Formal Persian can enumerate reasons with اولاً “firstly” and ثانیاً “secondly,” then close an argument with سرانجام “finally/in conclusion.” The markers do more than count sentences. They promise that the points belong to one argumentative series and invite the reader to compare them in parallel.
Two distinctions matter. First, اولاً، ثانیاً are lexicalized Arabic-derived adverbs whose standard spelling includes tanvin and whose Iranian pronunciation ends in -an, not long -â. Second, سرانجام can mark either the last step in an exposition or the eventual culmination of an event. It is not simply a learned word for “thirdly.”
The formal enumeration system
| Marker | Discourse function | Pronunciation | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| اولاً | introduce the first reason or objection | avvalan | formal, academic, bureaucratic |
| ثانیاً | introduce the second parallel reason or objection | sâniyan | formal, academic, bureaucratic |
| سرانجام | introduce a final conclusion or eventual outcome | saranjâm | neutral-formal; also literary |
| نخست، دوم، در پایان | transparent modern enumeration | nokhost, dovvom, dar pâyân | neutral-formal |
اولا، دادهها کامل نیست؛ ثانیا، روش تحلیل بهروشنی توضیح داده نشده است.
avvalan, dâde-hâ kâmel nist; sâniyan, ravesh-e tahlil be-rowshani towzih dâde na-shode ast.
First, the data are incomplete; second, the method of analysis has not been clearly explained. (academic; two parallel criticisms)
اولا باید نیازهای کاربران را بشناسیم؛ ثانیا باید هزینهی اجرای طرح را برآورد کنیم.
avvalan bâyad niyâz-hâ-ye kârbarân râ be-shnâsim; sâniyan bâyad hazine-ye ejrâ-ye tarh râ bar-âvord konim.
First, we must understand the users' needs; second, we must estimate the cost of implementing the plan. (formal presentation; repeated modal frame)
The repetition of باید + subjunctive in the second example is purposeful. Readers can compare the two obligations immediately because the clauses share a syntactic frame. Enumeration does not require word-for-word identity, but corresponding points should have comparable grammatical status: two clauses, two noun phrases, or two explicit questions.
Tanvin spelling and Iranian pronunciation
The final sign in اولاً، ثانیاً is historically Arabic accusative tanvin. In modern Persian, these are established borrowed adverbs pronounced avvalan and sâniyan. The sign does not introduce productive Arabic case into the surrounding Persian sentence, and speakers do not pronounce the final alef as â.
Standard edited prose normally retains اً in these lexical items. This guide's GrammarExample targets are deliberately unpointed, so they display اولا، ثانیا; their fully marked spokenForm restores the final -an reading. The general spelling and productivity restrictions are explained on Adverbs in اً.
A limited learned series also includes the established forms ثالثاً، رابعاً “thirdly, fourthly.” These too are conventional lexical items, not evidence that Persian speakers freely add tanvin to any numeral. Long Arabic-numbered sequences now sound heavily bureaucratic; in modern analytical prose, سوم اینکه...، چهارم اینکه... or an actual numbered list is easier to scan.
اولا، گزارش دیر رسیده است؛ ثانیا، چند جدول آن منبع ندارد؛ سوم اینکه نتیجهگیری با دادهها سازگار نیست.
avvalan, gozâresh dir reside ast; sâniyan, chand jadval-e ân manba' na-dârad; sevvom in-ke natije-giri bâ dâde-hâ sâzgâr nist.
First, the report arrived late; second, several of its tables lack sources; third, the conclusion is inconsistent with the data. (formal; mixed modern continuation after two established adverbs)
Punctuation makes the hierarchy visible
At the start of a point, a Persian comma normally follows the marker: اولاً، .... When each point is a full clause, a semicolon can separate the larger units. A full stop is preferable when the arguments are long. Do not use a string of commas to carry several syntactically complete, internally complex points.
اولا، بودجهی پیشنهادی واقعبینانه نیست. ثانیا، جدول زمانی هیچ فرصتی برای آزمایش باقی نمیگذارد.
avvalan, budje-ye pishnehâdi vâqe'-binâne nist. sâniyan, jadval-e zamâni hich forsati barâ-ye âzmâyesh bâqi nemi-gozârad.
First, the proposed budget is unrealistic. Second, the schedule leaves no time for testing. (formal written argument; full stops between developed points)
The marker normally scopes over the whole following point. Parenthetical medial use exists—این روش، اولاً، پرهزینه است—but repeated interruptions burden the sentence. Clause-initial placement is the clearest default.
سرانجام as conclusion and as culmination
Argumentative سرانجام introduces a last consideration or conclusion after earlier material. Temporal سرانجام says that an event occurred after delay, difficulty, or a series of attempts. English finally has the same ambiguity, but Persian academic prose often prefers در پایان for a neutral last section and در نهایت for a final synthesis.
سرانجام، این بررسی نشان میدهد که اجرای طرح بدون آموزش کارکنان ممکن نیست.
saranjâm, in barrasi neshân mi-dahad ke ejrâ-ye tarh bedun-e âmuzesh-e kârkonân momken nist.
Finally, this review shows that the plan cannot be implemented without staff training. (academic; closing synthesis)
پس از سه دور مذاکره، دو طرف سرانجام به توافق رسیدند.
pas az se dowr-e mozâkere, do taraf saranjâm be tavâfoq residand.
After three rounds of negotiation, the two sides finally reached an agreement. (formal news register; delayed culmination)
In the first, سرانجام organizes the text. In the second, it modifies the event به توافق رسیدند and implies a path before the result. Do not assume that every third point should begin with سرانجام; if it is simply item three, سوم is more exact.
Modern stylistic alternatives
نخست ... دوم ... در پایان is transparent and less ceremonious. اول ... بعد ... در آخر is natural in conversation and procedural explanation, while اولاً ... ثانیاً can sound argumentative or admonishing in speech.
نخست هدف پژوهش را تعریف میکنیم، سپس روش گردآوری داده را توضیح میدهیم و در پایان نتایج را ارزیابی میکنیم.
nokhost hadaf-e pazhuhesh râ ta'rif mi-konim, sepas ravesh-e gerd-âvari-ye dâde râ towzih mi-dehim va dar pâyân natâyej râ arzyâbi mi-konim.
First we define the research objective, then explain the data-collection method, and finally evaluate the results. (academic; transparent procedural sequence)
— چرا قبول نکردی؟ — اولا وقت ندارم؛ ثانیا، این کار اصلا در حوزهی من نیست.
— cherâ qabul na-kardi? — avvalan vaqt na-dâram; sâniyan, in kâr aslan dar howze-ye man nist.
— Why didn't you accept? — First, I don't have time; second, this isn't even in my field. (careful conversation; emphatic argumentation)
The dialogue is grammatical, but the learned pair makes the answer sound deliberate and forceful. A casual speaker could say اول اینکه وقت ندارم، دوم اینکه... without the same rhetorical weight.
Common Mistakes
1. Writing the pronounced n as a separate letter
❌ اولن، این پیشنهاد هزینهی زیادی دارد.
Incorrect standard spelling — the /n/ of the lexicalized adverb is represented by tanvin, not final ن.
✅ اولا، این پیشنهاد بیش از بودجهی ما هزینه دارد.
avvalan, in pishnehâd bish az budje-ye mâ hazine dârad.
First, this proposal costs more than our budget allows.
2. Pronouncing the final written alef as long â
❌ ثانیا
sâniyâ
Incorrect reading — the established Persian adverb is pronounced sâniyan.
✅ ثانیا، هیچکس مسئولیت این تأخیر را نپذیرفته است.
sâniyan, hich-kas mas'uliyyat-e in ta'khir râ na-pazirofte ast.
Second, no one has accepted responsibility for this delay.
3. Using argumentative markers for a simple chronology
⚠️ اولا از خانه بیرون آمدم، ثانیا سوار اتوبوس شدم.
avvalan az khâne birun âmadam, sâniyan savâr-e otobus shodam.
Grammatical but pragmatically ill-suited to an ordinary chronology — اولاً and ثانیاً frame argumentative points rather than neutral story steps.
✅ اول از خانه بیرون آمدم و بعد سوار اتوبوس شدم.
avval az khâne birun âmadam va ba'd savâr-e otobus shodam.
First I left the house, and then I got on the bus.
4. Breaking syntactic parallelism
❌ اولا، قیمت مناسب است؛ ثانیا، تحویل کالا را.
Incorrect — the second item is an unfinished object phrase rather than a parallel claim.
✅ اولا، قیمت مناسب است؛ ثانیا، فروشنده کالا را همان روز تحویل میدهد.
avvalan, qeymat monâseb ast; sâniyan, forushande kâlâ râ hamân ruz tahvil mi-dahad.
First, the price is reasonable; second, the seller delivers the goods the same day.
Key Takeaways
- اولاً and ثانیاً enumerate parallel argumentative points and are formal or academic in tone.
- Their final اً is pronounced -an; it is part of a lexicalized Persian adverb, not productive Arabic case.
- Use Persian commas after short markers and stronger boundaries between developed clauses.
- سرانجام can close an argument or mark an eventual culmination; it does not automatically mean “thirdly.”
- Transparent نخست، دوم، در پایان and actual numbered lists are often clearer in modern prose.
