Persian suffixes often create a unit that is one word grammatically but visibly segmented in writing. Productive plural ها -hâ, comparative تر -tar, and superlative ترین -tarin normally illustrate this clearly: کتابها، بزرگتر، بزرگترین. A ZWNJ keeps the suffix inside the word while preventing the host's final letter from joining to it.
English spelling offers no exact equivalent. English either closes a suffix completely (small + er = smaller) or uses an ordinary space (more important). Persian can represent the middle ground directly. This page explains that orthographic boundary; the meanings and syntax belong to Regular Plural with ها and Basic Comparative with تر.
Productive plural ها
After a host ending in a joinable letter, house style writes U+200C before ها:
| Singular | Plural | With ezâfe | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| کتاب | کتابها | کتابهای من | ketâb-hâ; ketâb-hâ-ye man |
| دوست | دوستها | دوستهای قدیمی | dust-hâ; dust-hâ-ye qadimi |
| خانه | خانهها | خانههای شهر | khâne-hâ; khâne-hâ-ye shahr |
The linker yeh in کتابهای من comes after plural ها. The sequence is stem + ZWNJ + ها + ی. Do not put an ordinary space between کتاب and های, because “my books” contains an inflected noun, not three separate words.
کتابهای من هنوز در کارتن هستند.
ketâb-hâ-ye man hanuz dar kârton hastand.
My books are still in the box.
خانهها از اینجا دیده میشوند.
khâne-hâ az injâ dide mi-shavand.
The houses can be seen from here.
Why final vowels look different
There are two useful vowel-final patterns. A word ending in /e/ is normally spelled with joinable ه, so the ZWNJ visibly matters: خانهها، بچهها. A word ending in long /â/ or /u/ normally ends in non-joining ا or و. The suffix therefore looks detached even before software processes the ZWNJ. House style still stores the same morphological boundary: صداها، دانشجوها.
| Host ending | Example | What creates the visible break? |
|---|---|---|
| /e/ written ه | میوهها | ZWNJ blocks an otherwise possible join |
| /â/ written ا | صداها | ا already blocks the join; ZWNJ records the boundary |
| /u/ written و | دانشجوها | و already blocks the join; ZWNJ records the boundary |
Because ا and و are non-connecting, صداها and دانشجوها may look exactly like strings typed without ZWNJ. The distinction is in the code points, not necessarily in the pixels. Iranian publications vary in these visually inert positions; this guide retains ZWNJ consistently so search, editing, and morphological processing see the same plural boundary after every host.
صداها از راهرو میآمد.
sedâ-hâ az râhro mi-âmad.
The sounds were coming from the hallway.
دانشجوها نتیجه را فردا میگیرند.
dâneshju-hâ natije râ fardâ mi-girand.
The students will get the result tomorrow.
This is an honest difficulty of Persian digital spelling: typography, morphology, and code-point consistency do not always pull in exactly the same direction. Learn the obligatory visible boundaries first, then follow one editorial style consistently for visually inert ZWNJs after non-joining letters.
Comparative تر
Productive -تر follows the same central logic after a joinable host: بزرگتر، روشنتر، سادهتر. The adjective and suffix form one comparative word, so an ordinary space is too strong; direct joining is too opaque.
این اتاق از قبلی روشنتر است.
in otâq az qabli rowshan-tar ast.
This room is brighter than the previous one.
مسیر کنار رودخانه کوتاهتر است.
masir-e kenâr-e rudkhâne kutâh-tar ast.
The route beside the river is shorter.
After non-joining ا or و, established spelling commonly closes the suffix directly: زیباتر، داناتر. Again, there is no unwanted join for ZWNJ to prevent. Do not interpret the absence of a visible gap as a different grammatical structure: zibâ-tar still contains adjective + comparative suffix.
این طرح از نسخهی قبلی زیباتر است.
in tarh az noskhe-ye qabli zibâ-tar ast.
This design is more beautiful than the previous version.
Superlative ترین
The productive superlative has the same boundary: مهمترین، سادهترین، بزرگترین. Its internal morphology is comparative -تر plus -ین, but you type ترین as one suffixal sequence after the boundary.
این مهمترین بخش گزارش است.
in mohem-tarin bakhsh-e gozâresh ast.
This is the most important part of the report.
سادهترین راه این است که زنگ بزنیم.
sâde-tarin râh in ast ke zang bezanim.
The easiest way is for us to call.
Superlatives frequently precede the noun, as in مهمترین بخش, without an ezâfe after the superlative. A comparative modifier can instead follow a noun through ezâfe: اتاق بزرگتر otâq-e bozorg-tar. Those are syntactic choices, not alternative ways of spacing the suffix.
Lexicalized closed forms
A small high-frequency group is conventionally closed: بهتر، بهترین، کمتر، کمترین، بیشتر، بیشترین. These words are historically and morphologically related to comparison, but their spelling is lexicalized. Do not “regularize” بهتر to a half-spaced form.
بهترین زمان برای خرید صبح زود است.
behtarin zamân barâ-ye kharid sobh-e zud ast.
The best time to shop is early in the morning.
امروز وقت کمتری داریم.
emruz vaqt-e kamtari dârim.
We have less time today.
There is no universal visual test for lexicalization. The productive default is half-spaced after a joinable host; the few common closed forms must be memorized.
Common Mistakes
1. Fully joining a productive plural
❌ کتابها روی میز هستند.
Incorrect house orthography — productive ها needs a ZWNJ after the joinable final ب.
✅ کتابها روی میز هستند.
ketâb-hâ ru-ye miz hastand.
The books are on the table.
2. Replacing ZWNJ with an ordinary space
❌ این اتاق بزرگ تر است.
Incorrect standard spacing — تر is a suffix, not a separate word.
✅ این اتاق بزرگتر است.
in otâq bozorg-tar ast.
This room is bigger.
3. Fully joining a productive superlative
❌ این مهمترین دلیل است.
Incorrect house orthography — the productive boundary before ترین must remain visible.
✅ این مهمترین دلیل است.
in mohem-tarin dalil ast.
This is the most important reason.
4. Adding a visible hyphen to Persian script
❌ دوست-ها منتظر هستند.
Incorrect — the learner romanization uses a hyphen, but Persian target text uses ZWNJ.
✅ دوستها منتظر هستند.
dust-hâ montazer hastand.
The friends are waiting.
5. Treating a lexicalized form as a productive half-spaced one
❌ این راه بهتر است.
Incorrect modern spelling — بهتر is a lexicalized closed form.
✅ این راه بهتر است.
in râh behtar ast.
This route is better.
Key Takeaways
Use ZWNJ before productive ها in house style, including after non-joining hosts where it may be visually inert: کتابها، صداها. Use it before productive تر and ترین where a joinable host requires the visible boundary: سادهتر، مهمترین; conventional زیباتر closes after non-joining ا. Keep ordinary spaces between words, visible hyphens out of Persian text, and memorize lexicalized closed forms such as بهتر.
