Allomorphy in Derivational Families

A morpheme does not always have one visible shape. In Catalan, a base may alternate because spelling preserves a sound before a new suffix, because stress has moved, or because an inherited everyday word and a learned Latin form coexist in the same lexical family. These recurrent shapes are allomorphs: forms that realize related lexical material in different environments.

At C1, the essential skill is diagnostic. The c/qu spelling adjustment illustrated by ric → riquesa applies predictably whenever a family preserves /k/ before e or i; the existence of the derivative riquesa itself is nevertheless lexical. By contrast, aigua → aquàtic involves a learned stem that must be known lexically. Treating both as the same kind of mechanical letter replacement leads to invented words.

Productive spelling allomorphs

Catalan spelling changes the visible edge of a stem when a suffix begins with a vowel. The purpose is often to preserve a consonant value across different letter environments. The alternations c/qu and ç/c are particularly transparent.

BaseDerived formWhat changes
secsequedatc → qu before e preserves /k/
ricriquesac → qu before e preserves /k/
dolçdolcesaç → c before e
feliçfelicitatç → c before i
boigboja, bogeriafinal cluster alternates with intervocalic j/g

La sequedat d'aquest estiu ha obligat a limitar el reg.

This summer's drought has forced restrictions on watering.

La riquesa del projecte és la diversitat de punts de vista.

The strength of the project is its diversity of viewpoints.

La dolcesa de la crema contrasta amb l'acidesa de la fruita.

The sweetness of the cream contrasts with the acidity of the fruit.

No penso participar en aquesta bogeria a última hora.

I'm not going to take part in this madness at the last minute.

These are written alternations, not random spellings. The family provides evidence about pronunciation: sec and sequedat retain the velar consonant, while dolç and dolcesa retain the sibilant through the spelling rule. A hyphen is not inserted between a native stem and a suffix.

💡
Ask whether the change is predictable from Catalan spelling before memorizing a second stem. If c before e would signal the wrong sound, qu may simply be the spelling needed to preserve /k/.

Stress shift and written accents

Derivational suffixes often carry or determine the main stress. When stress moves, an accent required in the base can disappear, and a vowel that was prominent in the base may become reduced in speech. Compare telèfon → telefònic, nació → nacional, and mètode → metodologia. The accents record the stress of each whole word, not permanent properties of a root; see the general accent rules for the spelling system behind them.

L'atenció telefònica acaba a les sis, però el formulari continua actiu.

Telephone support ends at six, but the form remains active.

In Central Catalan, unstressed a and e generally neutralize to [ə], while unstressed o generally neutralizes to [u], subject to familiar lexical and phonological exceptions. Thus a vowel in a derived form may sound different without changing its spelling or lexical identity. Casa → caseta and terra → terreny illustrate the general interaction between derivation and vowel reduction. Other major varieties have different reduction patterns; this phonetic variation does not license alternative spellings.

Ens han llogat una caseta prop del riu per al cap de setmana.

They have rented us a small house near the river for the weekend.

El terreny encara és moll i avui no hi podran entrar les màquines.

The ground is still wet and the machines won't be able to enter today.

English speakers often keep the stress of a familiar base when pronouncing a long derivative. Catalan instead assigns stress to the derived word. Spanish cognates can help reveal a family, but they cannot decide Catalan vowel quality, accent placement, or the accepted derivative.

Stem extension inside native families

Some families reveal a different or extended stem in inflection and derivation. The feminine amiga exposes the voiced stem amig- behind final amic; established derivatives include jove → joventut, bo → bondat, and amic → amistat. Part of the alternation is morphophonological; part has been fixed by lexical history. Speakers recognize the family, but they do not freely choose between jov- and joven- before every suffix.

La joventut del poble reclama més transport públic els caps de setmana.

The town's young people are calling for more public transport at weekends.

Li agraeixo la bondat, però no puc acceptar aquest tracte de favor.

I appreciate her kindness, but I cannot accept this preferential treatment.

La seva amistat va començar quan totes dues treballaven a l'hospital.

Their friendship began when they both worked at the hospital.

The segmented analyses jov-en-tut and bon-dat are useful descriptions, but they are not recipes for unlimited coinage. Catalan has amistat, not a newly assembled amicitat; it has bondat, not boitat. These are precisely the places where an advanced learner must combine structural analysis with dictionary knowledge.

Learned and inherited stems

A much larger alternation appears when an everyday inherited word shares its history with a learned form taken from Latin or Greek. Catalan may use the inherited stem in ordinary reference and the learned stem in technical or relational adjectives: llavi / labial, boca / bucal, ull / ocular, aigua / aquàtic, llengua / lingüístic. These are lexical allomorphs in a broad family, not productive sound rules.

llengualingüísticacademic description

La consonant és bilabial perquè s'articula fent tocar els dos llavis.

The consonant is bilabial because it is articulated by bringing both lips together.

El dentista li ha recomanat un col·lutori per millorar la higiene bucal.

The dentist recommended a mouthwash to improve her oral hygiene.

L'informe analitza la diversitat lingüística de l'arxipèlag.

The report analyses the linguistic diversity of the archipelago.

The diaeresis in lingüístic is real orthographic information: it shows that u is pronounced in the group güi. Copying Spanish lingüístico without adapting the suffix would produce neither the right Catalan ending nor the right agreement paradigm.

💡
Learned stems are best learned as members of a pair: ull—ocular, boca—bucal, llengua—lingüístic. Do not try to derive one by applying a universal sound change to the other.

Historical doublets are not synonyms

The inherited and learned routes can also produce two independent words whose meanings have separated. Cadira and càtedra ultimately belong to the same historical family, but modern cadira means “chair,” while càtedra refers to an academic chair or professorship. Likewise, comptar and learned computar overlap historically but have different modern distributions; escoltar is everyday “listen,” whereas auscultar is the medical act of listening to internal body sounds.

La metgessa li ha auscultat els pulmons i després li ha demanat que esperi a la cadira del passadís.

The doctor listened to his lungs and then asked him to wait on the chair in the corridor.

El sistema computa els vots automàticament, però després una persona els torna a comptar.

The system computes the votes automatically, but afterwards a person counts them again.

Calling these pairs allomorphy is useful historically, but synchronically they are distinct lexical items. Their register and collocations must be learned. Auscultar (medical/formal) cannot replace escoltar in ordinary conversation.

A correction exercise

Choose the attested member of the family, then compare your answer with the corrected sentence in the mistakes section: “La del desert afecta els cultius” (sequetat / sequedat); “La protecció és obligatòria” (ullal / ocular); “Valorem molt la seva _” (boitat / bondat). The first answer follows a spelling alternation; the other two require lexical knowledge. That contrast is the central lesson.

Common Mistakes

❌ La secedat del sòl ha fet malbé els arbres.

Incorrect: the /k/ of sec is preserved with qu before e in sequedat.

✅ La sequedat del sòl ha fet malbé els arbres.

The dryness of the soil has damaged the trees.

❌ La seva boitat va sorprendre tothom.

Incorrect: the established abstract noun from bo is bondat, not a transparent coinage.

✅ La seva bondat va sorprendre tothom.

His kindness surprised everyone.

❌ Necessita una revisió ullal cada sis mesos.

Incorrect: the established learned relational adjective is ocular; ullal is a different noun meaning fang or canine tooth.

✅ Necessita una revisió ocular cada sis mesos.

She needs an eye examination every six months.

❌ És un estudi llengüístic molt detallat.

Incorrect spelling: the learned adjective is lingüístic, with i in the stem and a diaeresis over ü.

✅ És un estudi lingüístic molt detallat.

It is a very detailed linguistic study.

Key Takeaways

  • Predictable spelling alternations include sec—sequedat, ric—riquesa and dolç—dolcesa.
  • Derivation can shift stress and remove or introduce written accents: telèfon—telefònic, nació—nacional.
  • Central Catalan vowel reduction changes pronunciation under unstressed conditions, not the arbitrary spelling of the family.
  • Learned stems such as labial, bucal, ocular, aquàtic and lingüístic must be learned with their everyday relatives.
  • Historical doublets can become separate words. Structural transparency never guarantees synonymy or productive coinage.
