Original Story: Yesterday's Trip

This explicitly original A2 story recounts a day trip from Tehran to Kashan. Simple past verbs move the itinerary forward, while می‌ past forms describe weather, ongoing scenes, and repeated background activity. Temporal connectors keep the sequence clear, and first-person verb endings allow the narrator to omit من and ما once their reference is established.

The prose uses neutral written standard suitable for careful reading aloud. A Tehran retelling would often replace را with رو and use more colloquial vocabulary. Review the tense contrast on Narrative Choice among Simple Past, Past Imperfective, and Perfect.

The Complete Original Story

💡
This story was written for this guide. The place names are real, but the narrator, companions, and events are fictional.

Yesterday my friend Nazanin and I went to Kashan. When we left home in the morning, a light rain was falling and the streets were still quiet. At seven we boarded the bus. On the way, Nazanin was listening to music and I was watching the scenery. A little later the rain stopped and the sun came out. When we reached Kashan, we first went to Fin Garden and walked in the courtyard for a while. After the garden, we had lunch in a small restaurant. The owner was telling us about the city’s sights. In the afternoon we went to the bazaar and bought souvenirs for our families. Traffic was heavy on the way back, so we reached Tehran later than planned. We were tired, but we greatly enjoyed our trip. (original neutral-standard story)

The translation supplies English subjects repeatedly. Persian does not: رفتیم، شدیم، رسیدیم، خوردیم already identify “we.” The narrator states من only where contrast with Nazanin makes two simultaneous activities easier to follow.

Opening and Establishing the Travelers

دیروز با دوستم نازنین به کاشان رفتیم.

diruz bâ dust-am Nâzanin be Kâshân raftim.

Yesterday my friend Nazanin and I went to Kashan. (simple past opening)

دیروز anchors the narrative. The companion phrase با دوستم نازنین precedes the destination به کاشان, and plural رفتیم includes the narrator plus Nazanin. Persian need not add ما because the participants and ending make the subject clear.

صبح زود راه افتادیم و پیش از ظهر به مقصد رسیدیم.

sobh-e zud râh oftâdim va pish az zohr be maqsad residim.

We set off early in the morning and reached our destination before noon. (original sequence)

Both simple past verbs are bounded events. They form the backbone of a journey: one event finishes, then the next becomes relevant.

Background with می‌ Past

وقتی صبح از خانه بیرون آمدیم، باران آرامی می‌بارید.

vaqti sobh az khâne birun âmadim, bârân-e ârâmi mi-bârid.

When we left home in the morning, a light rain was falling. (background in progress)

بیرون آمدیم is the completed reference event. می‌بارید views rain already underway from inside its duration.

خیابان‌ها هنوز خلوت بودند و چند مغازه تازه باز می‌شدند.

khiyâbân-hâ hanuz khalvat budand va chand maghâze tâze bâz mi-shodand.

The streets were still quiet, and a few shops were just opening. (original scene-setting)

The stative past بودند describes the streets; باز می‌شدند presents an unfolding change. These forms paint the scene rather than advance the route.

Two Simultaneous Activities

در راه، نازنین به موسیقی گوش می‌داد و من منظره را تماشا می‌کردم.

dar râh, Nâzanin be musiqi gush mi-dâd va man manzare râ tamâshâ mi-kardam.

On the way, Nazanin was listening to music and I was watching the scenery. (simultaneous background activities)

Here both subjects are stated because the contrast matters: Nazanin did one activity, and the narrator did another. Omitting من could momentarily make تماشا می‌کردم harder to attach, even though the first-person ending eventually resolves it.

بعضی از مسافرها خوابیده بودند و چند نفر آرام صحبت می‌کردند.

ba'zi az mosâfer-hâ khâbide budand va chand nafar ârâm sohbat mi-kardand.

Some passengers were asleep, and a few people were speaking quietly. (original background detail)

The past perfect-like state خوابیده بودند means they were already asleep, while صحبت می‌کردند is an activity in progress.

Moving the Story Forward

کمی بعد باران بند آمد و آفتاب بیرون آمد.

kami ba'd bârân band âmad va âftâb birun âmad.

A little later the rain stopped and the sun came out. (successive simple past events)

کمی بعد changes the narrative time. The simple past compounds بند آمد and بیرون آمد each present a new boundary. Compare ongoing می‌بارید with the endpoint بند آمد.

وقتی به کاشان رسیدیم، اول به باغ فین رفتیم.

vaqti be Kâshân residim, avval be Bâgh-e Fin raftim.

When we reached Kashan, we first went to Fin Garden. (temporal clause plus next event)

Persian keeps simple past رسیدیم in the وقتی clause because arrival precedes the next visit. It does not copy English future or perfect marking; tense is chosen from the story’s timeline.

A Background Voice Inside the Visit

صاحب رستوران برایمان از جاهای دیدنی شهر می‌گفت.

sâheb-e restorân barâ-yemân az jâ-hâ-ye didani-ye shahr mi-goft.

The restaurant owner was telling us about the city’s sights. (ongoing background speech)

The clitic ـمان on برایمان means “for/to us.” می‌گفت does not mean that the owner habitually told every customer forever; within this story it presents the speech as an unfolding background event.

وقتی غذا می‌خوردیم، او درباره‌ی خانه‌های تاریخی توضیح می‌داد.

vaqti ghazâ mi-khordim, u darbâre-ye khâne-hâ-ye târikhi towzih mi-dâd.

While we were eating, he was explaining the historic houses. (original simultaneous scene)

Both می‌ past forms stretch across the same interval. The explicit او prevents a subject switch from being missed.

Closing with Cause and Evaluation

هنگام برگشت ترافیک سنگین بود، بنابراین دیرتر از برنامه به تهران رسیدیم.

hengâm-e bargasht terâfik sangin bud, banâbar-in dirtar az barnâme be Tehrân residim.

Traffic was heavy on the way back, so we reached Tehran later than planned. (cause and result)

The state سنگین بود supplies the reason; بنابراین explicitly links it to the delayed arrival. The result returns to simple past because reaching Tehran closes a stage of the trip.

خسته بودیم، اما از سفرمان خیلی لذت بردیم.

khaste budim, ammâ az safar-emân kheyli lezzat bordim.

We were tired, but we greatly enjoyed our trip. (evaluative close)

English enjoyed the trip uses a direct object. Persian لذت بردن selects از. The possessive clitic ـمان keeps the travelers visible without repeating ما.

💡
Simple past answers “what happened next?” The می‌ past answers “what was going on then?” A connected story alternates them according to narrative function, not according to the English verb form alone.

Common Mistakes

1. Using simple past for all background

⚠️ وقتی بیرون آمدیم، باران بارید.

vaqti birun âmadim, bârân bârid.

When we came out, it rained. Grammatical, but it presents rain as a bounded event rather than weather already in progress.

✅ وقتی از ترمینال بیرون آمدیم، باران می‌بارید.

vaqti az terminâl birun âmadim, bârân mi-bârid.

When we came out of the terminal, it was raining.

2. Adding a pronoun before every verb

⚠️ ما رسیدیم و ما ناهار خوردیم و ما به بازار رفتیم.

mâ residim va mâ nâhâr khordim va mâ be bâzâr raftim.

We arrived, and we ate lunch, and we went to the bazaar. Grammatical, but repeated ما sounds contrastive and heavy without a subject change.

✅ رسیدیم، ناهار خوردیم و بعد به بازار رفتیم.

residim, nâhâr khordim va ba'd be bâzâr raftim.

We arrived, ate lunch, and then went to the bazaar. (natural pro-drop sequence)

3. Leaving a coordinated event infinitive

❌ به باغ رفتیم و در حیاط قدم زدن.

Incorrect — each narrated event needs a finite verb.

✅ به باغ رفتیم و کنار حوض کمی قدم زدیم.

be bâgh raftim va kenâr-e howz kami qadam zadim.

We went to the garden and walked beside the pool for a while.

4. Copying English object structure with لذت بردن

❌ سفر را خیلی لذت بردیم.

Incorrect — لذت بردن introduces the enjoyable experience with از.

✅ از دیدن خانه‌های قدیمی خیلی لذت بردیم.

az didan-e khâne-hâ-ye qadimi kheyli lezzat bordim.

We really enjoyed seeing the old houses.

Key Takeaways

  • Use simple past for successive bounded events that advance the trip.
  • Use می‌ past for weather, simultaneous activities, and scenes already in progress.
  • Temporal phrases such as وقتی، کمی بعد، بعد از، هنگام برگشت organize the timeline.
  • Omit a stable subject when the verb ending keeps it recoverable; state pronouns at real contrasts.
  • Learn argument frames inside the story: به مقصد رسیدن، از چیزی گفتن، از سفر لذت بردن.
