A prefix precedes a base and changes its meaning: fer “do” → desfer “undo,” llegir “read” → rellegir “reread,” possible → impossible. This looks transparent, but productive word formation is not a license to coin anything that seems logically possible. Catalan speakers combine structural rules with a lexicon of established words and editorial spelling conventions.
This page focuses on re-, des-, negative in-, pre-, post-, sobre-, sub-, and auto-. It shows how their meanings scope over a base, what happens at letter boundaries, and when a prefix is joined, spaced, or hyphenated.
The working pattern
| Prefix | Frequent meaning | Segmented family | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| re- | again; anew | llegir → re-llegir → rellegir | not every word beginning in re- is “again” |
| des- | reversal, removal, negation | fer → des-fer → desfer | the result may be lexicalized |
| in- | negative “not” | possible → im-possible → impossible | form assimilates; distribution is lexical |
| pre- / post- | before / after | operatori → preoperatori / postoperatori | temporal relation must be conventional |
| sobre- / sub- | over, excessive / under, subordinate | carregar → sobrecarregar; estimar → subestimar | literal and degree meanings coexist |
| auto- | self, by oneself | avaluació → autoavaluació | auto can instead mean “car” in compounds |
Prefixes normally do not determine the grammatical behavior of the result by themselves. Possible and impossible are both adjectives and agree with the noun; fer, desfer, and refer are verbs and conjugate according to their actual lexical pattern. A prefix may be productive, but the completed word still has to be learned and used in an attested sense.
re-: again, not merely the letters re
Productive re- asks for a repetition or restoration of an event: reobrir “reopen,” reescriure “rewrite,” rellegir “reread,” reordenar “reorder.” It attaches directly to the base.
He rellegit el missatge i ara entenc per què estava enfadada.
I reread the message and now I understand why she was angry.
L'ajuntament reobrirà la biblioteca dilluns vinent.
The city council will reopen the library next Monday.
The boundary can produce two adjacent vowels (reobrir, reescriure) or ll (rellegir). Do not insert a hyphen merely to display the analysis. The notation re-llegir is useful when explaining morphology, but the ordinary written word is rellegir.
Some words only appear to contain productive re-. Recerca means “research”; it is not normally interpreted compositionally as “search again.” Recepta is not re- plus an independent cepta. These lexicalized forms demonstrate why spelling alone cannot prove an active derivation.
des-: undoing, removing, or lacking
With verbs, des- frequently reverses an action or removes its result: fer → desfer, connectar → desconnectar, muntar → desmuntar, bloquejar → desbloquejar. With adjectives and nouns, it can mark absence or opposition: lleial → deslleial, acord → desacord.
Abans de moure l'armari, desconnecta el llum de la paret.
Before moving the cupboard, disconnect the lamp from the wall.
El comitè va expressar el seu desacord amb la proposta.
The committee expressed its disagreement with the proposal. (formal)
The meaning is not always a perfect logical opposite. Despertar is an established verb “wake (up),” not a freely transparent derivation that learners can reproduce from a current base pertar. Despatx begins with the same letters but is unrelated to productive des-. Segment words only when both the base and the derived relation are alive for speakers.
Negative in- and assimilation
Negative in- is common with learned or Latinate adjectives. Its final consonant adapts in spelling to the following sound:
| Environment | Form | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| most consonants and vowels | in- | inexacte, innecessari, insegur |
| before p, b, m | im- | impossible, imbatible, immadur |
| before r | ir- | irregular, irresponsable |
| before l | il- | il·legal, il·lògic, il·legible |
És il·legal publicar aquestes dades sense autorització.
It is illegal to publish these data without authorization.
Before a base beginning in l, the allomorph is il-; joining it to legal produces the written boundary l·l in il·legal. The middle dot is not decorative: it distinguishes that geminate from the digraph ll. Likewise, immadur has mm, and irresponsable has rr. The pronunciation and spelling adjustment is systematic, but lexical choice remains restricted. Do not attach in- to any adjective simply because English permits un-.
pre- and post-: locating an event in time
Pre- marks priority: preinscripció happens before definitive enrollment, preelectoral precedes an election, and preoperatori precedes an operation. Post- marks what follows: postoperatori, postgrau, postguerra.
El període de preinscripció s'acaba divendres a les dues.
The pre-enrollment period ends on Friday at two.
Després del postoperatori, haurà de fer rehabilitació durant sis setmanes.
After the postoperative period, she will need rehabilitation for six weeks.
Catalan standard spelling retains post- in these words; do not replace it automatically with Spanish pos-. The t may be weak or absent in some pronunciations, but the written form remains postguerra, postoperatori. Prefix and base are joined in ordinary common words.
sobre- and sub-: space, hierarchy, and degree
Sobre- can be spatial (sobrevolar “fly over”), hierarchical, or excessive (sobrecarregar “overload,” sobreprotecció “overprotection”). Sub- can mean “under/below” (subsol, submarí), subordinate (subdirector), or insufficiently low on a scale (subestimar “underestimate”).
No sobrecarreguis la presentació amb gràfics que no comentaràs.
Don't overload the presentation with charts you aren't going to discuss.
Vam subestimar el temps que calia per revisar totes les dades.
We underestimated the time needed to review all the data.
Scope matters. No van sobrevalorar el projecte may mean “They did not overvalue the project,” where negation scopes over the prefixed verb. It does not necessarily assert that they undervalued it. Morphological opposites do not make every sentence logically binary.
Sobretot “especially/above all” is lexicalized and should be learned as a whole. It is not a model for freely attaching sobre- to any pronoun. Similarly, an attested subdirector does not guarantee that every workplace title accepts sub- naturally.
auto-: self-action and a false friend in segmentation
Productive auto- means “self” or “by oneself”: autocrítica, autoretrat, autoavaluació, autodefensa. It is especially common in institutional and academic vocabulary.
Al final del curs, cada alumne farà una autoavaluació breu.
At the end of the course, each student will complete a short self-assessment.
The colloquial noun auto means “car” in some compounds, as in autoescola. That word is a driving school, not a school that teaches itself. Automòbil is also lexicalized. Good morphological analysis tests the actual meaning, not just the initial letters.
Stress, accents, and spelling boundaries
The base normally retains its lexical stress: mòbil → immòbil, útil → inútil, legal → il·legal. Written accents follow the spelling rules of the complete word, and established forms preserve necessary diacritics. In longer derivations a suffix may subsequently shift stress, so do not generalize “a prefix can never affect the written accent” into a rule about every multi-step formation.
The default spelling is one word: antiracista, exalumne, preinscripció, autoavaluació. The same joining rule applies to the prefixes on this page. Under the current IEC spelling, the prefix is instead separated by a space before a capitalized name or acronym (anti OTAN), a numeral (sub 21), or another graphically special element. It is also separate when its scope is a multiword expression: ex alt càrrec, pro dret a decidir. A hyphen already internal to the base remains in place, as in actitud anti nord-americana. See Hyphens for the broader editorial system.
L'equip sub 21 jugarà dissabte contra el líder del grup.
The under-21 team will play the group leader on Saturday.
A realistic notice and dialogue
AVÍS: la sala romandrà tancada per sobrecàrrega elèctrica. Abans de reobrir-la, el servei tècnic revisarà la instal·lació i substituirà qualsevol component insegur.
NOTICE: the room will remain closed because of an electrical overload. Before reopening it, technical services will inspect the installation and replace any unsafe component. (formal notice)
The notice uses a lexical noun (sobrecàrrega), a transparent repeated action (reobrir), and a negative adjective (insegur). Their internal structures are useful, but their syntactic categories still govern the sentence.
—Ho podem reescriure avui? —Sí, però no sobrecarreguem el text. Primer desfem el canvi d'ahir i després el reordenem.
—Can we rewrite it today? —Yes, but let's not overload the text. First we undo yesterday's change and then reorder it.
Correction exercise
Correct the form in each sentence before reading the answer.
- És una decisió inresponsable. → És una decisió irresponsable. Assimilation gives ir- before r.
- Han re-obert el teatre. → Han reobert el teatre. A prefix before an ordinary common-word base is joined.
- Comença el curs posoperatori. → Comença el curs postoperatori. Catalan retains post-.
- Juga amb la selecció sub21. → Juga amb la selecció sub 21. Under the current standard, a prefix before a numeral is separated by a space.
Common Mistakes
❌ És una mesura inpossible d'aplicar.
Incorrect assimilation: in- becomes im- before p.
✅ És una mesura impossible d'aplicar.
It is an impossible measure to implement.
❌ Han re-obert les inscripcions.
Incorrect ordinary spelling: re- is joined directly to a common-word base.
✅ Han reobert les inscripcions.
They have reopened registration.
❌ L'illegalitat de l'acord era evident.
Incorrect: the geminate l requires the middle dot.
✅ La il·legalitat de l'acord era evident.
The illegality of the agreement was evident.
❌ Demà comença el posgrau d'anàlisi de dades.
Spanish-influenced spelling: standard Catalan uses post- here.
✅ Demà comença el postgrau d'anàlisi de dades.
The postgraduate data-analysis course starts tomorrow.
Key Takeaways
- Productive prefixes provide a structural meaning, but attested usage decides whether a possible coinage is idiomatic.
- re- repeats, des- often reverses or removes, and negative in- assimilates: impossible, irregular, il·legal.
- Standard Catalan uses pre- and post- in forms such as preinscripció and postoperatori.
- sobre- and sub- extend from spatial relations to excessive/insufficient degree; auto- productively marks self-action.
- Join a prefix to an ordinary one-word base. Use a space in types such as anti OTAN, sub 21, and ex alt càrrec; do not add an English-style prefix hyphen.
- Preserve accents, doubled consonants, and the middle dot of each established result.
