Persian place words can answer both where? and where to? اینجا means “here,” but it can describe a location in اینجا هستم or a destination in اینجا بیا. The word itself does not have to change: the verb and any added preposition determine whether the clause describes position, movement toward a goal, or movement away from a source.
The core place words
| Persian | Location | Direction | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| اینجا | here | to here with a motion verb | all registers |
| آنجا | there | to there with a motion verb | neutral standard |
| بالا | upstairs; above | upward | all registers |
| پایین | downstairs; below | downward | all registers |
| بیرون | outside | outward | all registers |
English often changes “here” to “to here,” “outside” to “out,” or “upstairs” to “up.” Persian frequently keeps one form and lets the predicate supply the contrast.
من امروز اینجا کار میکنم.
man emruz injâ kâr mi-konam.
I’m working here today. (location; neutral standard)
این صندلی را اینجا بگذار.
in sandali râ injâ be-gozâr.
Put this chair here. (destination; neutral spoken)
Location versus destination
With بودن، ماندن، نشستن, and similar predicates, the place word locates someone or something. With آمدن، رفتن، بردن، گذاشتن, it can name the destination.
بچهها بیرون هستند و در حیاط بازی میکنند.
bachche-hâ birun hastand va dar hayât bâzi mi-konand.
The children are outside, playing in the yard. (location; neutral standard)
بچهها بعد از ناهار بیرون رفتند.
bachche-hâ ba'd az nâhâr birun raftand.
The children went outside after lunch. (outward motion; neutral standard)
مهسا بالاست و اتاقش را مرتب میکند.
Mahsâ bâlâ-st va otâq-ash râ morattab mi-konad.
Mahsa is upstairs, tidying her room. (location; neutral spoken)
لطفا بالا بیا؛ چمدان خیلی سنگین است.
lotfan bâlâ biyâ; chamedân kheyli sangin ast.
Please come upstairs; the suitcase is very heavy. (direction; neutral spoken)
No extra به is required in بالا بیا or اینجا بگذار. Adding it can be possible when the goal is contrastive or elaborated, but English “to” does not force Persian به.
Movement away takes از
When the clause names a source, از makes the relation explicit: از اینجا “from here,” از آنجا “from there,” and از بیرون “from outside.” Compare bare destination اینجا بیا with source از اینجا برو.
از اینجا تا ایستگاه ده دقیقه پیاده راه است.
az injâ tâ istgâh dah daqiqe piyâde râh ast.
It is a ten-minute walk from here to the station. (neutral standard)
دود از پایین میآید؛ شاید چیزی سوخته است.
dud az pâyin mi-âyad; shâyad chizi sukhte ast.
Smoke is coming from downstairs; perhaps something has burned. (source; neutral standard)
The full path can contain source, route, and goal:
از بیرون به داخل آمد و در را پشت سرش بست.
az birun be dâkhel âmad va dar râ posht-e sar-ash bast.
He/She came in from outside and closed the door behind them. (neutral standard)
For the wider contrast between source, location, and goal, see movement versus location.
Expand the place with a reference point
Bare بالا، پایین, and بیرون depend on the conversational setting. To name the reference point, Persian uses an ezâfe phrase or a preposition.
| Bare place | Expanded phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| بالا | بالای پل | above/on top of the bridge |
| پایین | پایین پلهها | at the bottom of the stairs |
| بیرون | بیرون از ساختمان | outside the building |
| آنجا | از آنجا، تا آنجا، به آنجا | from there, as far as there, to there |
Because بالا ends in a vowel, visible ی carries ezâfe: بالای پل bâlâ-ye pol. پایین ends in a consonant, so its ezâfe is heard but not written: پایین پلهها pâyin-e pelle-hâ. These relational patterns are developed on spatial nouns with ezâfe.
بالای تپه یک کافهی کوچک هست.
bâlâ-ye tappe yek kâfe-ye kuchek hast.
There is a small café at the top of the hill. (neutral standard)
پایین پلهها منتظر بمان؛ الان میرسم.
pâyin-e pelle-hâ montazer be-mân; alân mi-rasam.
Wait at the bottom of the stairs; I’ll be there soon. (neutral spoken)
لطفا کفشهای خیس را بیرون از اتاق بگذار.
lotfan kafsh-hâ-ye khis râ birun az otâq be-gozâr.
Please put the wet shoes outside the room. (neutral spoken)
Clause position and focus
A place expression often occurs before the predicate: من اینجا میمانم. Moving it to the beginning creates a place frame or contrast: اینجا پارک نکن means “Don’t park here,” often contrasting this spot with somewhere else.
اینجا نمیتوانی توقف کنی؛ آنجا جای خالی هست.
injâ nemi-tavâni tavaqqof koni; ânjâ jâ-ye khâli hast.
You can’t stop here; there is an empty space over there. (neutral spoken; contrastive places)
Standard آنجا becomes اونجا in (informal: Tehran) speech. That spelling belongs in dialogue and messages, not neutral formal prose. در اینجا is possible in formal exposition—“at this point/here”—but physical conversation usually prefers bare اینجا.
A short everyday exchange
کجایی؟ همه پایین منتظرند.
kojâ-yi? hame pâyin montazer-and.
Where are you? Everyone is waiting downstairs. (neutral spoken)
هنوز بالا هستم؛ دو دقیقهی دیگر میآیم.
hanuz bâlâ hastam; do daqiqe-ye digar mi-âyam.
I’m still upstairs; I’ll come down in two minutes. (neutral spoken)
In the reply, بالا هستم is a location. The destination “down” is recoverable from the other speaker’s پایین, so Persian can simply say میآیم “I’m coming.” Direction need not be repeated when context supplies it.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding به before every destination
⚠️ این جعبه را به اینجا بگذار.
in ja'be râ be injâ be-gozâr.
Grammatical when the goal is explicitly contrastive, but heavier than neutral bare اینجا; English ‘to’ alone does not require به.
✅ این جعبه را همینجا بگذار.
in ja'be râ hamin-jâ be-gozâr.
Put this box right here.
2. Using آنجا as a demonstrative before a noun
⚠️ آنجا کتاب را از قفسه بردار.
ânjâ ketâb râ az qafase bar-dâr.
Grammatical with آنجا as the place frame ‘there’; wrong only if آنجا is intended to mean ‘that’ before کتاب.
✅ آن کتاب را از قفسهی بالا بردار.
ân ketâb râ az qafase-ye bâlâ bar-dâr.
Take that book from the top shelf.
3. Omitting visible ezâfe after بالا
❌ بالا ساختمان یک آنتن هست.
Incorrect — vowel-final بالا needs written ی before its reference point.
✅ بالای ساختمان یک آنتن بزرگ هست.
bâlâ-ye sâkhtemân yek ânten-e bozorg hast.
There is a large antenna on top of the building.
4. Reversing source and outward direction
⚠️ از بیرون خانه رفتم.
az birun-e khâne raftam.
Grammatical as ‘I left from outside the house,’ but not ‘I went out of the house’: بیرونِ خانه names the starting location.
✅ از خانه بیرون رفتم تا کمی هوا بخورم.
az khâne birun raftam tâ kami havâ be-khoram.
I went out of the house to get some air.
5. Using formal در اینجا in every conversation
⚠️ من در اینجا منتظر تو هستم.
man dar injâ montazer-e to hastam.
Grammatical, but needlessly formal or contrastive for an ordinary ‘I’m waiting here.’
✅ من اینجا منتظرت هستم.
man injâ montazer-at hastam.
I’m waiting for you here. (neutral spoken)
Key Takeaways
- اینجا، آنجا، بالا، پایین, and بیرون can express location or direction; the verb decides.
- Bare destinations are natural: اینجا بیا، بالا برو، بیرون برو.
- Use از for a source: از اینجا، از پایین، از خانه بیرون.
- Add a reference point with ezâfe or a preposition: بالای پل، پایین پلهها، بیرون از اتاق.
- Place expressions normally precede the predicate and can move clause-initially for contrast.
