trip to be canceled.”

Malakas ang alon, kaya kinansela ng kapitan ang biyahe.

The waves were strong, so the captain canceled the trip.

The consequence connector kaya links cause and outcome. Ibig sabihin would instead present the cancellation as evidence for an interpretation or spell out what a fact means for the participants.

💡
Ibig sabihin manages inference: it says “here is how to understand what was just said.” It does not guarantee that the interpretation is correct, so a listener can accept the facts but challenge the inference.

Personal meaning: ko, mo, and other ng-forms

When the intended meaning belongs to a specific speaker, Filipino uses a ng-form pronoun within the phrase: ibig kong sabihin, ibig mong sabihin, ibig niyang sabihin, and so on. The linker surfaces as -ng after ko, mo, and niya.

Ang ibig kong sabihin ay kailangan nating baguhin ang oras, hindi kanselahin ang pulong.

What I mean is that we need to change the time, not cancel the meeting.

Ibig mong sabihin, sa kabilang gusali na ang rehistrasyon?

Do you mean registration is now in the other building?

Hindi ko agad naunawaan ang ibig niyang sabihin tungkol sa bagong tuntunin.

I did not immediately understand what they meant about the new rule.

These pronouns are not freely interchangeable with ako, ikaw, or siya. They form a possessor-like relation with ibig sabihin: roughly, “my/your/their intended meaning.” For more on the relevant forms, see question patterns with ano.

The expression gusto kong sabihin is different. It means “I want to say,” while ibig kong sabihin ordinarily means “what I mean.” Although standalone ibig can express desire in elevated or fixed uses, this construction is conventionalized around intended meaning.

Gusto kong sabihin sa kanila ang magandang balita mamaya.

I want to tell them the good news later.

Ang ibig kong sabihin, huwag muna nating ipangako ang petsa.

What I mean is, let's not promise the date yet.

Clarification, reformulation, and register

Bare ibig sabihin is frequent in everyday conversation and also acceptable in explanatory prose. Sa madaling salita is more explicitly a simplification. Nangangahulugan ito na ... (formal/academic) states that something entails or signifies a proposition.

Hindi maaaring ilipat sa ibang pangalan ang pahintulot. Sa madaling salita, ang nakapangalan lamang dito ang maaaring gumamit nito.

The permit cannot be transferred to another name. In simple terms, only the person named on it may use it. (neutral/formal)

Hindi maaaring ilipat ang pahintulot? Ibig sabihin, kailangan kong kumuha ng bago?

The permit cannot be transferred? You mean I have to obtain a new one? (conversational)

Ang patuloy na pagbaba ng antas ng tubig ay nangangahulugan na kailangang higpitan ang pagtitipid.

The continuing drop in the water level means that conservation measures must be tightened. (formal/academic)

The choice changes interactional stance. Sa madaling salita offers an accessible restatement; ibig sabihin can invite confirmation or make an inference; nangangahulugan ito na presents the relation in detached formal prose.

Short exchange and scope

Lina: Hindi raw sakop ng libreng serbisyo ang piyesang kailangang palitan. Omar: Ibig mong sabihin, tayo ang magbabayad para sa piyesa? Lina: Oo, pero libre pa rin ang pagkakabit.

Lina: They say the part that needs replacing is not covered by the free service. Omar: Do you mean we will pay for the part? Lina: Yes, but the installation is still free.

Omar does not merely repeat Lina's words; he tests a practical implication. The question intonation and mo make the utterance a confirmation request rather than an authoritative conclusion.

Initial ibig sabihin normally has scope over the following clause and is set off by a comma in edited prose. It can introduce a negative or interrogative clause. Aspect, voice, animacy, and marker choice remain properties of that clause.

Ibig sabihin, wala pa tayong pinal na kasunduan?

Does that mean we still do not have a final agreement?

Ibig sabihin, hindi pinili ng lupon ang alinman sa dalawang mungkahi.

That means the committee chose neither of the two proposals.

💡
Do not translate every English conversational I mean as bare ibig sabihin. When correcting your own wording, use ang ibig kong sabihin or ibig kong sabihin; when interpreting prior evidence, bare ibig sabihin is natural.

Common Mistakes

Omitting the phrase markers in a meaning question

❌ Ano ibig sabihin ng guhit na ito?

Nonstandardly compressed for careful Filipino—the question lacks ang before the phrase being identified.

✅ Ano ang ibig sabihin ng guhit na ito?

What does this line mean?

The shorter version occurs in rapid (informal) speech, but learners should use the complete standard frame in neutral speech and writing.

Confusing intended meaning with desire to speak

❌ Ibig kong sabihin sa direktor ang reklamo bukas.

Incorrect for 'I want to tell the director the complaint tomorrow'—this form is normally understood as 'what I mean.'

✅ Gusto kong sabihin sa direktor ang reklamo bukas.

I want to tell the director about the complaint tomorrow.

Using an ang-form pronoun inside the fixed phrase

❌ Ibig ikaw sabihin, libre ang paghahatid?

Incorrect—the intended speaker is expressed with the linked ng-form mo.

✅ Ibig mong sabihin, libre ang paghahatid?

Do you mean delivery is free?

Treating clarification as simple addition

❌ Nawawala ang lagda sa ikalawang pahina. Ibig sabihin, mali rin ang numero ng telepono.

Incorrect if the phone-number error is merely another independent problem; it is not an interpretation of the missing signature.

✅ Nawawala ang lagda sa ikalawang pahina. Bukod dito, mali rin ang numero ng telepono.

The signature on the second page is missing. In addition, the phone number is also wrong.

Making an unwarranted inference sound established

❌ Hindi sumagot si Mara sa mensahe. Ibig sabihin, ayaw na niyang sumama.

Overstated—the lack of a reply does not by itself establish that Mara no longer wants to come.

✅ Hindi sumagot si Mara sa mensahe. Baka abala pa siya, kaya hintayin muna natin ang sagot niya.

Mara did not reply to the message. She may still be busy, so let's wait for her response.

The original grammar is possible, but its coherence claim is too strong for the evidence. This is why connector choice is also stance and inference management, not just vocabulary.

Key Takeaways

  • Use Ano ang ibig sabihin ng X? to ask what X means.
  • Bare Ibig sabihin, ... interprets prior discourse or states an inference.
  • Ibig mong sabihin, ...? checks another person's intended meaning; ang ibig kong sabihin repairs your own.
  • Sa madaling salita foregrounds simplification, while nangangahulugan ito na is more formal and detached.
  • Pronoun form and coherence relation both matter: an English gloss alone cannot determine the Filipino construction.
