The Middle Dot in L·L

The Catalan ela geminada is written l·l: two letter l*s separated by a raised middle dot. It historically represents a geminate, or doubled, /l/, as in *col·legi, pel·lícula, and intel·ligent. The sign is part of the word's spelling; a full stop, hyphen, bullet, or plain ll is not an acceptable replacement.

There is no completely productive rule that predicts every word with l·l. Etymology decides much of the inventory. The practical solution is to learn reliable word families and visual patterns while understanding what the middle dot prevents you from reading.

L, l·l, and ll are three different spellings

SpellingFunctionExamples
lone alveolar lateralala, color
l·lela geminada; historically two lateral segmentscel·la, col·legi
llpalatal lateral spellingcella, llibre

The near-minimal pair cel·la “cell” and cella “eyebrow” shows why the graphic distinction matters. In careful pronunciation, cel·la has a longer or syllable-divided lateral, while cella has the palatal sound represented by ll.

For the articulation and regional behavior of ll, see Catalan Palatals.

La cel·la té una finestra petita.

The cell has a small window.

Té una cicatriu just damunt de la cella.

She has a scar just above her eyebrow.

Many contemporary speakers simplify the geminate in ordinary speech (informal), whereas (regional: Balearic) a clearer doubled realization is often preserved. Spelling does not vary with that pronunciation. Even if col·legi sounds like it has one [l] in your accent, it still requires l·l.

💡
The middle dot is not there to force an exotic new consonant. Its first practical job is to stop two written l's from being read as the palatal digraph ll.

The character is a middle dot, not punctuation

The correct sequence is three characters: lowercase l + U+00B7 MIDDLE DOT + lowercase l: l·l. The dot sits at mid-height and has no spaces around it. A baseline period produces col.legi; a hyphen produces col-legi; two bare letters produce collegi. All three are wrong.

La nova col·lecció arribarà al col·legi dilluns.

The new collection will arrive at the school on Monday.

On many Catalan keyboard layouts, the middle dot is available with Shift + 3; mobile keyboards often expose it by holding the period or through the symbols panel. Layouts differ, so the universal check is the character itself: copy or insert · (U+00B7), never a visual approximation. Spell-checkers and search systems do not reliably treat the substitutes as equivalent.

In all capitals, write COL·LEGI with both l's capitalized. The raised dot remains a dot; it does not become a period or disappear.

Syllabification and line breaks

The two l's belong historically to adjacent syllables: cel-la, col-le-gi, il-lu-si-ó, pel-lí-cu-la. The middle dot signals the boundary inside the consonant sequence, but it is not itself a syllable. In ordinary unbroken text, always retain the full spelling l·l.

La pel·lícula explica una història paral·lela.

The film tells a parallel story.

La sol·licitud inclou una còpia del títol.

The application includes a copy of the certificate.

The safest digital practice is not to allow software to strand the dot on its own. Modern layout engines normally handle l·l correctly. If a line must be divided manually in a specialist editing context, follow the publication's Catalan hyphenation system rather than replacing the middle dot with a hyphen in the stored word.

Productive families that reveal l·l

Morphology turns many apparently isolated spellings into families. Once one member is secure, its relatives become easier to predict.

FamilyMembersUseful cue
COLL-col·lega, col·legi, col·lecció, col·laborarmany learned col·l- words keep the doubled lateral
ILL-il·legal, il·lès, il·lusió, il·luminarprefix il- before an l-initial base produces il·l-
NULnul, nul·la, anul·lar, anul·lacióthe learned stem restores l·l before a vowel
TRANQUILtranquil, tranquil·la, tranquil·litatthe family alternates final l with intervocalic l·l
METALLmetall, metàl·lic, metal·lúrgiathe family alternates ll and l·l by structure

La nova col·lega col·laborarà amb nosaltres.

The new colleague will collaborate with us.

Han anul·lat l'activitat per una alerta meteorològica.

They've canceled the activity because of a weather alert.

💡
A related form may explain the two l's even when sound does not. Masculine nul and tranquil have one final l, while nul·la, tranquil·la, and their derivatives restore l·l before a vowel. This is more reliable than listening for length in casual speech.

Patterns help, but lexical learning remains necessary

Frequent beginnings include al·l- (al·lèrgia, al·lusió), il·l- (il·lusió, il·legal), and col·l- (col·legi, col·locar). Frequent endings include -el·la (novel·la, parcel·la), -il·la (goril·la, tranquil·la), and -il·lar (vacil·lar, destil·lar).

But look-alikes such as alegria, celebrar, color, columna, elaborar, milió, religió, selecció, and solució have no middle dot. There is no honest sound-only shortcut. Spanish cognates can mislead in both directions: Spanish colegio has one l, while Catalan has col·legi; Spanish ilusión does not visually preserve the Catalan l·l.

La novel·la parla d'un goril·la molt intel·ligent.

The novel is about a very intelligent gorilla.

Editing exercise

Correct the message L'Alícia col.labora en una colecció de películes del colegi. Check the apostrophe and accents too, but focus on choosing the true middle dot rather than a period or plain ll.

❌ L 'Alicia col.labora en una colecció de películes del colegi.

Incorrect — the sentence has apostrophe, accent, and ela geminada errors.

✅ L'Alícia col·labora en una col·lecció de pel·lícules del col·legi.

Alícia is collaborating on a collection of films from the school.

Common Mistakes

1. Typing a period instead of a middle dot.

❌ La pel.lícula és excel.lent.

Incorrect — both words require U+00B7 MIDDLE DOT.

✅ La pel·lícula és excel·lent.

The film is excellent.

2. Replacing l·l with the palatal spelling ll.

❌ La cella del monestir és buida.

Incorrect for the intended meaning 'cell' — cella means 'eyebrow'.

✅ La cel·la del monestir és buida.

The monastery cell is empty.

3. Importing a Spanish single l.

❌ El colegio organitza una activitat.

Incorrect — the Catalan word is col·legi.

✅ El col·legi organitza una activitat.

The school is organizing an activity.

4. Trusting simplified pronunciation.

❌ Estic tranquilla perquè ja l'han anulat.

Incorrect spelling — casual pronunciation does not remove the middle dots.

✅ Estic tranquil·la perquè ja l'han anul·lat.

I'm calm because they've already canceled it.

Key Takeaways

Write ela geminada as l·l, with a real middle dot and no spaces. It differs from both single l and palatal ll, and the two l's historically divide across syllables. Pronunciation may simplify regionally or informally, so use families such as nul–nul·la and col·legi–col·legial plus lexical memory. A period, hyphen, bullet, or missing dot is never typographically equivalent.
