Catalan forms many nouns by adding a suffix to a verb, adjective, or noun: informar → informació, pagar → pagament, igual → igualtat, bell → bellesa, llibre → llibreria, assecar → assecador. These families make unfamiliar vocabulary easier to decode, but a suffix is not a machine that accepts every imaginable base.
The choice among -ció, -ment, -tat, -esa, -eria, and -dor/-dora affects meaning, gender, stress, and sometimes the shape of the base. Productive rules coexist with stored words: Catalan speakers know not only what a new form could mean, but which form their community actually uses.
Overview: base, result, and gender
| Suffix | Typical base and meaning | Usual gender | Example family |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ció | verb → action, process, or result | feminine | informar → informa-ció → informació |
| -ment | verb → action, process, state, or result | masculine | pagar → paga-ment → pagament |
| -tat / -itat | adjective → abstract quality or condition | feminine | igual → igual-tat → igualtat |
| -esa | adjective → quality or state | feminine | bell → bell-esa → bellesa |
| -eria | noun → shop, workshop, trade; also behavior/thing | feminine | llibre → llibr-eria → llibreria |
| -dor/-dora | verb → agent, instrument, or device | variable | assecar → asseca-dor → assecador |
“Usual gender” describes the resulting noun, not a general property of the written ending in every unrelated word. A new noun takes articles, adjectives, and pronouns according to its lexical gender: la informació completa, un pagament ajornat, aquesta bellesa inesperada.
-ció: action, process, and institutional result
Nouns in -ció are feminine and normally carry final stress, marked by the acute accent: informació, organització, protecció, decisió. They are common in neutral, formal, and academic registers.
La inscripció al curs inclou l'accés a tots els materials.
Enrollment in the course includes access to all the materials.
L'organització publicarà la decisió definitiva dilluns.
The organization will publish the final decision on Monday. (formal)
The spelling -ció is stable, but the stem is not always the bare infinitive minus -ar/-er/-ir. Compare organitzar → organització, where tz remains, with decidir → decisió and protegir → protecció. Historical stem alternations make some families partly lexical. There is no reliable operation “remove the infinitive ending and add -ció” for every verb; Allomorphy in Word Formation explains why one base can surface in more than one shape.
English -tion often corresponds to Catalan -ció, but not automatically. “Development” is desenvolupament, not an invented desenvolupació in the ordinary general sense; “performance” may be rendiment, actuació, or funcionament depending on context. Meaning chooses the noun before morphology confirms it.
-ment: processes and their outcomes
Nouns in -ment are generally masculine: el pagament, el funcionament, el naixement, el coneixement. They often name an event, process, state, or result associated with a verb.
El pagament s'ha de fer abans del dia quinze.
Payment must be made before the fifteenth.
Ningú no ens havia explicat el funcionament de la màquina.
Nobody had explained to us how the machine worked.
Many formations are transparent (allotjar → allotjament, aparcar → aparcament), while others contain a conventional stem (néixer → naixement, conèixer → coneixement, moure → moviment). Forms such as coneixment omit material that the established noun requires; logical compression is not Catalan morphology.
Competition with -ció is lexical and semantic. Acabament can name an ending or finishing element, whereas finalització emphasizes the action of bringing something to completion and is common in formal administrative language. Neither suffix is a universal “more correct” version of the other.
-tat / -itat: abstract qualities
-tat and its frequent extended form -itat create feminine abstract nouns from adjectives: igual → igualtat, lleial → lleialtat, possible → possibilitat, estable → estabilitat. Stress falls at the end.
La igualtat legal no garanteix tota sola la igualtat real.
Legal equality does not by itself guarantee real equality. (formal)
Valorem la possibilitat de treballar des de casa dos dies per setmana.
We are considering the possibility of working from home two days a week.
The alternation is not freely chosen for style. It belongs to established families. Catalan says seguretat from segur, bondat from bo, and claredat from clar. A learner cannot safely predict every intervening consonant or vowel from the English abstract noun.
These nouns behave syntactically like other mass or count abstracts depending on sense: la seguretat as a general quality, but les mesures de seguretat in a concrete institutional context. The suffix creates a noun; it does not freeze number or article use.
-esa: qualities with Catalan s
-esa forms feminine quality nouns, especially from adjectives: bell → bellesa, ric → riquesa, trist → tristesa, pobre → pobresa. Stress normally falls on the penultimate syllable and no written accent is needed in these examples.
La bellesa del paisatge no ens va fer oblidar la duresa del camí.
The beauty of the landscape did not make us forget the harshness of the path.
La pobresa energètica afecta moltes llars durant l'hivern.
Energy poverty affects many households during the winter. (formal)
Spanish influence can produce misspellings in -eza. Standard Catalan has bellesa, riquesa, tristesa, with s. Also distinguish the suffix from -essa in certain feminine personal nouns or titles; similarity in sound does not make them one productive pattern.
-eria: places, trades, products, and behavior
-eria is productive in names of shops, workshops, and commercial activities: llibreria “bookshop,” sabateria “shoe shop,” papereria “stationery shop,” gelateria “ice-cream shop,” fusteria “carpentry workshop/trade.” It also appears in nouns such as ximpleria “silly thing/behavior” and porqueria “filth, rubbish, nasty thing.” All of these are feminine.
La llibreria del barri també té una petita secció de papereria al fons.
The neighborhood bookshop also has a small stationery section at the back.
The suffix does not replace the entire retail lexicon. A bakery is normally fleca, not a transparent coinage built from the word for bread; a butcher's is carnisseria, which uses the established occupational stem carnisser. You must verify the conventional base.
Stress shifts into the suffixal area: llibre → llibreria. Written forms are joined, never llibre-eria. Stem spelling may adjust, and lexical history may obscure the neat segmentation shown for teaching.
-dor / -dora: people and instruments
From verbs, -dor can name an agent or an instrument: treballar → treballador, investigar → investigador, assecar → assecador, obrir → obridor. A female human referent normally takes -dora: investigadora, treballadora. Devices have lexical gender: un ordinador, un assecador, but una rentadora.
La investigadora ha deixat l'ordinador al costat de la impressora.
The researcher left the computer next to the printer.
Necessitem un obridor; aquesta ampolla no té tap de rosca.
We need a bottle opener; this bottle doesn't have a screw cap.
The suffix does not guarantee that the derived noun is the ordinary occupational term. Catalan uses forner/fornera for a baker and fuster/fustera for a carpenter. A logically possible fabricador exists in certain technical or agentive contexts, but fabricant is often the conventional noun for a manufacturer. Productivity is constrained by competition from -er/-era, -aire, -ant and stored vocabulary.
Spelling and stress contrasts
| Base | Derived noun | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| organitzar | organització | final stressed -ció; tz retained |
| néixer | naixement | conventional allomorphic stem |
| possible | possibilitat | stem extension before -itat |
| ric | riquesa | c → qu preserves the /k/ sound |
| llibre | llibreria | suffix receives the main stress |
| assecar | assecador | final stress in masculine -dor |
Suffixes are written as part of the word. Hyphens are analytical notation only: informa-ció displays the pieces, while informació is the actual spelling. Accent marks follow the complete word: final stressed -ció always shows its accent, whereas the regular penultimate stress of bellesa does not.
A realistic exchange
—Ja has fet la inscripció? —Sí, però el pagament ha fallat. —Truca a administració; la treballadora que porta les matriculacions ho podrà revisar. —D'acord. Guardaré també la confirmació que m'han enviat.
—Have you enrolled yet? —Yes, but the payment failed. —Call administration; the employee who handles enrollments will be able to check it. —All right. I'll also keep the confirmation they sent me.
This exchange shows why near-synonymous suffixes are not interchangeable. Inscripció, administració, matriculació, and confirmació are conventional -ció nouns; pagament is the normal noun paired with pagar; treballadora names the human agent. An invented form might be understandable and still fail to be idiomatic.

Key Takeaways
- -ció nouns are feminine and final-stressed; -ment nouns are usually masculine, but the choice between them is lexical.
- -tat/-itat and -esa commonly form feminine abstract nouns from adjectives: igualtat, possibilitat, bellesa.
- -eria forms many shop, trade, and behavior nouns, but established vocabulary decides the base and whether the coinage is natural.
- -dor/-dora can name agents and instruments; human gender alternates, while a device has fixed lexical gender.
- Stress shifts and stem alternations are real: néixer—naixement, ric—riquesa, llibre—llibreria.
- English and Spanish cognates are clues, not rules. Verify the conventional Catalan derivative and write every suffix directly joined to its base.
