Formal Progressive در حال

Formal and administrative Persian often presents an event as an ongoing process with در حال + long infinitive + copula: سامانه در حال به‌روزرسانی است “The system is being updated” or کارشناسان در حال بررسی پرونده هستند “The specialists are reviewing the file.” Literally, در حالِ ... means “in the state/process of ...”; an ezafe links حال to an infinitive or action noun, and the copula places that process in time and agrees with its subject.

This construction overlaps with the conversational داشتن progressive but has a different profile. دارم گزارش را می‌نویسم is the natural vivid answer to “What are you doing?”; در حال نوشتن گزارش هستم is careful and process-focused, suitable in an interview, status update, institutional notice, or formal report. It is not merely a more complicated way to translate every English be + -ing.

Form: a process phrase plus a copula

The core pattern contains four layers:

LayerFormFunction
prepositionدرlocates the subject “in” a process
process noun + ezafeحالِlinks the process frame to its content
verbal contentنوشتن، ساخته‌شدن، بررسی کردنlong infinitive or infinitival compound
copulaهستم، است، بود، بودندcarries person, number, tense, and negation

در حال نوشتن پاسخ رسمی شرکت هستم.

dar hâl-e neveshtan-e pâsokh-e rasmi-ye sherkat hastam.

I am writing the company's official response. (formal/careful; first-singular copula)

گروه فنی در حال آزمایش نسخه‌ی تازه‌ی برنامه است.

goruh-e fanni dar hâl-e âzmâyesh-e noskhe-ye tâze-ye barnâme ast.

The technical team is testing the new version of the program. (formal report style)

نیروهای امدادی در حال جست‌وجوی مسیر امن هستند.

niru-hâ-ye emdâdi dar hâl-e jost-o-ju-ye masir-e amn hastand.

The emergency crews are searching for a safe route. (formal/news register; plural copula)

The Persian script normally leaves the ezafe after consonant-final حال unwritten, but the phrase is pronounced dar hâl-e, not dar hâl. The long infinitive is invariant: نوشتن does not change for person. Agreement appears once, on هستم / هستید / است / هستند. This contrasts directly with داشتن progressives, in which both finite verbs agree.

💡
In the formal progressive, look for one finite element at the end: the copula. Everything after در حالِ and before that copula names the process but does not conjugate.

Long infinitives and formal action nouns

With a simple verb, the full infinitive is transparent: در حال نوشتن است، در حال باریدن بود، در حال ساخته‌شدن است. With compound verbs, the full infinitival predicate can remain: در حال آماده کردن گزارش هستیم. Institutional prose, however, strongly favors compact action nouns such as بررسی، ارزیابی، تعمیر، مذاکره and omits a predictable light verb: پرونده در حال بررسی است rather than heavier پرونده در حال بررسی شدن است.

پل قدیمی در حال تعمیر شدن است و عبور از آن ممنوع است.

pol-e qadimi dar hâl-e ta'mir shodan ast va obur az ân mamnu' ast.

The old bridge is being repaired, and crossing it is prohibited. (formal notice; explicit passive infinitive)

درخواست شما در حال بررسی است و نتیجه از طریق پیامک اعلام می‌شود.

darkhâst-e shomâ dar hâl-e barrasi ast va natije az tariq-e peyâmak e'lâm mi-shavad.

Your request is under review, and the result will be communicated by text message. (formal/administrative; action noun with implicit processing)

The compact action-noun version is not formally identical to a full long infinitive, but it belongs to the same در حالِ X بودن constructional family. It is often more idiomatic in bureaucratic prose. With an animate agent and a concrete activity, retaining the compound infinitive can sound clearer: در حال مرتب کردن پرونده‌ها هستیم “we are organizing the files.”

تا پایان هفته در حال آماده کردن گزارش نهایی خواهیم بود.

tâ pâyân-e hafte dar hâl-e âmâde kardan-e gozâresh-e nehâyi khâhim bud.

We will be preparing the final report until the end of the week. (formal; future copular frame)

Present, past, and layered clauses

Because در حالِ ... is a predicate phrase, changing the copula changes the viewpoint. است / هستند places the process at the present reference time; بود / بودند places it at a past reference time. Under a modal or uncertain frame, subjunctive باشد / باشند is possible.

هنگام قطع برق، دستگاه در حال ثبت اطلاعات بود.

hengâm-e qat'-e barq, dastgâh dar hâl-e sabt-e ettelâ'ât bud.

When the power went out, the device was recording data. (formal technical report; past progressive viewpoint)

احتمال دارد گروه دوم هنوز در حال نمونه‌برداری باشد.

ehtemâl dârad goruh-e dovvom hanuz dar hâl-e nemune-bardâri bâshad.

The second group may still be collecting samples. (formal/academic; progressive phrase under an epistemic modal)

The modal example shows why the construction is useful beyond style: unlike the ordinary داشتن progressive, it can sit naturally under modal environments with subjunctive باشد. The copula participates in the larger clause's mood system while the process expression remains unchanged.

Negation

Negation attaches to the copula: در حال نوشتن نیستم, در حال بررسی نبود, در حال حرکت نخواهند بود. This directly denies that the subject is in the named process. It is structurally available in a way that neutral negation of the داشتن progressive is not.

سامانه در حال دریافت اطلاعات نیست؛ ارتباط با سرور قطع شده است.

sâmâne dar hâl-e daryâft-e ettelâ'ât nist; ertebât bâ server qat' shode ast.

The system is not receiving data; its connection to the server has been cut. (formal technical register)

Do not use در حال نرفتن است as the routine equivalent of “she isn't going.” That phrase turns deliberate non-going into the process itself and is marked. For an ordinary negative event, either negate the copular process—در حال حرکت نیست—or use a finite negative verb—حرکت نمی‌کند. Similarly, در حال انجام ندادن کار است is possible only when sustained refusal or omission is precisely what the writer wants to foreground.

💡
Negative نیست has scope over membership in the process: “is not in the process of X.” Negative infinitival نکردن makes nonperformance itself the named process and therefore has a narrower, marked use.

Contrast with the داشتن progressive

ConstructionExampleBest fit
داشتن + می‌ presentدارم گزارش را می‌نویسمvivid immediate conversation
در حالِ + infinitive + copulaدر حال نوشتن گزارش هستمcareful status statement, formal report
plain imperfectiveگزارش را می‌نویسمhabit, current activity, or scheduled future from context

— الان چه کار می‌کنی؟ — دارم وسایلم را جمع می‌کنم.

— alân che kâr mi-koni? — dâram vasâyel-am râ jam' mi-konam.

‘What are you doing now?’ ‘I'm packing my things.’ (neutral conversation; داشتن progressive is natural)

هیئت کارشناسی در حال جمع‌آوری اسناد تکمیلی است.

hey'at-e kârshenâsi dar hâl-e jam'-âvari-ye asnâd-e takmili ast.

The expert panel is collecting supplementary documents. (formal institutional report)

In friendly conversation, the second sentence would sound official unless that tone is intended. In an agency update, the first construction can sound unnecessarily conversational. The Present Progressive with داشتن page explains its double agreement and its restriction on neutral negation.

Copula omission and headlines

Headlines, dashboard labels, and compressed notices sometimes omit the final copula: سامانه در حال به‌روزرسانی “system updating.” This is (formal/headline style) ellipsis, not the full running-prose paradigm. A complete sentence in edited prose normally retains است or another appropriate copula. Spoken Persian may use a short copula attached to the infinitive—در حال رفتنم “I'm in the process of leaving”—but that careful conversational form should not be confused with omission.

Common Mistakes

1. Conjugating the infinitive instead of the copula

❌ من در حال می‌نویسم گزارش هستم.

Incorrect — می‌نویسم is finite; the construction requires an invariant infinitive or action noun before the copula.

✅ من در حال نوشتن صورت‌جلسه هستم.

man dar hâl-e neveshtan-e surat-jalase hastam.

I am writing the minutes. (careful/formal)

2. Combining both progressive frames

❌ دارم در حال خواندن گزارش هستم.

Incorrect in ordinary Persian — progressive داشتن and در حال are competing frames, not cumulative markers.

✅ در حال خواندن گزارش ارزیابی هستم.

dar hâl-e khândan-e gozâresh-e arzyâbi hastam.

I am reading the evaluation report. (formal/careful)

3. Dropping the copula in ordinary prose

⚠️ پژوهشگران در حال مقایسه‌ی نتایج.

pazhuheshgarân dar hâl-e moqâyese-ye natâyej.

Acceptable as a headline or dashboard label, but incomplete as ordinary running prose.

✅ پژوهشگران در حال مقایسه‌ی نتایج دو آزمایش هستند.

pazhuheshgarân dar hâl-e moqâyese-ye natâyej-e do âzmâyesh hastand.

The researchers are comparing the results of the two experiments. (academic)

4. Negating the infinitive for a neutral negative

⚠️ قطار در حال نرسیدن است.

qatâr dar hâl-e na-residan ast.

Possible only if non-arrival itself is being framed as a sustained process; it is not the ordinary negative progressive.

✅ قطار هنوز در حال حرکت نیست و زمان حرکت اعلام نشده است.

qatâr hanuz dar hâl-e harekat nist va zamân-e harekat e'lâm na-shode ast.

The train is not yet moving, and the departure time has not been announced. (formal announcement)

Key Takeaways

  • The full construction is در حالِ + long infinitive/action expression + copula; the infinitive stays invariant and the copula carries agreement and tense.
  • Formal prose frequently uses compact action nouns such as در حال بررسی است, especially when the affected object is the grammatical subject.
  • Negate the copula to deny an ongoing process; making نکردن itself the process has a marked deliberate-nonperformance meaning.
  • Use داشتن for vivid everyday progressives and در حال for formal, institutional, technical, or carefully process-focused presentation.
  • Headline copula omission is a register-specific compression, not the default full sentence.
