Persian can combine imperfective می, a past participle, and subjunctive باشـ: میرفته باشد، کار میکرده باشند. This continuous subjunctive places a past situation viewed as ongoing, repeated, or habitual inside possibility, doubt, qualification, or another nonasserted domain: ممکن است آن ساعت هنوز کار میکرده باشد “He or she may still have been working at that hour.”
The English name is potentially misleading. This is not the ordinary way to say “that I be working now”; for that, Persian normally uses a simple present subjunctive or The layered form specifically combines a past imperfective viewpoint with the modal status carried by باشـ, and it is most at home in analytical, investigative, historical, and careful written prose.
Formation: imperfective participle plus
Start with the past stem, add participial ـه, prefix می, and then add the agreeing present subjunctive of بودن:
می + past stem + ـه + باش + personal ending
| Person | رفتن | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| I | میرفته باشم | mi-rafte bâsham |
| you (singular) | میرفته باشی | mi-rafte bâshi |
| he/she/it | میرفته باشد | mi-rafte bâshad |
| we | میرفته باشیم | mi-rafte bâshim |
| you (plural/polite) | میرفته باشید | mi-rafte bâshid |
| they | میرفته باشند | mi-rafte bâshand |
momken ast ân sâ'at hanuz be khâne bar-mi-gashte bâshad.
He or she may still have been returning home at that hour. (formal-neutral; ongoing past possibility)
ba'id ast ân ruz-hâ tanhâ zendegi mi-karde bâshand.
It is unlikely that they were living alone in those days. (formal-neutral; durative past under evaluation)
The lexical participle stays unchanged, and می belongs to that participle, not to باشـ. With a compound verb, its nonverbal element remains separate: کار میکرده باشد، درس میخوانده باشند.
The underlying imperfective contrast is reviewed on Past Continuous with می; this page adds participial ـه and subjunctive باشـ to that viewpoint.
Ongoing at a past reference point
One central use is to reconstruct an activity that was in progress at a particular past time. The reference point must come from context—an hour, another event, or a stage of an investigation.
fekr nemi-konam hengâm-e tamâs-e man rânandegi mi-karde bâshi.
I don't think you were driving when I called. (careful standard; rejected ongoing hypothesis)
ehtemâl dârad kârgar-hâ hengâm-e qat'-e barq dastgâh râ ta'mir mi-karde bâshand.
The workers may have been repairing the machine when the power went out. (formal investigative register)
That indicative presents the activity as part of the narrator's past account. تعمیر میکرده باشند holds the same ongoing scene at a distance: it is reconstructed, possible, or not fully asserted.
This form does not itself identify the source of evidence. احتمال دارد, فکر نمیکنم, a witness report, or the surrounding genre supplies the modal force.
Habitual and repeated past situations
Imperfective aspect also covers habits. In biographical or historical reasoning, the form can mean “may have regularly done” rather than “may have been doing at one instant.” Frequency expressions make the habitual reading clear.
shâyad dar javâni har hafte be in ketâbkhâne mi-âmade bâshad.
Perhaps he or she used to come to this library every week when young. (formal-neutral biographical inference)
har pazhuheshgari ke dar ân dowre injâ kâr mi-karde bâshad, nâm-e poruzhe râ mi-shenâsad.
Any researcher who may have been working here during that period knows the project's name. (academic; nonidentified member of a class)
In the relative clause, هر پژوهشگری does not identify one asserted person. The subjunctive fits that open set, while میکرده preserves the period's habitual/durative viewpoint.
Continuous versus completed anteriority
The ordinary perfect subjunctive رفته باشد views the event as completed before the relevant point. Adding imperfective می yields میرفته باشد, which looks inside a past course or habit.
momken ast leylâ pish az shoru'-e jalase rafte bâshad.
Leila may have left before the meeting began. (completed anterior event)
momken ast leylâ hengâm-e shoru'-e jalase be daftar mi-rafte bâshad.
Leila may have been on her way to the office when the meeting began. (ongoing past possibility)
The distinction is aspectual, not simply “earlier” versus “more recent.” Both may concern the same morning. The first takes an external view of a completed departure; the second gives an internal view of motion in progress.
Negation and scope
Ordinary event negation replaces می with نمی on the participle: نمیرفته باشد، کار نمیکرده باشند. The subjunctive auxiliary remains affirmative.
momken ast ân zamân hanuz az in narm-afzâr estefâde nemi-karde bâshand.
They may not yet have been using this software at that time. (formal-neutral)
میرفته نباشد is possible only with a marked contrast that negates the state or characterization “having been going,” not as the neutral negative. Learners should default to نمیرفته باشد.
Register and simpler alternatives
The form is grammatical but not frequent in everyday Iranian conversation. Speakers often replace it with a simpler clause plus an explicit source or uncertainty marker:
- formal layered: ممکن است ساعت هشت کار میکرده باشد;
- neutral reconstruction: شاید ساعت هشت داشت کار میکرد;
- state-based alternative: شاید ساعت هشت سر کار بوده باشد;
The last pattern belongs to informal speech and itself stacks forms; it is not automatically simpler for a learner. In formal analysis, the continuous subjunctive is valuable because it encodes imperfective viewpoint and nonassertion in one verb phrase.
momken ast hengâm-e vorud-e modir, negahbân hanuz posht-e miz nesheste bude bâshad.
The guard may still have been seated at the desk when the manager entered. (formal; state-based alternative, not continuous-subjunctive morphology)
That alternative uses the stative perfect of نشستن plus an additional past layer. It shows why meaning does not map to one compulsory form. Choose the least complex form that preserves the intended viewpoint.
Common Mistakes
1. Building the participle from the present stem
Incorrect — the participle uses past stem رفت, producing میرفته, not present stem رو.
momken ast ân sâl har ruz bâ qatâr mi-rafte bâshad.
He or she may have commuted by train every day that year.
2. Putting می on باشـ
Incorrect for the continuous subjunctive — imperfective می belongs on the lexical participle, and the auxiliary must be باشد.
shâyad ân mowqe' dar kârgâh kâr mi-karde bâshad.
Perhaps he or she was working in the workshop then.
3. Using the layered past form for a present instruction
Incorrect for a desired activity now — میکرده باشی locates the work in a past imperfective scene.
mi-khâham alân dar hâl-e kâr ru-ye gozâresh bâshi.
I want you to be working on the report now. (formal-neutral)
4. Matching باشـ to the matrix subject
Incorrect — آنها controls plural باشند, not first-singular باشم.
man shak dâram ân-hâ dar ân dowre injâ zendegi mi-karde bâshand.
I doubt that they were living here during that period.
Key Takeaways
- Form the continuous subjunctive with
- It places an ongoing, repeated, or habitual past scene inside possibility, doubt, or another nonasserted environment.
- Contrast completed رفته باشد with internally viewed میرفته باشد.
- Put neutral negation on the participle: نمیرفته باشد.
- The form is productive but stylistically marked; everyday speech usually chooses a simpler reconstruction.
