Persian به هر حال and در هر صورت both signal that the next claim survives a distraction, objection, or choice among alternatives. Depending on context, English renders them as anyway, in any case, at any rate, or regardless. They are discourse markers: they tell the listener how to return to or preserve the main line of reasoning.
The overlap is substantial, but their centers differ. به هر حال is common in both speech and writing and often manages the conversation itself: it resumes a topic, concedes a complication, or closes discussion. در هر صورت is more characteristically (formal) and emphasizes invariance: whichever relevant possibility becomes true, the conclusion remains the same.
Core meanings and register
| Marker | Central contribution | Typical position | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| به هر حال | return to the main line after a digression | detached at clause beginning | neutral; frequent in conversation |
| به هر حال | concede a problem but maintain a decision | after the conceded material | neutral/formal |
| در هر صورت | same result under all relevant alternatives | before the invariant conclusion | formal/administrative |
| خلاصه | sum up or bring a long account to a close | turn-initial | neutral/informal |
بحث از موضوع اصلی دور شد؛ به هر حال، باید تا امروز دربارهی بودجه تصمیم بگیریم.
bahs az mowzu'-e asli dur shod; be har hâl, bâyad tâ emruz darbâre-ye budje tasmim be-girim.
The discussion has drifted from the main subject; anyway, we must decide on the budget today. (neutral-formal; return to main line)
ممکن است قطار تأخیر داشته باشد؛ در هر صورت باید ساعت هشت در ایستگاه باشیم.
momken ast qatâr ta'khir dâshte bâshad; dar har surat bâyad sâ'at-e hasht dar istgâh bâshim.
The train may be delayed; in any case, we must be at the station at eight. (formal-neutral; plan unchanged across possibilities)
Returning after a digression
Speakers use به هر حال to acknowledge that intervening material has been relevant but is not the present point. It resembles English anyway when that word means “back to what I was saying,” not when it is merely a filler.
دربارهی محل جلسه بعدا صحبت میکنیم. به هر حال، موضوع امروز انتخاب مسئول پروژه است.
darbâre-ye mahall-e jalase ba'dan sohbat mi-konim. be har hâl, mowzu'-e emruz entekhâb-e mas'ul-e porozhe ast.
We can discuss the meeting place later. Anyway, today's topic is choosing the project manager. (neutral meeting speech; resumption)
— راستی، علی هم میآید؟ — هنوز معلوم نیست. به هر حال، ساعت شش جلوی سینما میبینمت.
— râsti, Ali ham mi-âyad? — hanuz ma'lum nist. be har hâl, sâ'at-e shesh jelow-ye sinemâ mi-binam-at.
— By the way, is Ali coming too? — We don't know yet. Anyway, I'll see you in front of the cinema at six. (neutral conversation; return to the arrangement)
In speech, the marker usually forms its own intonation unit, followed by a short pause. A calm reset invites cooperation. Heavy stress and a sharp falling contour can imply “enough discussion; this is settled,” so the same words can sound dismissive if used to cut another speaker off.
Concession without surrendering the conclusion
Both expressions can follow a drawback and mean “despite that, the following still holds.” The concessive relation comes from the discourse: the marker does not itself introduce a finite subordinate clause like اگرچه “although.”
هزینه بیشتر از انتظار شد؛ به هر حال، تعمیر فوری ساختمان ضروری بود.
hazine bishtar az entezâr shod; be har hâl, ta'mir-e fowri-ye sâkhtemân zaruri bud.
The cost was higher than expected; even so, repairing the building immediately was necessary. (formal; conceded drawback)
شاید همه با پیشنهاد موافق نباشند، اما در هر صورت باید نظرشان را بشنویم.
shâyad hame bâ pishnehâd movâfeq na-bâshand, ammâ dar har surat bâyad nazar-eshân râ be-shnavim.
Not everyone may agree with the proposal, but in any case we must hear their views. (formal; obligation survives possible disagreement)
For the internal grammar of clauses introduced by اگرچه، هرچند and related items, see Concession with اگرچه and هرچند. به هر حال and در هر صورت stand outside that subordinate-clause structure and comment on the transition to the main assertion.
Invariance across alternatives
در هر صورت is especially natural when alternatives are stated or easily recoverable. The alternatives may concern time, cause, choice, or outcome; the following plan or conclusion is constant across them.
چه درخواست امروز تأیید شود چه فردا، در هر صورت کار را از شنبه آغاز میکنیم.
che darkhâst emruz ta'yid shavad che fardâ, dar har surat kâr râ az shanbe âghâz mi-konim.
Whether the request is approved today or tomorrow, in either case we will start work on Saturday. (formal; explicit alternatives and invariant plan)
ممکن است پاسخ مثبت یا منفی باشد؛ در هر صورت نتیجه را کتبی اعلام میکنیم.
momken ast pâsokh mosbat yâ manfi bâshad; dar har surat natije râ ketbi e'lâm mi-konim.
The answer may be positive or negative; either way, we will announce the result in writing. (administrative; procedure unchanged)
This is why در هر صورت fits regulations, notices, and reasoned argument particularly well. به هر حال could replace it in both examples, but would sound more like the speaker is closing the discussion than formally quantifying over the alternatives.
Decision closure
Turn-initial به هر حال can announce that deliberation has ended. The decision may follow conflicting evidence rather than logically follow from it. The marker says that, after considering everything, the speaker is moving forward.
هنوز قیمت نهایی را نمیدانم؛ به هر حال، امشب بلیت را میخرم.
hanuz qeymat-e nehâyi râ nemi-dânam; be har hâl, emshab belit râ mi-kharam.
I still don't know the final price; anyway, I'll buy the ticket tonight. (neutral conversation; decision closure)
خلاصه (neutral/informal) can also close a long account, but it presents a summary rather than necessarily preserving a conclusion across objections. سرانجام means “finally/eventually” and locates a culmination in time; it is not a general substitute for discourse-managing “anyway.”
Position and scope
Initial detached position is clearest: به هر حال، P and در هر صورت، P. They can also follow a coordinator—اما به هر حال، P—when the concession is explicit. Medial placement is possible, but the markers normally scope over a proposition, not a single noun.
این تصمیم، در هر صورت، باید به تصویب هیئت برسد.
in tasmim, dar har surat, bâyad be tasvib-e hey'at be-resad.
This decision must, in any event, be approved by the board. (formal; parenthetical sentence scope)
In edited prose, commas make parenthetical scope visible. In conversation, pauses and pitch reset perform the same job. Do not attach either marker to a noun with ezafe as if it were an adjective.
Common Mistakes
1. Turning به هر حال into a که-conjunction
❌ به هر حال که باران میبارد، میرویم.
Incorrect — به هر حال does not introduce a subordinate clause with که.
✅ اگرچه باران میبارد، به هر حال میرویم.
agar-che bârân mi-bârad, be har hâl mi-ravim.
Although it is raining, we are going anyway.
2. Dropping the first preposition
❌ هر صورت، پاسخ را فردا میفرستیم.
Incorrect — the fixed formal marker is در هر صورت.
✅ در هر صورت، پاسخ کامل را فردا میفرستیم.
dar har surat, pâsokh-e kâmel râ fardâ mi-ferestim.
In any case, we will send the full answer tomorrow.
3. Giving the marker a noun complement
❌ در هر صورت
dar har surat-e ta'khir
Incorrect expansion for ‘in case of delay’ — the discourse marker does not take an ezafe complement.
✅ در صورت تأخیر، با شما تماس میگیریم.
dar surat-e ta'khir, bâ shomâ tamâs mi-girim.
In case of a delay, we will contact you.
4. Using “anyway” for physical means
❌ به هر حال به فرودگاه برو.
Incorrect for ‘go to the airport by any means’ — به هر حال comments on the decision, not the vehicle or route.
✅ با هر وسیلهای که میتوانی خودت را به فرودگاه برسان.
bâ har vasile-i ke mi-tavâni khod-at râ be forudgâh be-resân.
Get yourself to the airport by any means you can.
Key Takeaways
- به هر حال returns to the main line, concedes a complication, or closes a decision; it is natural in speech and writing.
- در هر صورت emphasizes that a conclusion or procedure holds under every relevant alternative and is more formal on average.
- Detached initial position and a short pause give either marker clear scope over the following proposition.
- Neither expression is a subordinate conjunction or a prepositional frame taking an ezafe complement.
- Intonation matters: a calm به هر حال resumes cooperatively; heavy falling stress can sound dismissive.
