Degree and Manner Words

Persian often uses the same visible word as an adjective and as an adverb. خوب can describe a “good” person or say that someone did something “well”; سریع can describe a “fast” train or say that it moved “quickly.” There is no English-style -ly ending. Position and grammatical function tell you whether the word modifies a noun, a quality, or an action.

Two jobs: degree and manner

WordCore meaningTypical patternRegister
خیلیvery; very muchbefore a quality or action phraseneutral; extremely common in speech
کمیa little; somewhatbefore a quality or manner wordneutral standard
خوبwell; goodbefore the verb as manner, after a noun through ezâfe as adjectiveall registers
بدbadly; badbefore the verb as manner, after a noun through ezâfe as adjectiveall registers
سریعquickly; fastbefore the verb as manner, after a noun as adjectiveall registers

Degree words answer “to what extent?” Manner words answer “how?” In خیلی خوب توضیح داد “explained very well,” خیلی gives the degree of خوب, while the complete phrase خیلی خوب describes the manner of explaining.

پزشک نتیجه‌ی آزمایش را خیلی خوب توضیح داد.

pezeshk natije-ye âzmâyesh râ kheyli khub towzih dâd.

The doctor explained the test result very well. (neutral standard)

اتاق کمی سرد است؛ پنجره را ببند.

otâq kami sard ast; panjare râ be-band.

The room is a little cold; close the window. (neutral standard)

💡
Build the phrase from the inside out: خوب توضیح داد “explained well,” then خیلی خوب توضیح داد “explained very well.” The degree word stands immediately before the quality it scales.

Degree words come before what they scale

خیلی intensifies an adjective, an adverbial quality, or certain verbs and predicates. کمی lowers the degree without making it zero.

این مسیر خیلی طولانی است.

in masir kheyli tulâni ast.

This route is very long. (خیلی modifies an adjective)

لطفا کمی آهسته‌تر صحبت کنید.

lotfan kami âheste-tar sohbat konid.

Please speak a little more slowly. (polite standard)

خواهرم موسیقی محلی خراسان را خیلی دوست دارد.

khâhar-am musiqi-ye mahalli-ye Khorâsân râ kheyli dust dârad.

My sister likes the folk music of Khorasan very much. (neutral standard)

In the last sentence, خیلی modifies the degree of the predicate دوست داشتن. English places “very much” after “like,” but Persian naturally places خیلی before the compound predicate. This is a frequent transfer point.

کمی is a polite softener as well as a degree word. کمی صبر کنید sounds less abrupt than a bare command, though it still means “wait a little,” not “wait politely.”

کمی صبر کنید؛ مسئول پذیرش الان می‌آید.

kami sabr konid; mas'ul-e paziresh alân mi-âyad.

Please wait a little; the receptionist is coming now. (polite standard)

The conversational form یکم “a little” is common in (informal: Tehran) speech. Use standard کمی in careful speech and writing unless the page or dialogue intentionally represents colloquial language.

One form can be adjective or adverb

Persian does not normally derive an adverb from an adjective by adding a special ending. Compare noun modification with verb modification:

FunctionPatternInterpretation
adjectiveعکس خوبa good photo; خوب follows the noun through ezâfe
manner adverbخوب عکس گرفتtook the photo well; خوب belongs to the predicate
adjectiveقطار سریعa fast train
manner adverbسریع حرکت کردmoved quickly

ندا عکاس خوبی است و در نور کم هم خوب عکس می‌گیرد.

Nedâ akkâs-e khubi ast va dar nur-e kam ham khub aks mi-girad.

Neda is a good photographer and takes good photos even in low light. (neutral standard)

The first خوبی belongs inside the noun phrase عکاس خوبی “a good photographer.” The second خوب modifies عکس می‌گیرد “takes photos.” The adjective–adverb distinction is syntactic, not visible in the word’s shape.

این قطار سریع است، اما امروز خیلی آهسته حرکت می‌کند.

in qatâr sari' ast, ammâ emruz kheyli âheste harekat mi-konad.

This train is fast, but today it is moving very slowly. (neutral standard)

Being a fast train is a classification; moving slowly today describes one event. English marks this contrast partly through “fast” versus “slowly.” Persian relies on position and meaning.

Manner normally stays near the predicate

A manner expression usually comes after the object and before the verb. The neutral pattern is subject + object + manner + verb.

مهدی پیام را سریع فرستاد و از خانه بیرون رفت.

Mahdi payâm râ sari' ferestâd va az khâne birun raft.

Mehdi sent the message quickly and left the house. (neutral standard)

صدایم را بد ضبط کرده‌اند؛ دوباره می‌خوانم.

sedâ-yam râ bad zabt karde-and; dobâre mi-khânam.

They recorded my voice badly; I’ll read it again. (neutral standard)

Moving سریع to the beginning can give it broader focus—“quickly, before anything else”—but beginners should keep manner near the verb. A clause-final manner word often sounds like an afterthought rather than neutral written Persian.

Do not treat سریع “quickly/fast” and زود “early/soon” as automatic equivalents. سریع primarily describes speed or rapid completion, while زود places an event before an expected time. In some contexts سریع‌تر can be understood as “sooner,” but زودتر is the unambiguous choice for clock time.

تاکسی در بزرگراه سریع حرکت کرد و من زود به ایستگاه رسیدم.

tâksi dar bozorg-râh sari' harekat kard va man zud be istgâh residam.

The taxi moved quickly on the highway, and I reached the station early. (neutral standard)

Focus changes with grouping

In خیلی خوب خواند, the most natural grouping is [خیلی خوب] [خواند]: “read very well.” If خیلی is intended to quantify a noun, Persian needs an appropriate quantifier construction; simply placing it before any noun is not a universal equivalent of English “many.” That distinction belongs to much and many.

گزارش را خیلی دقیق خواندی، ولی سؤال آخر را بد فهمیدی.

gozâresh râ kheyli daqiq khândi, vali so'âl-e âkhar râ bad fahmidi.

You read the report very carefully, but misunderstood the last question. (neutral standard)

A short everyday exchange

غذا چطور بود؟

ghazâ chetowr bud?

How was the food? (neutral spoken)

خیلی خوب بود، فقط کمی شور بود.

kheyli khub bud, faqat kami shur bud.

It was very good, just a little salty. (neutral spoken)

An (informal: Tehran) reply might be خیلی خوبه، فقط یکم شوره. Those spellings represent colloquial pronunciation; standard writing retains است، کمی.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English “very much” order

⚠️ موسیقی سنتی را دوست دارم، خیلی.

musiqi-ye sonnati râ dust dâram, kheyli.

Possible as a detached conversational afterthought, but not the neutral order for a plain statement.

✅ موسیقی سنتی را خیلی دوست دارم.

musiqi-ye sonnati râ kheyli dust dâram.

I like traditional music very much.

2. Adding an English-style adverb ending

❌ او سریعاگونه جواب داد.

Incorrect — Persian does not create the ordinary adverb ‘quickly’ by attaching a calque of English -ly.

✅ او سریع و روشن جواب داد.

u sari' o rowshan javâb dâd.

He/She answered quickly and clearly.

3. Confusing سریع with زود

⚠️ جلسه سریع‌تر از ساعت مقرر شروع شد.

jalase sari'-tar az sâ'at-e moqarrar shoru' shod.

Understandable, and سریع‌تر can sometimes mean ‘sooner,’ but زودتر is the clear idiomatic choice for ‘earlier than the scheduled time.’

✅ جلسه زودتر از ساعت مقرر شروع شد.

jalase zud-tar az sâ'at-e moqarrar shoru' shod.

The meeting started earlier than scheduled.

4. Putting manner after the verb by default

⚠️ فرم را پر کردم، بد.

form râ por kardam, bad.

Grammatical as a detached correction or afterthought, but not neutral manner placement.

✅ فرم را بد پر کردم و باید دوباره بنویسم.

form râ bad por kardam va bâyad dobâre be-nevisam.

I filled out the form badly and have to write it again.

Key Takeaways

  • خیلی and کمی stand before the quality or predicate whose degree they change.
  • خوب، بد, and سریع can be adjectives or adverbs without changing form.
  • Noun position and ezâfe create an adjective reading; position near the predicate creates a manner reading.
  • Neutral manner order is normally object + manner + verb.
  • Use سریع for speed and زود for an early time.
