علی‌رغم، به‌رغم، صرف‌نظر از

Persian uses علی‌رغم alâ-raghm-e and به‌رغم be-raghm-e to introduce an obstacle that fails to prevent a result: “despite.” صرف‌نظر از sarf-e nazar az instead removes a factor from consideration: “regardless of,” “irrespective of,” or “apart from.” The difference is logical, not merely stylistic.

All three are most at home in (formal) and (academic) prose, public speech, and careful reporting. In conversation, با وجود and با اینکه are often more natural for “despite/although,” while جدا از can replace one sense of “apart from.”

صرف‌نظر از + noun phrasethe complement is set aside as irrelevant to the claimformal, academic, careful speechregardless of

علی‌رغم باران شدید، مسابقه ادامه پیدا کرد.

alâ-raghm-e bârân-e shadid, mosâbeqe edâme peydâ kard.

Despite the heavy rain, the match continued. (formal/reporting)

به‌رغم کمبود بودجه، طرح در موعد مقرر تمام شد.

be-raghm-e kambud-e budje, tarh dar mow'ed-e moqarrar tamâm shod.

Despite the budget shortage, the project was completed on schedule. (formal)

صرف‌نظر از قیمت، کدام مدل کیفیت بهتری دارد؟

sarf-e nazar az qeymat, kodâm model keyfiyyat-e behtari dârad?

Regardless of price, which model has better quality? (careful/formal)

The first two sentences say that rain or shortage would normally predict failure, yet the opposite occurred. The third does not say price creates an obstacle; it instructs the listener to ignore price while judging quality.

💡
Use a counterexpectation test. If the main result is surprising in light of the complement, choose علی‌رغم/به‌رغم. If the conclusion should hold whether or not the complement changes, choose صرف‌نظر از.

Ezâfe after علی‌رغم and به‌رغم

رغم is noun-like and links to its complement with ezâfe. Because it ends in a consonant, the linker is normally heard but not written: علی‌رغم مشکلات is pronounced alâ-raghm-e moshkelât. The same applies to به‌رغم.

علی‌رغم هشدار‌های هواشناسی، گروه سفر را لغو نکرد.

alâ-raghm-e hoshdâr-hâ-ye havâshenâsi, goruh safar râ laghv na-kard.

Despite the weather warnings, the group did not cancel the trip. (formal)

به‌رغم مخالفت چند عضو، پیشنهاد تصویب شد.

be-raghm-e mokhâlefat-e chand ozv, pishnehâd tasvib shod.

Despite the opposition of several members, the proposal was approved. (formal)

The written ZWNJ inside علی‌رغم and به‌رغم keeps each compound visually unified while preserving its parts. Spaced spellings are widespread in uncontrolled text, but this guide follows the standard house spelling with ZWNJ. The first element علی is the Arabic-origin preposition alâ in this fixed expression, not the personal name Ali.

💡
Two invisible relationships must not be confused: the ZWNJ is a spelling boundary inside علی‌رغم; the pronounced -e after رغم is ezâfe linking the whole expression to its complement.

صرف‌نظر از: setting a factor aside

صرف‌نظر از contains a fixed از before its complement. It can mean that a factor will not affect a decision, or it can bracket off a topic before adding the main point.

صرف‌نظر از نتیجه، این تجربه برای گروه ارزشمند بود.

sarf-e nazar az natije, in tajrobe barâ-ye goruh arzeshmand bud.

Regardless of the result, this experience was valuable for the group. (formal-neutral)

صرف‌نظر از چند اشتباه کوچک، گزارش دقیق و روشن است.

sarf-e nazar az chand eshtebâh-e kuchak, gozâresh daqiq o rowshan ast.

Apart from a few small errors, the report is accurate and clear. (formal)

The second use borders on exception: the errors are temporarily bracketed off before the overall evaluation. به‌رغم چند اشتباه would instead create the concessive reading “despite a few errors.” Both may fit the facts, but they organize the argument differently.

Do not confuse the prepositional sequence with the light verb از چیزی صرف‌نظر کردن “to give something up/forgo something”:

پس از افزایش هزینه‌ها، از خرید دستگاه صرف‌نظر کردیم.

pas az afzâyesh-e hazine-hâ, az kharid-e dastgâh sarf-e nazar kardim.

After the costs increased, we decided not to buy the device. (formal-neutral)

Here از خرید دستگاه is the complement of the verb صرف‌نظر کردن. There is no initial frame meaning “regardless of.”

Concessive clauses with اینکه

A noun phrase can follow all three constructions directly. When the complement needs its own finite verb, add اینکه. This packages a proposition where a noun phrase could stand.

علی‌رغم اینکه خسته بود، تا پایان جلسه ماند.

alâ-raghm-e inke khaste bud, tâ pâyân-e jalse mând.

Although he/she was tired, he/she stayed until the end of the meeting. (formal)

صرف‌نظر از اینکه چه کسی برنده می‌شود، رأی همه باید شمرده شود.

sarf-e nazar az inke che kasi barande mi-shavad, ra'y-e hame bâyad shomorde shavad.

Regardless of who wins, everyone's vote must be counted. (formal)

With علی‌رغم اینکه, the clause states a fact that should have predicted another outcome. With صرف‌نظر از اینکه, the embedded question or fact is declared irrelevant to the main claim. The wider system of concessive connectives belongs to concession with اگرچه and هرچند.

In ordinary conversation, the first example would more naturally begin با اینکه خسته بود. Using علی‌رغم اینکه in a casual exchange is grammatical but sounds bureaucratic or deliberately elevated.

Position and scope

An initial phrase normally frames the whole following clause, often followed by a comma. A phrase near the predicate may have narrower scope. Keep the complement next to the compound preposition; Persian does not strand از or رغم at the end as English sometimes strands a preposition.

مدیر، صرف‌نظر از سابقه‌ی افراد، همه‌ی درخواست‌ها را بررسی کرد.

modir, sarf-e nazar az sâbeqe-ye afrâd, hame-ye darkhâst-hâ râ barrasi kard.

The manager reviewed every application regardless of the applicants' background. (formal)

The commas mark the phrase as a sentence-level criterion. They are helpful, not a substitute for the internal preposition از.

Common Mistakes

1. Importing Arabic من

❌ علی‌رغم من باران، بیرون رفتیم.

Incorrect in Persian — unlike the Arabic source construction, Persian علی‌رغم takes its complement through ezâfe, without من.

✅ علی‌رغم باران سرد، بیرون رفتیم.

alâ-raghm-e bârân-e sard, birun raftim.

Despite the cold rain, we went outside.

2. Dropping ezâfe after رغم

❌ به‌رغم مشکلات ادامه دادیم.

be-raghm moshkelât edâme dâdim

Incorrect reading — despite its invisible spelling, ezâfe links رغم to مشکلات.

✅ به‌رغم مشکلات فراوان ادامه دادیم.

be-raghm-e moshkelât-e farâvân edâme dâdim.

Despite numerous problems, we continued.

3. Omitting از after صرف‌نظر

❌ صرف‌نظر هزینه، باید کیفیت را بررسی کنیم.

Incorrect — prepositional صرف‌نظر requires از before its complement.

✅ صرف‌نظر از هزینه، باید کیفیت را بررسی کنیم.

sarf-e nazar az hazine, bâyad keyfiyyat râ barrasi konim.

Regardless of cost, we must examine quality.

4. Placing a finite clause without اینکه

❌ علی‌رغم هوا سرد بود، پیاده رفتیم.

Incorrect — a finite concessive complement requires اینکه.

✅ علی‌رغم اینکه هوا سرد بود، پیاده رفتیم.

alâ-raghm-e inke havâ sard bud, piyâde raftim.

Although the weather was cold, we walked.

Key Takeaways

  • علی‌رغم and به‌رغم mark a defeated expectation; صرف‌نظر از removes a factor from consideration.
  • Pronounce ezâfe after رغم, but keep fixed از after صرف‌نظر.
  • This guide writes the compounds with ZWNJ: علی‌رغم، به‌رغم، صرف‌نظر.
  • Add اینکه before a finite clausal complement.
  • In casual conversation, با وجود/با اینکه is usually less formal than علی‌رغم/به‌رغم.
