Compounds with شدن

In lexical compounds with شدن, the grammatical subject normally enters a state, relation, or result: a person متولد می‌شود “is born,” two people دوست می‌شوند “become friends,” a plan عوض می‌شود “changes,” a learner موفق می‌شود “succeeds,” a room آماده می‌شود “becomes ready,” and a meeting تمام می‌شود “ends.”

English may use be, become, get, finish, or a passive translation. Persian organizes these expressions around a changing participant plus شدن. That participant is the subject, not a direct object. The nonverbal element and light verb form one lexical predicate whose complements must be learned together.

The general light-verb architecture is introduced on Compound Verbs as Single Lexical Predicates. Here the focus is lexical selection and the roles inside these six high-frequency compounds.

متولد شدن: birth as an event with a subject

The person born is the subject. Place and year normally use Persian does not insert an agent unless a different construction is intended.

man dar Kermân motavalled shodam, ammâ dar Rasht bozorg shodam.

I was born in Kerman but grew up in Rasht. (neutral)

dokhtar-eshân dar bahâr-e 1400 motavalled shod.

Their daughter was born in spring 1400. (neutral standard)

Although English uses a passive-looking was born, modern Persian متولد شدن is best learned as a lexical intransitive compound. It does not behave like a freely created passive of متولد کردن in ordinary biography.

دوست شدن: entering a reciprocal relation

با کسی دوست شدن means “become friends with someone.” The با phrase identifies the other participant. With a plural subject, both new friends can be named together. This differs sharply from کسی را دوست داشتن “like/love someone.”

dar kelâs-e zabân bâ Sârâ dust shodam.

I became friends with Sara in language class. (neutral)

Mahdi va Kâmrân az dowrân-e dabirestân dust shodand.

Mehdi and Kamran became friends in high school. (neutral)

man hamkâr-e jadid-am râ dust dâram, vali hanuz bâ ham dust nashode-im.

I like my new colleague, but we haven't become friends yet. (contrast between liking and friendship relation)

💡
Use the marker as a diagnostic: کسی را دوست داشتن has a liked object; با کسی دوست شدن has a reciprocal partner.

عوض شدن: the changed entity is subject

عوض شدن reports that something changes, whether spontaneously, through an unnamed cause, or because the cause is not relevant. عوض کردن introduces an agent who changes something. The alternation is a valency contrast.

zamân-e parvâz dobâre avaz shod.

The flight time changed again. (intransitive; changed item as subject)

sherkat zamân-e parvâz râ dobâre avaz kard.

The company changed the flight time again. (transitive; causer named)

ba'd az ta'mir, sedâ-ye motor kâmelan avaz shode ast.

After the repair, the engine sound has changed completely. (present result)

The intransitive does not assert that no one caused the change; it simply does not encode a causer as subject.

موفق شدن: success and achieved action

Use در کاری موفق شدن for a domain or project. To say “manage to do something,” follow موفق شدن with a finite subjunctive clause whose understood subject normally matches the successful participant.

tim dar jazb-e sarmâye-ye lâzem movaffaq shod.

The team succeeded in securing the necessary funding. (formal-neutral)

bâlâkhare movaffaq shodam barâ-ye fardâ belit begiram.

I finally managed to get a ticket for tomorrow. (neutral conversation)

hanuz movaffaq nashode-and ellat-e khatâ râ peydâ konand.

They have not yet managed to find the cause of the error. (neutral standard)

آماده شدن: readiness as a change

آماده بودن is a state; آماده شدن is entering or progressing toward readiness. The purpose or event commonly takes برای. A causer uses آماده کردن.

dâram barâ-ye mosâhebe-ye fardâ âmâde mi-shavam.

I'm getting ready for tomorrow's interview. (neutral standard)

gozâresh tâ zohr âmâde mi-shavad.

The report will be ready by noon. (neutral; report reaches a ready state)

gozâresh ro tâ zohr âmâde mi-konam.

I'll get the report ready by noon. (informal; agent and object explicit)

تمام شدن: event or supply reaches its endpoint

The subject of تمام شدن is what ends or runs out: a meeting, film, battery, food, or time period. A person who completes a task uses transitive تمام کردن.

jalase dirtar az entezâr tamâm shod.

The meeting ended later than expected. (neutral)

shârz-e gushi-am vasat-e tamâs tamâm shod.

My phone battery ran out in the middle of the call. (neutral conversation)

man gozâresh râ dishab tamâm kardam.

I finished the report last night. (transitive کردن; finisher named)

A short progress dialogue

— barâ-ye erâ'e âmâde shodin? — taqriban; eslâyd-hâ tamum shode, vali tartib-eshun avaz shode.

— Are you ready for the presentation? — Almost; the slides are finished, but their order has changed. (informal workplace conversation)

Common Mistakes

1. Giving عوض شدن a direct object

Incorrect valency — the changing item is subject with شدن; an agent changing an object needs کردن.

barnâme avaz shod, chun zamân-e jalase taghyir kard.

The plan changed because the meeting time changed.

Incorrect argument frame — use با for becoming friends, or دوست داشتن for liking someone.

ba'd az safar bâ hamkâr-am dust shodam.

I became friends with my colleague after the trip.

3. Using an infinitive after موفق شدن

Incorrect complement — the achieved event needs a finite subjunctive form.

pish az pâyân-e ruz movaffaq shodim moshkel râ hal konim.

We managed to solve the problem before the end of the day.

4. Treating every شدن compound as a syntactic passive

dar jomle-ye «jalase tamâm shod», yek nafar hatman jalase râ tamâm karde ast.

In ‘the meeting ended,’ someone necessarily ended it. (well formed, but the inference is false: تمام شدن can be an ordinary intransitive endpoint)

jalase pas az do sâ'at tamâm shod; in jomle be-tanhâyi nemi-guyad kasi ân râ tamâm karde ast yâ na.

The meeting ended after two hours; this sentence alone does not say whether someone brought it to an end.

Key Takeaways

  • In these شدن compounds, the participant entering a state or result is normally the subject.
  • متولد شدن is a lexical birth predicate; دوست شدن selects a reciprocal partner with با.
  • عوض شدن، آماده شدن، تمام شدن contrast with transitive کردن counterparts that add a causer.
  • موفق شدن takes در for a domain or a finite subjunctive for an achieved action.
  • A شدن compound may express ordinary change of state rather than a syntactic passive.
