Catalan adjective-forming suffixes package recurring meanings into a word: perill + -ós → perillós “dangerous,” comarca + -al → comarcal, and llegir + -ible → llegible. Once formed, the result behaves as an adjective: it modifies a noun, can follow a copular verb, and agrees according to its own inflectional pattern. The suffix does not merely translate an English ending; it selects a Catalan base, may alter its spelling, and may produce a meaning that has become conventional.
This page uses Central Catalan as its pronunciation baseline, but the written forms belong to the shared standard. The crucial distinction is between a productive pattern, which speakers can extend cautiously, and a lexicalized formation, whose form or meaning must be learned as vocabulary. A transparent invention can be understandable without being idiomatic Catalan.
A map of the main suffixes
| Suffix | Typical input | Core meaning | Agreement | Productivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -ós, -osa | noun | characterized by, rich in | four forms | productive, with lexical restrictions |
| -al | noun | relating to | one singular form; plural -als | productive in learned and institutional vocabulary |
| -ari, -ària | noun | relating to, belonging to, engaged in | four forms | productive in formal terminology |
| -enc, -enca | place or noun | origin, association, characteristic | four forms | available, but demonyms are lexical |
| -í, -ina | place or noun | origin or relation | four forms | available, but selection is lexical |
| -able, -ible | verb or learned root | capable of, suitable for | one singular form; plural -s | productive, especially -able |
The notation -ós names a suffix, whereas perillós is a complete word. Do not write an analysis such as perill-ós in ordinary prose; the hyphen is analytical notation, not the spelling of the adjective.
-ós, -osa: a salient quality
The suffix -ós commonly attaches to a noun and means “having, containing, or strongly displaying” what the noun denotes: perill → perillós, soroll → sorollós, afecte → afectuós, boira → boirós. It often yields a qualitative adjective, so degree modification is natural: molt sorollós, poc afectuosa. Its four forms are -ós, -osa, -osos, -oses; only the masculine singular bears the written accent.
Han tancat el camí perquè aquest tram és massa perillós quan plou.
They have closed the path because this stretch is too dangerous when it rains.
Busquem una sala menys sorollosa per poder fer l'entrevista.
We are looking for a less noisy room so we can conduct the interview.
The formation may require more than simply deleting the last letter: afecte → afectuós and oli → oliós contain conventional stem shapes. Some words are semantically lexicalized. Curiós can mean “eager to know,” not merely “containing curiosity,” and graciós normally means “funny, charming” rather than any mechanically predictable sense based on gràcia.
-al and -ari: relational adjectives
Relational adjectives classify a noun by domain or connection: política cultural, transport comarcal, energia solar. Unlike a qualitative adjective, a purely relational adjective does not normally express a degree. Una decisió molt cultural is possible only after cultural has been reinterpreted qualitatively, for example as “showing a great deal of culture.”
L'ajuntament ha ampliat el servei comarcal d'autobusos.
The town council has expanded the county bus service.
L'informe anual separa la despesa social de la despesa cultural.
The annual report separates social spending from cultural spending.
Adjectives in -al have the same singular form for both genders: un programa cultural, una activitat cultural; the plural is culturals. The suffix is frequent in (formal), (academic), technical, and administrative vocabulary, but many members are everyday words too.
The suffix -ari, -ària likewise forms relational adjectives: universitari, pressupostari, comunitari, alimentari. Here gender is visible, and the feminine has a grave accent because its stress and syllable structure require -ària.
La biblioteca universitària obrirà també els diumenges durant els exàmens.
The university library will also open on Sundays during exams.
Les entitats comunitàries han demanat més espais al barri.
Community organizations have asked for more premises in the neighborhood.
Many -ari forms can also name a person: un universitari, una funcionària. That is a later nominal use of the adjective, and it keeps normal gender and number agreement. See substantivization.
-enc and -í: origin and demonyms
Catalan uses several suffixes for inhabitants and geographical association. -enc, -enca appears in sabadellenc, reusenc, eivissenc; -í, -ina appears in barceloní, mallorquí, alacantí. These formations agree: una autora eivissenca, dos músics mallorquins. Demonyms and language names are lowercase in Catalan.
La cooperativa reusenca ven oli a diversos mercats europeus.
The Reus-based cooperative sells oil in several European markets.
Una arquitecta barcelonina dirigirà la reforma de l'edifici.
A female architect from Barcelona will direct the renovation of the building.
There is no reliable rule that derives the demonym from the place name. Compare Girona → gironí, Sabadell → sabadellenc, València → valencià and Lleida → lleidatà. History and established use choose the suffix. A Spanish cognate is no guarantee either: Spanish ibicenco corresponds to Catalan eivissenc, based on Eivissa.
The same shape may develop a descriptive meaning. Rogenc means “reddish,” not “from a place called Roge,” and primerenc means “early.” These are lexical adjective families, not freely generated demonyms.
-able and -ible: possibility and suitability
The suffix -ble, usually realized as -able or -ible, forms adjectives meaning that an action can be performed or undergone: inflar → inflable, acceptar → acceptable, llegir → llegible, convertir → convertible. The derivative is invariant for gender and takes -s in the plural.
El document és llegible, però cal escanejar-ne una còpia amb més resolució.
The document is legible, but a copy needs to be scanned at a higher resolution.
Necessitem materials reutilitzables que es puguin rentar fàcilment.
We need reusable materials that can be washed easily.
With first-conjugation verbs, -able is the productive default: adaptar → adaptable, reciclar → reciclable. Many -ible words belong to inherited or learned families: admetre → admissible, comprendre → comprensible, accedir → accessible. Do not create -ible forms merely because an English or Spanish cognate has one. Even when the structure is transparent, an established rival may block the expected coinage.
Some members have shifted meaning. Agradable now means “pleasant,” not simply “capable of being pleased”; responsable can mean “responsible” or “person in charge.” These are lexicalized outcomes.
Stress, spelling, and agreement come after derivation
Derivation can move the stress: perill → perillós, Barcelona → barceloní. Write the accent required by the new word, not by the base. It can also expose a spelling alternation that preserves pronunciation: boca → boqueta belongs to the evaluative system, while adjective families such as elèctric → electricitat show that a family need not keep every accent or letter unchanged.
Once the adjective exists, ordinary agreement applies. Compare the segmented families:
| Base + suffix | Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Masculine plural | Feminine plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| perill + -ós | perillós | perillosa | perillosos | perilloses |
| universitat + -ari | universitari | universitària | universitaris | universitàries |
| Barcelona + -í | barceloní | barcelonina | barcelonins | barcelonines |
| cultura + -al | cultural | cultural | culturals | culturals |
For the general system, see basic adjective agreement.
A realistic editorial decision
—Hi posem «una proposta innovativa»? —Millor «una proposta innovadora». «Innovativa» s'entén, però en aquest text institucional la forma consolidada és «innovadora».
—Shall we write ‘an innovatory proposal’? —‘An innovative proposal’ is better. Innovativa is understandable, but in this institutional text innovadora is the established form.
This is the practical limit of productivity. Morphology may generate a possible word, yet genre and attested use determine whether readers regard it as normal. (Formal) editorial work is especially conservative; (informal) speech may tolerate playful new formations when the intended meaning is obvious.
Common Mistakes
❌ Han aprovat una reforma universitari molt ambiciosa.
Incorrect — an adjective in -ari must agree; reforma is feminine.
✅ Han aprovat una reforma universitària molt ambiciosa.
They have approved a very ambitious university reform.
❌ És una carretera perillosa i uns revolts perilloses.
Incorrect — masculine plural revolts requires perillosos.
✅ És una carretera perillosa i uns revolts perillosos.
It is a dangerous road with dangerous bends.
❌ La meva companya és Barcelonina.
Incorrect — Catalan demonyms are lowercase, and the established spelling is barcelonina.
✅ La meva companya és barcelonina.
My colleague is from Barcelona.
❌ Aquest fitxer no és abrible amb el programa antic.
Incorrect Spanish-based formation: the Catalan verb is obrir, and this context normally uses es pot obrir.
✅ Aquest fitxer no es pot obrir amb el programa antic.
This file cannot be opened with the old program.
❌ L'associació ha convidat una escriptora ibicenca.
This copies the Spanish demonym. Catalan uses Eivissa and eivissenc/eivissenca.
✅ L'associació ha convidat una escriptora eivissenca.
The association has invited a female writer from Eivissa.
Correction exercise
Correct the suffix or agreement: una ruta perillós; dues entitats comunitaris; un informe que és llegible i dues còpies llegibles; una artista de Sabadell, una artista sabadellina. The corrected forms are una ruta perillosa; dues entitats comunitàries; un informe llegible i dues còpies llegibles; una artista sabadellenca. The last correction is lexical rather than mechanical: established usage chooses sabadellenca.
Key Takeaways
- -ós normally creates qualitative, gradable adjectives; -al and -ari commonly create relational ones.
- Derived adjectives still obey agreement: compare perillós/perillosa with gender-invariant cultural.
- -enc and -í occur in demonyms, but the choice of suffix must be learned for each place.
- -able/-ible expresses possibility or suitability, but many frequent forms and meanings are lexicalized.
- Derivation may shift stress or alter the stem. Hyphens used to show base + suffix are notation, not ordinary spelling.
- Structural transparency does not guarantee idiomatic status; attested Catalan usage can block a plausible coinage.
