Professional editing is not a final spell-check. It is a sequence of decisions about textual authority, Unicode characters, word boundaries, terminology, syntax, density, quotation, and audience. This path introduces no new Persian construction. It organizes the specialist pages you have already studied into a six-pass workflow whose changes can be explained and, when necessary, reversed.
At C1, the goal is not to make every text maximally formal. A transcript, public information page, scholarly article, legal notice, and modernized classical edition require different interventions. The editor's first responsibility is to identify the text's contract and preserve meaningful variation inside it.
Workflow map
| Pass | Question | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| ۱ | What is the source and editorial brief? | scope note and protected features |
| ۲ | Are characters and word boundaries standard? | orthographically normalized copy |
| ۳ | Is terminology stable and appropriate? | term sheet with decisions |
| ۴ | Is formal density readable? | syntactically revised copy |
| ۵ | Are quotations and interventions attributable? | source and intervention log |
| ۶ | Does the final style fit audience and genre? | clean text plus editorial memo |
Pass ۱: Fix the editorial brief before the text
Write down the intended audience, publication type, baseline variety, desired degree of modernization, and features that must be preserved. In a scholarly quotation, historical spelling may be evidence. In a current ministry webpage, Arabic character variants, broken ZWNJ, and mixed punctuation are usually encoding or normalization problems. In a dialogue transcript, colloquial morphology may be the data and must not be standardized away.
این گفتوگو عمدا محاورهای است و صورتهای گفتاری آن حفظ میشوند.
in goft-o-gu amdan mohâvere-i ast va surat-hâ-ye goftâri-ye ân hefz mi-shavand.
This dialogue is deliberately colloquial, and its spoken forms will be preserved. (editorial scope note)
املای نقلقول دستنخورده میماند و توضیح ویراستار در پانوشت میآید.
emlâ-ye naql-qowl dast-na-khorde mi-mânad va towzih-e virâstâr dar pâ-nevesht mi-âyad.
The quotation's spelling will remain untouched, and the editor's explanation will appear in a footnote.
Your first review loop is adversarial: for every proposed change, ask whether you are correcting an error, enforcing the brief, or merely preferring your own voice. Only the first two justify silent revision.
Pass ۲: Normalize characters and boundaries
Work through Spaces, Half-Spaces, and the ZWNJ, The Prefixes می and نمی, Plural and Comparative with ZWNJ, and Persian Punctuation.
Perform a mechanical sweep before stylistic revision: Persian ک/ی, Persian digits where required, می/نمی, productive ها, comparative boundaries, silent-he ezâfe هی, spacing around punctuation, and directionality. Keep a separate list of ambiguous lexical compounds; a mechanical ZWNJ rule cannot decide every dictionary spelling.
در نسخهی ویرایششده، میرود و نمیماند با نیمفاصله نوشته شدهاند.
dar noskhe-ye virâyesh-shode, mi-ravad va nemi-mânad bâ nim-fâsele neveshte shode-and.
In the edited version, میرود and نمیماند have been written with ZWNJ. (orthographic report)
پیش از جستوجوی واژهها، نویسههای عربی و فارسی را از هم جدا کردم.
pish az jost-o-ju-ye vâzhe-hâ, nevise-hâ-ye Arabi va Fârsi râ az ham jodâ kardam.
Before searching the words, I distinguished Arabic and Persian character variants.
Pass ۳: Build a term sheet, not a purity list
Read Persian-derived or Arabic-derived Formal Vocabulary and Persian and Arabic Elements in Hybrid Words. Select terms by established collocation, field, audience, and institutional usage—not by an automatic preference for one etymological layer.
Record the chosen term, accepted variant, rejected variant for this project, source, and rationale. Search the whole document for related forms. If داده is the chosen term, check plurals, ezâfe chains, captions, and quotations separately; do not alter a quoted author's terminology silently.
در سراسر گزارش، واژهی داده را برای اطلاعات گردآوریشده به کار میبریم.
dar sarâsar-e gozâresh, vâzhe-ye dâde râ barâ-ye ettelâ'ât-e gard-âvari-shode be kâr mi-barim.
Throughout the report, we use the term داده for the information collected. (terminology decision)
این دو اصطلاح مترادف کامل نیستند و در جدول تعریف جداگانه دارند.
in do estelâh motarâdef-e kâmel nistand va dar jadval ta'rif-e jodâgâne dârand.
These two terms are not complete synonyms and have separate definitions in the table.
Pass ۴: Control density and reference
Review Nominal Density in Academic Prose, Ezâfe Chains in Academic Prose, and Nominalization or Finite Clause.
Mark every noun chain longer than three links, passive, empty light-verb frame, and pronoun whose antecedent crosses a clause. Do not delete all nominalizations: they are valuable for naming stable processes and carrying given information. Revise when density conceals who did what, makes two attachments equally plausible, or buries the main claim.
پس از بازبینی، تصمیمگیرنده را در یک بند مستقل مشخص کردیم.
pas az bâz-bini, tasmim-girande râ dar yek band-e mostaqell moshakhkhas kardim.
After review, we identified the decision-maker in an independent clause. (clarity revision)
این اسمسازی لازم است، چون فرایند پیشتر تعریف شده است.
in esm-sâzi lâzem ast, chon farâyand pish-tar ta'rif shode ast.
This nominalization is necessary because the process has already been defined.
Revision goal: reduce only the density that blocks retrieval. A shorter sentence is not automatically clearer if it removes logical relations or forces repetitive nouns.
Pass ۵: Attribute sources and interventions
For every quotation, record author, work, edition or stable source, page or section where available, and any modernization. Distinguish quotation, paraphrase, translation, and your own reconstruction. Review Quoting and Reporting Others before changing person, tense, or deixis in reported material.
عبارت داخل گیومه عین نقلقول است و املای آن نوسازی نشده است.
ebârat-e dâkhel-e giyume ayn-e naql-qowl ast va emlâ-ye ân now-sâzi na-shode ast.
The phrase in quotation marks is a verbatim quotation, and its spelling has not been modernized.
این جمله بازنویسی من است و نباید به نویسنده نسبت داده شود.
in jomle bâz-nevisi-ye man ast va na-bâyad be nevisande nesbat dâde shavad.
This sentence is my paraphrase and must not be attributed to the author.
Pass ۶: Read aloud, defend, and release
Run a register pass using Mixing Written and Colloquial Forms. Then read the text aloud in careful standard Persian. This catches unattached ezâfe, overloaded subjects, repeated connectors, and clauses whose verb arrives too late for working memory.
Prepare an editorial memo with five representative changes: original, revision, category, rule or source, and effect. A professional decision is defensible without being universal; another publication may have a different brief.
این صورت در گفتوگو طبیعی است، اما با شیوهنامهی گزارش رسمی سازگار نیست.
in surat dar goft-o-gu tabi'i ast, ammâ bâ shive-nâme-ye gozâresh-e rasmi sâzgâr nist.
This form is natural in conversation but does not fit the formal report's style guide.
تغییر را ثبت کردم تا ویراستار بعدی بتواند دلیلش را بررسی کند.
taghyir râ sabt kardam tâ virâstâr-e ba'di be-tavânad dalil-ash râ barrasi konad.
I logged the change so the next editor can examine its rationale.
Common Mistakes
Standardizing a transcript into a different register
⚠️ همهی میخوامها را در پیادهسازی مصاحبه به میخواهم تبدیل کردم.
hame-ye mi-khâm-hâ râ dar piyâde-sâzi-ye mosâhebe be mi-khâham tabdil kardam.
I changed every colloquial میخوام to میخواهم in the interview transcript. (grammatical forms, but the intervention destroys spoken-register evidence)
✅ صورت گفتاری را حفظ کردم و شکل معیار را فقط در یادداشت توضیح دادم.
surat-e goftâri râ hefz kardam va shekl-e me'yâr râ faqat dar yâd-dâsht towzih dâdam.
I preserved the spoken form and explained the standard form only in a note.
Treating all ZWNJ decisions as optional typography
❌ آنها نمیروند و کتاب ها را نمیآورند.
Incorrect standard orthography: the negative and imperfective prefixes and plural suffix require standard boundaries.
✅ آنها نمیروند و کتابها را نمیآورند.
ânhâ nemi-ravand va ketâb-hâ râ nemi-âvarand.
They are not going, and they are not bringing the books. (standard orthography)
Replacing established terms for etymological purity
⚠️ همهی اصطلاحهای عربی را حذف کردم، حتی وقتی اصطلاحهای تخصصی جاافتاده بودند.
hame-ye estelâh-hâ-ye Arabi râ hazf kardam, hattâ vaqti estelâh-hâ-ye takhassosi-ye jâ-oftâde budand.
I removed all Arabic-derived terms, even when they were established technical terminology. (purist over-editing)
✅ اصطلاح را بر پایهی کاربرد تخصصی و نیاز مخاطب انتخاب کردم.
estelâh râ bar pâye-ye kârbord-e takhassosi va niyâz-e mokhâtab entekhâb kardam.
I selected the term on the basis of specialist usage and audience need.
Silently modernizing a quotation
⚠️ املای نقلقول را عوض کردم و تغییرها را ثبت نکردم.
emlâ-ye naql-qowl râ avaz kardam va taghyir-hâ râ sabt na-kardam.
I changed the quotation's spelling and did not record the changes. (unacknowledged intervention)
✅ نقلقول را دستنخورده نگه داشتم و صورت نوسازیشده را جدا آوردم.
naql-qowl râ dast-na-khorde negah dâshtam va surat-e now-sâzi-shode râ jodâ âvardam.
I left the quotation untouched and supplied the modernized form separately.
Diagnostic exit task
Edit a 300-word formal text that contains inconsistent ک/ی, six boundary errors, two competing technical terms, one opaque nominal chain, a colloquial leak, and an unattributed paraphrase. Submit the clean text, term sheet, source note, and change memo. Pass when every mechanical change is complete, meaningful source variation remains protected, terminology is internally consistent, density is reduced without erasing logic, and five representative decisions can be defended from the linked specialist pages.
Key Takeaways
- Establish source, audience, genre, and modernization policy before changing the text.
- Separate Unicode and boundary normalization from lexical, syntactic, and stylistic editing.
- Choose terminology by usage, field, and audience rather than etymological purity.
- Record quotation changes and editorial reasoning; professional judgment remains brief-specific, not universally final.
