از سوی دیگر presents two perspectives that must be considered together: “on the one hand ... on the other hand.” It is a characteristic organizer of (formal) and (academic) Persian, especially when a writer weighs benefits against costs, two causal pressures, or evidence pointing in different directions.
The nouns سو and سوی originally denote a side or direction, but the paired discourse marker does not describe physical sides. Its organizing function is abstract: the first half opens one line of evaluation and the second supplies a balancing or contrasting line. Clear writing makes the two halves parallel enough for the reader to compare.
The paired architecture
| First frame | Second frame | Relation | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
Q | balanced perspectives; Q often contrasts with P | formal/academic |
Q | slightly more compressed formal variant | formal/academic |
Q | same basic balance in less elevated wording | neutral; common in speech |
In از سوی دیگر, written سوی represents سو followed by ezafe: az suy-e digar. The two halves are not exact word-for-word copies because the first contains یک “one” and the second contains ezafe-linked دیگر “other.” Treat the whole pair as a conventional frame.
az yek su, in tarh hazine-hâ-ye edâri râ kâhesh mi-dahad; az suy-e digar, ejrâ-ye ân be âmuzesh-e gostarde niyâz dârad.
On the one hand, this plan reduces administrative costs; on the other hand, implementing it requires extensive training. (academic; benefit balanced against cost)
az yek su, shavâhed-e târikhi in farziye râ ta'yid mi-konad; az suy-e digar, dâde-hâ-ye zabâni hanuz kâfi nist.
On the one hand, the historical evidence supports this hypothesis; on the other hand, the linguistic data are still insufficient. (academic; countervailing evidence)
Contrast, balance, and addition
The second perspective often limits the first, but it need not contradict it logically. Both clauses can describe pressures pulling in different directions, two groups with different interests, or complementary dimensions of one problem. The central requirement is balanced relevance.
in siyâsat az yek su forsat-hâ-ye shoghli-ye tâze-i ijâd mi-konad va az suy-e digar feshâr bar manâbe'-e âb râ afzâyesh mi-dahad.
This policy creates new jobs on the one hand and increases pressure on water resources on the other. (formal; one subject with parallel predicates)
az yek su, khânevâde-hâ khâhân-e khedmât-e bishtar-and; az suy-e digar, shahrdâri bâ kambud-e budje ru-be-ru ast.
On the one hand, families want more services; on the other, the municipality faces a budget shortage. (formal; two stakeholder perspectives)
The coordinator و presents the balance neutrally. اما before the second half makes opposition more explicit: اما از سوی دیگر.... Do not automatically stack both in the same short sentence; choose the relation the reader needs.
Parallelism and agreement
Good parallelism can repeat the same predicate frame, as in کاهش میدهد ... افزایش میدهد, or place two complete propositions side by side. The pair does not require a shared grammatical subject. Each clause keeps its own normal person–number agreement, tense, and valency.
az yek su, ostâdân khâstâr-e zamân-e bishtari hastand; az suy-e digar, dâneshjuyân mi-khâhand natije zud-tar e'lâm shavad.
On the one hand, the professors want more time; on the other, the students want the result announced sooner. (academic setting; each plural subject has its own agreement)
in pishnehâd az yek su amali ast va az suy-e digar bâ moqarrarât-e mowjud sâzgâri dârad.
This proposal is practical on the one hand and compatible with the current regulations on the other. (formal; two complementary favorable assessments)
The last example shows that the pair need not introduce a positive–negative contrast. It can coordinate two independent grounds for the same judgment. What would be incoherent is a second point with no shared decision problem or evaluative frame.
Punctuation in academic prose
When each half is a full clause, place a Persian comma after each framing phrase and a semicolon between the two clauses. With short coordinated predicates under one subject, و is usually enough and internal commas may be unnecessary. Long halves may be separate sentences, provided the paired expressions remain visible.
az yek su, afzâyesh-e zarfiyyat-e towlid zaruri ast. az suy-e digar, har-gune towse'e bâyad bâ mahdudiyyat-hâ-ye zist-mohiti sâzgâr bâshad.
On the one hand, increasing production capacity is necessary. On the other, any development must comply with environmental constraints. (academic; long balanced sentences)
This organization is useful in formal prose, but too many paired balances can make a writer avoid committing to a conclusion. After presenting the two sides, state how they should be weighted. The broader principles are developed on Packaging Information in Formal Prose.
Spoken alternative with طرف
از طرف دیگر is the natural less elevated equivalent. It occurs in conversation, interviews, and neutral explanatory prose. The logic is the same, but طرف sounds less academic than سو.
— az yek taraf del-am mi-khâhad in pishnehâd râ qabul konam; az taraf-e digar, nemi-khâham az Tehrân be-ravam.
— On the one hand, I want to accept this offer; on the other, I don't want to leave Tehran. (neutral conversation; personal conflict)
Do not mix سو and طرف accidentally in edited prose. A mixed pair is understandable, but a matched pair is more polished and preserves the rhetorical symmetry.
Literal location is a different construction
When سو denotes an actual side, it belongs inside an ordinary locative phrase: در یک سوی خیابان “on one side of the street.” There need be no paired argument, and در, not discourse-framing از, identifies location.
dar yek suy-e rudkhâne bâgh-hâ qarâr dârand va dar suy-e digar khâne-hâ-ye qadimi dide mi-shavand.
Gardens lie on one side of the river, and old houses can be seen on the other. (neutral description; literal spatial sides, not a discourse marker)
Common Mistakes
1. Repeating the first frame instead of completing the pair
Incorrect as a balanced pair — the second perspective requires
az yek su hazine kam ast; az suy-e digar, zamân-e ejrâ tulâni ast.
On the one hand, the cost is low; on the other, implementation will take a long time.
2. Omitting از in the second frame
Incorrect — the paired discourse frame repeats the preposition
az yek su tarh sud-âvar ast; az suy-e digar, khatar-e ziyâdi dârad.
On the one hand, the plan is profitable; on the other, it carries considerable risk.
3. Using the discourse frame for physical location
Incorrect for physical ‘on one side of the street’ — locative position requires
ketâbkhâne dar yek suy-e meydân va darmângâh dar suy-e digar-e ân ast.
The library is on one side of the square and the clinic on the other.
4. Leaving one half as an unfinished phrase
Incorrect — the second half is an unfinished object phrase, not a parallel proposition.
az yek su, qeymat pâyin ast; az suy-e digar, keyfiyyat-e mahsul etminân-bakhsh nist.
On the one hand, the price is low; on the other, the product's quality is not reassuring.
Key Takeaways
از سوی دیگر balances two perspectives within one higher-level question.
- سوی in the second frame contains the written linker for ezafe: suy-e digar.
- Parallel clauses improve comparison, but each clause retains its own subject, agreement, tense, and argument structure.
- Use commas after detached frames and a semicolon or full stop between developed propositions.
از طرف دیگر is less elevated and common in speech; literal spatial “side” uses an ordinary locative phrase with در.
