یاد آوردن means “to remember, recall, bring to mind.” Modern Persian very often uses the expanded variant به یاد آوردن, especially in careful speech and edited prose: آن روز را به یاد میآورم “I remember that day.” The compound inherits past stem آوردـ and present stem آورـ from آوردن, including command and subjunctive بیاورـ.
Persian also has the experiencer construction یادم آمد “I remembered / it came back to me.” The two expressions divide perspective: به یاد آوردن presents someone actively retrieving a memory, while یادم آمد presents the memory as arriving in the experiencer's mind. Everyday speech strongly favors the second when recollection is sudden.
Principal parts and the به variant
| Form | Core form | Common expanded form | Romanization |
|---|---|---|---|
| infinitive | یاد آوردن | به یاد آوردن | yâd âvardan / be yâd âvardan |
| past base | یاد آورد | به یاد آورد | yâd âvard / be yâd âvard |
| present base | یاد آور | به یاد آور | yâd âvar / be yâd âvar |
| past participle | یاد آورده | به یاد آورده | yâd âvarde / be yâd âvarde |
| imperative | یاد بیاور | به یاد بیاور | yâd biyâvar / be yâd biyâvar |
| negative imperative | یاد نیاور | به یاد نیاور | yâd nayâvar / be yâd nayâvar |
The three written elements of به یاد آوردن remain separate. Do not confuse verbal یاد بیاور “remember!” with joined adjective/noun یادآور “reminiscent; reminder,” as in تصویری یادآور گذشته “an image reminiscent of the past.” The general verb paradigm appears on آوردن âvardan: to Bring.
لحظهای فکر کن و نام خیابان را به یاد بیاور.
lahze-i fekr kon va nâm-e khiyâbân râ be yâd biyâvar.
Think for a moment and remember the street's name. (neutral singular command)
نمیخواهم آن گفتوگوی تلخ را به یاد بیاوری.
nemi-khâham ân goft-o-gu-ye talkh râ be yâd biyâvari.
I don't want you to remember that bitter conversation. (neutral; subjunctive)
High-value paradigm
The table uses common به یاد آوردن. Removing به leaves the same inflection on آوردن, but the shorter construction is more elevated or compressed in much current prose.
| Person | Present | Simple past | Present perfect | Present subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | به یاد میآورم | به یاد آوردم | به یاد آوردهام | به یاد بیاورم |
| you (sg.)
Present میآورد is written like past-imperfective میآورد, but pronunciation distinguishes mi-âvarad “brings/recalls” from mi-âvard “was bringing/recalling.” Context also normally disambiguates.
چهرهاش را به یاد میآورم، اما اسمش را نه.
chehre-ash râ be yâd mi-âvaram, ammâ esm-ash râ na.
I remember her face, but not her name. (neutral standard)
هیچکدام به یاد نیاوردند که پنجره را باز گذاشته بودند.
hich-kodâm be yâd nayâvardand ke panjare râ bâz gozâshte budand.
None of them remembered that they had left the window open. (neutral narrative)
Recalling a person, thing, or event
The remembered item is the semantic object and normally takes را when specific: شماره را به یاد آوردم، آن شب را یاد میآورم. A generic or nonspecific object is possible without را, but memories are often discourse-identifiable, so را is frequent.
وقتی این آهنگ را میشنوم، سفر شمال را به یاد میآورم.
vaqti in âhang râ mi-shenavam, safar-e shomâl râ be yâd mi-âvaram.
When I hear this song, I remember our trip to the north. (neutral standard)
پس از چند دقیقه شمارهی پرونده را یاد آورد.
pas az chand daqiqe shomâre-ye parvande râ yâd âvard.
After a few minutes, she recalled the file number. (formal/elevated shorter variant)
به یاد داشتن means “have in memory, remember” as a state and is comparatively formal: به یاد دارم که.... به یاد آوردن profiles retrieval or an act of recollection, though its present can also describe stable memory. These are related but not identical choices.
Remembering a proposition: که clauses
A complete remembered proposition can follow که. Because the clause reports remembered information, its verb normally keeps the tense appropriate to that information; Persian does not automatically backshift just because به یاد آوردم is past.
ناگهان به یاد آوردم که امروز کتابخانه زود بسته میشود.
nâgahân be yâd âvardam ke emruz ketâbkhâne zud baste mi-shavad.
I suddenly remembered that the library closes early today. (neutral standard; current fact)
به یاد میآوری که اولین بار کجا همدیگر را دیدیم؟
be yâd mi-âvari ke avvalin bâr kojâ hamdigar râ didim?
Do you remember where we first met? (neutral standard)
English remember to call refers to carrying out a future duty, not retrieving a fact. Persian often expresses that more naturally with یادت باشد تماس بگیری “remember to call,” or reports failure with یادم رفت تماس بگیرم. Do not assume that every English remember + infinitive selects به یاد آوردن.
Experiencer یادم آمد
In یادم آمد, enclitic ـم marks the experiencer, not the grammatical subject ending. The verb آمد is third-person singular: the remembered content is construed as coming into memory. Other experiencers are یادت آمد، یادش آمد، یادمان آمد، یادتان آمد، یادشان آمد.
وسط راه یادم آمد که چراغ اتاق را خاموش نکردهام.
vasat-e râh yâd-am âmad ke cherâgh-e otâq râ khâmush nakarde-am.
Halfway there, I remembered that I hadn't turned off the room light. (neutral spoken standard; sudden recollection)
اسم رستوران یادت میآید؟
esm-e restorân yâd-at mi-âyad?
Do you remember the restaurant's name? (neutral spoken standard)
The remembered noun can precede the experiencer phrase, as اسم رستوران does here. When it is plural, careful agreement is possible, but the construction is strongly lexicalized and third singular remains widespread in conversation. Avoid teaching it as an ordinary first-person verb: آمد does not agree with ـم.
The related experiencer system is explained on Experiencer Clitics.
Tehran conversational forms
In Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), deliberate به یاد میآورم may become به یاد میارم, but spontaneous یادم میاد / یادم اومد is much more common. The contrast is register and viewpoint, not correctness.
الان یادم اومد که باید به نرگس زنگ بزنم.
alân yâd-am umad ke bâyad be Narges zang be-zanam.
I just remembered that I need to call Narges. (informal, regional: Tehran)
قیافهش یادمه، ولی اسمش اصلا یادم نمیاد.
qiyâfe-sh yâd-ame, vali esm-ash aslan yâd-am nemiyâd.
I remember what he looks like, but I can't remember his name at all. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Using the past stem in a present form
❌ او هنوز آن روز را به یاد میآوردد.
Incorrect — present آوردن uses stem آور plus third-person ـد.
✅ او هنوز جزئیات آن روز را به یاد میآورد.
u hanuz joz'iyât-e ân ruz râ be yâd mi-âvarad.
She still remembers the details of that day.
2. Treating the experiencer clitic as subject agreement
❌ دیروز ناگهان یادم آمدم.
Incorrect — ـم marks the experiencer; آمد remains third-person singular.
✅ دیروز ناگهان یادم آمد که قبض را پرداخت نکردهام.
diruz nâgahân yâd-am âmad ke qabz râ pardâkht nakarde-am.
Yesterday I suddenly remembered that I hadn't paid the bill.
3. Dropping را from a specific recalled object
❌ همان نشانی قدیمی به یاد آوردم.
Incorrect in careful Persian — همان makes the remembered object specific, so it takes را.
✅ همان نشانی قدیمی را به یاد آوردم.
hamân neshâni-ye qadimi râ be yâd âvardam.
I remembered that old address.
4. Joining the words of the verbal expression
❌ خاطره را بهیادآوردم.
Incorrect standard spacing — به، یاد, and آوردن remain separate in the verb phrase.
✅ با دیدن عکس، آن خاطره را به یاد آوردم.
bâ didan-e aks, ân khâtere râ be yâd âvardam.
Seeing the photo brought that memory back to me.
