C2 Learner Path

C2 work is not a search for longer sentences or rarer words. It is the ability to interpret genuinely difficult structures, compare defensible analyses, edit across demanding registers, and make claims about variation with appropriate evidence. This final route links existing pages into a research-and-production cycle; it does not replace their detailed arguments.

Prerequisite review: defend a C1 editorial decision

Return to the portfolio from the C1 Learner Path. Select five revisions involving reference, voice, subordination, particle scope, or register. For each, write the rejected alternative, state whether it was ungrammatical, ambiguous, misleading, or merely less suitable, and cite the relevant guide page.

Ipinakikita ng pagsusuring inilathala ng pangkat na hindi sapat ang iisang paliwanag sa lahat ng datos.

The study published by the team shows that a single explanation is insufficient for all the data. (academic)

Ayon sa mga awtor, maaaring ipaliwanag ng dalawang salik ang pagbabago, ngunit kailangan pa ng karagdagang ebidensiya.

According to the authors, two factors may explain the change, but further evidence is still needed. (academic)

Proceed if you can distinguish the source of each claim, the strength of maaaring, and the scope of pa. If your justification says only that one version “sounds better,” return to the C1 evidence and register blocks.

💡
A C2 judgment should state its evidence and its limits. Separate claims about grammaticality, standard usage, frequency, genre preference, region, and personal style.

Core Block 1: long-distance relations and structural limits

Study Long-Distance Dependencies, Extraction and Island Constraints, and Complex Sentences in Academic Filipino. Revisit Ang-Marked Head Relative Clauses, Oblique and Non-Pivot Relativization, and voice restrictions before evaluating a difficult dependency.

Ang mananaliksik na sinabi ng patnugot na inimbitahan ng unibersidad ay dumating kahapon.

The researcher whom the editor said the university had invited arrived yesterday.

Aling panukala ang inaasahan ng lupon na susuriin ng bagong komite bago matapos ang buwan?

Which proposal does the board expect the new committee to review before the end of the month?

Draw the clause boundaries, identify the selected pivot in each embedded clause, and mark the interpretive gap before translating. Then create a minimally different version whose dependency crosses a structure discussed as restricted on the island page. Do not declare it acceptable or impossible from English intuition alone; compare the guide's analysis, careful-speaker judgments, and corpus evidence.

Core Block 2: perspective, reported discourse, and logophoric effects

Study Logophoric Effects in Reported Discourse, then revisit Indirect Speech and Perspective, Anaphora across Clauses, and evidential daw/raw. Keep a separate column for grammatical reference, favored perspective, and factual source.

Sinabi ni Lira kay Ben na ayon sa kaniya, handa na siyang umalis.

Lira told Ben that, according to her or him, she or he was ready to leave. (deliberately ambiguous without context)

Sinabi ni Lira kay Ben, “Handa na akong umalis.”

Lira told Ben, ‘I am ready to leave.’ (explicitly anchored perspective)

The task is to list the readings licensed or favored by context, not to assume that Filipino third-person pronouns encode English gender. Rewrite ambiguous reports as direct quotation, repeated names, or separated sentences when a demanding genre requires one interpretation.

Checkpoint: analyze a six-sentence reported account with two speakers and three propositions. Mark who originally asserted each proposition, who currently endorses it, and where a pronoun merely refers rather than adopting a viewpoint.

Core Block 3: competing voice analyses

Read Limits of the Symmetrical-Voice Analysis, Voice Choice in Formal Writing, and Voice Variation in Conversation. Revisit the participant-marking and connected-discourse pages for every core voice.

Nagpadala ng limang kahon ng sangguniang aklat ang samahan sa paaralang nasunugan.

The association sent five boxes of reference books to the school damaged by fire. (actor voice)

Ipinadala ng samahan sa paaralang nasunugan ang limang kahon ng sangguniang aklat.

The association sent the five boxes of reference books to the school damaged by fire. (conveyance voice)

Analyze each sentence under the terminology used throughout this guide, then summarize an alternative scholarly analysis fairly. State what each account explains well—participant marking, referentiality, information structure, or syntactic behavior—and what it leaves unresolved. A theoretical label does not replace the task of predicting natural usage.

💡
When two analyses use the same term differently, define the term before comparing conclusions. Apparent disagreement sometimes comes from incompatible definitions rather than incompatible data.

Core Block 4: editing across demanding registers

Study Academic Filipino, Administrative and Legal Filipino, Conversational versus Formal Filipino, and Literary Filipino. Use Annotated Original Academic Abstract, Annotated Original Legal-Administrative Notice, Annotated Original Formal Speech, and Annotated Original Literary Pastiche as controlled models.

Ipinahihiwatig ng mga resulta na may ugnayan ang dalas ng paggamit at ang antas ng pagtanggap, bagaman hindi nito pinatutunayan ang tuwirang sanhi.

The results suggest a relationship between frequency of use and degree of acceptance, although this does not prove direct causation. (academic)

Alinsunod sa kautusang ito, kinakailangang isumite ng bawat tanggapan ang binagong talaan sa takdang petsa o mas maaga.

In accordance with this order, each office must submit the revised list on or before the specified date. (administrative/legal)

Sa pagdilim ng langit, tila lumiit ang pagitan ng dagat at ng mga ulap.

As the sky darkened, the distance between the sea and the clouds seemed to shrink. (literary)

Transform one proposition through all four registers. Keep a fact-and-commitment ledger: who asserts what, with what certainty, obligation, and audience relation. A successful edit changes syntax and vocabulary without inventing evidence or strengthening a recommendation into a legal requirement.

Core Block 5: variation, corpora, and responsible generalization

Study Variation without Prescriptive Stigma, Regional Accents in National Filipino, Regional Uses of Pronouns and Particles, Urban Youth Filipino, Marinduque Tagalog, and Vocabulary from Cebuano and Other Philippine Languages.

Build a small evidence set from attributed examples. Record date, region, speaker or publication, genre, surrounding context, and whether the form is quoted, transcribed, or normalized. Compare it with contemporary standard Filipino without treating either as context-free.

Sa datos na ito, mas karaniwan ang unang anyo sa impormal na usapan, samantalang nangingibabaw ang ikalawa sa pormal na pagsulat.

In this dataset, the first form is more common in informal conversation, while the second predominates in formal writing.

That sentence is an acceptable conclusion only when the dataset supports it. Replace “Filipino speakers say” with a claim narrow enough to match the evidence.

Spaced retrieval and critical production

CycleTaskRequired evidence
Two daysReconstruct a long dependency and its clause boundaries.Voice and pivot diagnostics
One weekResolve a multi-speaker report in two ways.Reference and perspective ledger
Two weeksEdit one proposition into four registers.Fact-and-commitment ledger
One monthEvaluate one variation claim.Attributed corpus sample and bounded conclusion

After each cycle, produce a counteranalysis: the strongest plausible interpretation that differs from your first. State what evidence would distinguish them. This practice prevents confidence from outrunning the data.

Common Mistakes

Leaving an English-style resumptive pronoun in a formal relative

❌ Ang mananaliksik na sinabi ng patnugot na inimbitahan siya ng unibersidad ay dumating kahapon.

Incorrect in the intended formal extraction—the resumptive siya duplicates the extracted pivot.

✅ Dumating kahapon ang mananaliksik na sinabi ng patnugot na inimbitahan ng unibersidad.

The researcher whom the editor said the university invited arrived yesterday.

Using a pivot pronoun after ayon sa

❌ Sinabi ni Lira kay Ben na ayon sa siya, handa na silang umalis.

Incorrect—ayon sa requires the sa-form pronoun kaniya, not pivot-form siya.

✅ Hindi tiyak ang tinutukoy ng mga panghalip, kaya tahasang pinangalanan sa rebisyon ang nagsasalita.

The pronoun referents are uncertain, so the revision explicitly names the speaker.

Stacking nominalizations while losing participant marking

❌ Isinagawa ng tanggapan ang pagpapasimula ng pagpapatupad sa pagpapahusay ang sistema.

Incorrect—the stacked nominalizations leave ang sistema without the marker relation required by the intended structure.

✅ Sinimulan ng tanggapan ang pagpapatupad ng mga pagbabago sa sistema.

The office began implementing the changes to the system.

Using the wrong relator after alinsunod

❌ Alinsunod ng kautusan, kailangang isumite ang mga dokumento bago magtanghali bukas.

Incorrect—alinsunod requires a sa phrase, not ng, for the governing order.

✅ Alinsunod sa kautusan, kailangang isumite ang mga dokumento bago magtanghali bukas.

In accordance with the order, the documents must be submitted before noon tomorrow. (formal)

Generalizing a regional form beyond the evidence

❌ Ginagamit ng lahat Pilipino ang anyong ito dahil lumitaw ito sa tatlong panayam.

Incorrect—the quantifier lahat requires ng before the following noun phrase, and the tiny sample cannot support the generalization.

✅ Lumitaw ang anyong ito sa tatlong panayam mula sa iisang pamayanan; kailangan ng mas malawak na datos bago magbigay ng pambansang paglalahat.

This form appeared in three interviews from one community; broader data are needed before making a national generalization.

End-of-level integration project

Produce a capstone with four linked artifacts: a 300-word academic discussion, a one-page administrative notice based on the same facts, a conversational oral explanation, and a literary passage that reframes but does not contradict the evidence. Include one annotated long-distance dependency, one deliberately resolved perspective chain, and a note comparing two voice analyses.

Add a mini variation study using at least five attributed tokens. State a narrow finding, an alternative interpretation, and the additional evidence needed. Finally, edit all four artifacts for marker, aspect, voice, linker, particle, cohesion, and register choices, documenting every substantive change.

C2 exit outcomes

By the end of this path, you should analyze rare structures and variation critically, track perspective through demanding reported discourse, edit across academic, legal-administrative, conversational, and literary registers, and justify competing grammatical analyses. Completion is submitting the capstone. C2 command is the capacity to revise your conclusion when stronger structural, usage, or regional evidence appears.
