به خاطر and به دلیل

Persian commonly introduces a noun-phrase cause with به‌خاطر be-khâter-e “because of/for the sake of” and به‌دلیل be-dalil-e “because of/due to.” Both link to their complement with ezâfe: به‌خاطرِ ترافیک, به‌دلیلِ خرابی آسانسور. The linker is audible even though ordinary unvowelized Persian does not write a kasre after خاطر or دلیل.

The main contrast is one of perspective and register, not two completely separate meanings. به‌خاطر is the broad everyday choice and can present a cause or someone's motive. به‌دلیل sounds more analytical and is frequent in reports, notices, and academic explanation. A finite “because” clause normally uses چون or expands the prepositional expression with اینکه.

Construction and register map

FormComplementTypical forceRegister
به‌خاطرِ + noun phraseperson, event, conditionbecause of; motivated by; for the sake ofneutral/current
به‌دلیلِ + noun phrasestated cause or evidencebecause of; due toformal, administrative, academic
به‌خاطر اینکه + clausefinite propositionbecauseneutral; frequent in speech
به‌دلیل اینکه + clausefinite propositionbecause/due to the fact thatformal, often heavy
چون + clausefinite propositionbecauseneutral standard

This page consistently writes به‌خاطر and به‌دلیل with a ZWNJ to display each lexical unit; many Iranian publications instead use the spaced spellings به خاطر and به دلیل. That editorial variation does not create a pause or change the audible ezâfe before the complement.

به‌خاطر for an everyday cause

به‌خاطر naturally explains why an event occurred or why someone acted. The cause may be external, personal, or evaluative.

به‌خاطر ترافیک بیست دقیقه دیر رسیدم.

be-khâter-e terâfik bist daqiqe dir residam.

I arrived twenty minutes late because of the traffic. (neutral standard)

برنامه‌ی پیک‌نیک را به‌خاطر باران عوض کردیم.

barnâme-ye pik-nik râ be-khâter-e bârân avaz kardim.

We changed the picnic plan because of the rain. (neutral standard)

او به‌خاطر یک سوءتفاهم از جلسه بیرون رفت.

u be-khâter-e yek su'-tafâhom az jalase birun raft.

He or she left the meeting because of a misunderstanding. (neutral standard)

The cause phrase may come first to frame the whole statement or remain near the predicate. Initial به‌خاطر ترافیک makes the explanation the starting point; final placement often answers an explicit “why?” Neither position changes the preposition's internal form.

Motive and “for someone's sake”

With a person or valued goal, به‌خاطر may express the motive “for the sake of,” not an accidental cause. Context distinguishes “because of you” from “for your sake.”

به‌خاطر آرامش بچه‌ها خانه‌ی ساکت‌تری پیدا کردند.

be-khâter-e ârâmesh-e bachche-hâ khâne-ye sâket-tari peydâ kardand.

For the children's peace and quiet, they found a quieter home. (motive/benefit)

فقط به‌خاطر تو این فرصت را قبول کردم.

faqat be-khâter-e to in forsat râ qabul kardam.

I accepted this opportunity only because of you/for your sake. (neutral; context resolves cause versus motive)

The ambiguity is real, not a defect in the grammar. If the difference matters, state the intended relation more fully: برای کمک به تو “in order to help you” clearly expresses a goal, while به‌علت کاری که کردی “because of what you did” clearly identifies a cause.

💡
With a personal complement, do not assume one fixed English translation. به‌خاطر تو can blame a person, credit them as the reason, or present an action as done for their sake.

به‌دلیل for explicit and formal causation

به‌دلیل packages a cause as an explicit reason. It is especially frequent in public notices, news reports, institutional messages, and academic prose.

پرواز به‌دلیل مه شدید لغو شد.

parvâz be-dalil-e meh-e shadid laghv shod.

The flight was canceled because of heavy fog. (formal/public information)

کتابخانه به‌دلیل تعمیرات تا شنبه بسته است.

ketâbkhâne be-dalil-e ta'mirât tâ shanbe baste ast.

The library is closed until Saturday due to repairs. (formal notice)

نتایج به‌دلیل کمبود داده قابل تعمیم نیست.

natâyej be-dalil-e kambud-e dâde qâbel-e ta'mim nist.

The results cannot be generalized because of insufficient data. (academic)

These sentences could use به‌خاطر without changing the basic causal facts, but the tone would be less institutional. به‌دلیل does not make a claim scientifically true; it merely presents the following phrase as the stated reason.

The ezâfe spine

Both expressions end in a consonant-final noun and therefore require audible ezâfe before an overt complement:

Written phraseRomanizationInternal analysis
به‌خاطر بارش برفbe-khâter-e bâresh-e barfcompound preposition + cause; a second ezâfe links بارش to برف
به‌دلیل خرابی دستگاهbe-dalil-e kharâbi-ye dastgâhcompound preposition + cause; internal ezâfe links خرابی to دستگاه
به‌خاطر تصمیم مدیرbe-khâter-e tasmim-e modircompound preposition + cause; internal ezâfe identifies whose decision

جلسه به‌خاطر تغییر برنامه‌ی مدیر عقب افتاد.

jalase be-khâter-e taghyir-e barnâme-ye modir aqab oftâd.

The meeting was postponed because of the manager's schedule change. (neutral standard)

There are three relations in the example: به‌خاطرِ تغییر, تغییرِ برنامه, and برنامه‌ی مدیر. A compound preposition does not flatten the noun phrase that follows it.

Pronominal complements

An independent pronoun follows the audible ezâfe: به‌خاطر من، به‌خاطر شما. When the referent is accessible, a clitic can attach to خاطر: به‌خاطرم، به‌خاطرت، به‌خاطرش، به‌خاطرمان، به‌خاطرتان، به‌خاطرشان.

به‌خاطرت از مسیر طولانی‌تری آمدم.

be-khâter-at az masir-e tulâni-tari âmadam.

I came by a longer route for your sake. (neutral standard; familiar singular)

جلسه عقب افتاد، ولی تقصیر او نبود؛ به‌خاطرش سرزنشش نکن.

jalase aqab oftâd, vali taqsir-e u nabud; be-khâter-ash sarzanesh-ash nakon.

The meeting was delayed, but it wasn't their fault; don't blame them for it. (careful spoken standard; context supplies the causal referent)

The two occurrences of ـش in the second example have different hosts and functions. In به‌خاطرش, it is the complement of the compound preposition; in سرزنشش, it is the object of the light-verb expression. A clitic must attach to a host and cannot stand alone.

Noun phrase or because-clause?

Use the bare prepositional construction before a noun phrase. If the reason contains a finite subject and verb, choose چون + clause, or add اینکه after the compound expression.

چون جاده بسته بود، از مسیر دیگری رفتیم.

chun jâdde baste bud, az masir-e digari raftim.

Because the road was closed, we took another route. (neutral standard)

به‌خاطر اینکه جاده بسته بود، از مسیر کوهستانی رفتیم.

be-khâter-e inke jâdde baste bud, az masir-e kuhestâni raftim.

Because the road was closed, we took the mountain route. (neutral, especially speech)

به‌دلیل اینکه اطلاعات کامل نبود، تصمیم نهایی به تعویق افتاد.

be-dalil-e inke ettelâ'ât kâmel nabud, tasmim-e nahâyi be ta'viq oftâd.

Because the information was incomplete, the final decision was postponed. (formal; grammatically current but heavier than چون)

The extended به‌دلیل اینکه is grammatical, but concise edited prose may prefer چون اطلاعات کامل نبود or the nominal به‌دلیل ناقص بودن اطلاعات. The full system of reason clauses appears on Reason with چون and Purpose with تا.

💡
Match the connector to the complement: به‌دلیلِ + noun phrase, but چون + finite clause. به‌دلیل اینکه + clause is possible when the more formal, explicit packaging is useful.

Cause versus purpose

Cause explains what led to an event; purpose names the intended outcome. به‌خاطر امتحان سفر را لغو کردم makes the exam the reason for canceling. برای امتحان درس خواندم makes doing well or preparing for the exam the goal.

برای مصاحبه تمرین کردم، اما به‌خاطر بیماری نتوانستم بروم.

barâ-ye mosâhebe tamrin kardam, ammâ be-khâter-e bimâri natavânestam beravam.

I practiced for the interview, but I couldn't go because of illness. (purpose contrasted with cause)

For the goal relation, see Purpose and Beneficiary with برای.

A short dialogue

چرا جلسه‌ی عصر لغو شد؟

cherâ jalase-ye asr laghv shod?

Why was the afternoon meeting canceled? (careful spoken standard)

به‌خاطر قطعی برق.

be-khâter-e qat'i-ye barq.

Because of the power outage. (neutral spoken fragment answer)

The first part is a fragment whose missing predicate is recovered from the question. Ezâfe remains audible even in the short answer.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting the audible ezâfe before the cause

❌ پرواز به‌دلیل مه لغو شد.

parvâz be-dalil meh laghv shod

Incorrect reading — دلیل and مه are linked by audible -e.

✅ پرواز صبح به‌دلیل مه غلیظ لغو شد.

parvâz-e sobh be-dalil-e meh-e ghaliz laghv shod.

The morning flight was canceled because of dense fog.

2. Using purpose برای for an unintended cause

❌ مسابقه برای باران لغو شد.

Incorrect for the intended cause — باران was not the goal of canceling the match.

✅ مسابقه به‌دلیل باران شدید لغو شد.

mosâbeqe be-dalil-e bârân-e shadid laghv shod.

The match was canceled because of heavy rain.

3. Putting a finite clause directly after دلیل

❌ به‌دلیل هوا بد بود، پرواز نکردیم.

Incorrect — a finite reason clause needs اینکه or a clause connector such as چون.

✅ چون هوا بد بود، آن روز پرواز نکردیم.

chun havâ bad bud, ân ruz parvâz nakardim.

Because the weather was bad, we didn't fly that day.

4. Adding را after the prepositional complement

❌ به‌خاطر ترافیک را دیر رسیدم.

Incorrect — ترافیک is governed by the compound preposition and cannot take object marker را.

✅ به‌خاطر ترافیک سنگین دیر به فرودگاه رسیدم.

be-khâter-e terâfik-e sangin dir be forudgâh residam.

I reached the airport late because of heavy traffic.

5. Stranding a pronominal clitic

❌ این کار را به‌خاطر ش انجام دادم.

Incorrect — ـش cannot stand as a separate word after خاطر.

✅ این کار را به‌خاطرش انجام دادم.

in kâr râ be-khâter-ash anjâm dâdam.

I did this because of him/her/it or for their sake. (context resolves the relation)

Key Takeaways

  • به‌خاطرِ + noun phrase is the broad current expression for cause, motive, or “for the sake of.”
  • به‌دلیلِ + noun phrase presents an explicit cause in formal, administrative, or academic style.
  • Pronounce ezâfe before the complement and preserve every internal ezâfe in a longer cause phrase.
  • Use چون + finite clause or the expanded به‌خاطر/به‌دلیل اینکه + clause when the reason has its own verb.
  • Keep cause separate from purpose: به‌خاطر explains why something happened; برای points toward an intended goal.
