A neologism is a new lexical item or a new meaning for an existing item. Catalan creates them continuously: technology requires names, social change makes old distinctions newly salient, and speakers play with productive affixes. The central C1 question is not “Can I understand this formation?” but “Has this formation become an appropriate Catalan term for this audience and domain?” The competing option of importing a foreign form is treated on the loanwords page.
A good neologism balances structural well-formedness, transparent meaning, economy, pronounceability, integration into Catalan grammar, and evidence of use. No single test is decisive. A beautifully regular coinage can fail because another term is already established; an internationalism can succeed because specialists need cross-language recognition.
The main creation strategies
Catalan can derive a new word with affixes, combine existing bases, calque a foreign expression, extend an old word to a new sense, or integrate a loan. Contemporary examples illustrate all five routes.
| Strategy | Example | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| prefixation | desinformació | des- + informació |
| learned combining form | teletreball | tele- + treball |
| compound | videotrucada | video- + trucada |
| semantic extension | núvol | physical cloud → remote computing infrastructure |
| adapted loan | pòdcast | donor form adapted to Catalan stress spelling |
El teletreball ha reduït els desplaçaments de part de la plantilla.
Remote work has reduced commuting for part of the staff.

Les dades s'emmagatzemen al núvol, però també en guardem una còpia local.
The data is stored in the cloud, but we also keep a local copy.
These examples are now conventional enough that speakers need not reconstruct them afresh. A newly imaginable compound is at a different stage: its pieces may be clear, yet readers may hesitate because they have never seen that particular combination.
Productivity is a license with limits
Productive patterns let speakers build new items. Prefixes such as micro-, ciber-, tele- and des- combine readily in current technical and public vocabulary: microplàstic, ciberatac, teletreball, descarbonització. Catalan normally joins a prefix directly to a one-word base.
L'estudi ha trobat microplàstics en mostres recollides lluny de la costa.
The study found microplastics in samples collected far from the coast.
L'empresa ha reforçat els servidors després de l'últim ciberatac.
The company strengthened its servers after the latest cyberattack.
Current IEC spelling normally joins a prefix to a simple lowercase base. Under the IEC's 2021 simplification, the prefix is separated by a space before a capital, numeral, symbol, or other graphically special element, and before a lexicalized multiword base: anti OTAN, selecció sub 21, ex alt càrrec. Ordinary one-word bases are joined: postpandèmia, not post-pandèmia under the general current rule. A nonlexical multiword description also keeps the prefix joined to its first word, as in exdirectora general.
Transparency and competing analyses
A term is transparent when its likely meaning is recoverable without a private explanation. Videotrucada identifies both medium and event. Finançament col·lectiu identifies a financing model, while micromecenatge highlights many small patrons. The two expressions can overlap, but a domain may define them more narrowly. Terminological work asks what distinction users actually need.

The documentary was financed through a crowdfunding campaign.
Abans de publicar el glossari, hem de definir què entendrem per finançament col·lectiu.
Before publishing the glossary, we need to define what we mean by collective financing.
Too much transparency can also make a term cumbersome. A short internationalism may be more useful within a specialist community, provided it can take Catalan articles, plurals, and derivatives. The choice between an adapted loan and a native formation is therefore empirical and communicative, not a contest of purity.
IEC, TERMCAT, and different kinds of authority
The Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) codifies the general standard, including orthography and dictionary entries. TERMCAT develops and disseminates terminology, especially where a scientific, technical, professional, or administrative field needs a stable designation. Their functions overlap but are not identical. A TERMCAT proposal can answer a domain-specific naming problem before a word appears in a general dictionary.
For Valencian public contexts, the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL) is also an authoritative reference. This does not mean every territory needs a different technical lexicon. Most neologisms are shared; regional labeling matters when actual form or preference differs.

Corpus evidence: more than a search count
Evidence of use should answer four questions: who uses the form, where, with what meaning, and how consistently. Raw web counts can multiply copied pages, machine translations, and search-engine noise. A useful sample includes independent texts, identifiable Catalan authors or institutions, appropriate dates, and the domain where the term is supposed to work.
A candidate found only in one translated catalogue is weakly established. A form used consistently in university courses, professional associations, public broadcasters, and specialist journals has stronger support. Variation is informative: two forms may divide by region, register, or subfield rather than compete for a single winner.
Al corpus general gairebé no hi surt, però és habitual en les revistes de bioenginyeria.

Les dues denominacions conviuen, tot i que la forma breu predomina en textos divulgatius.
The two terms coexist, although the short form predominates in popular-science texts. (formal)
Internationalisms and adaptation
Internationally recognizable elements such as bio-, micro-, nano- and ciber- make technical terms portable. Yet Catalan still controls stress, accentuation, gender, and plural. Microplàstic carries the Catalan accent; pòdcast is masculine and forms pòdcasts. An English model does not determine Catalan capitalization or hyphenation.

A realistic terminology meeting
—La forma s'entén, però només l'hem trobada en traduccions automàtiques. —Doncs documentem l'alternativa que ja utilitzen els tècnics i enviem-la a revisió.
—The form is understandable, but we have found it only in machine translations. —Then let's document the alternative the technicians already use and submit it for review. (formal)
The first speaker tests corpus quality; the second does not invent a winner by intuition. This is how domain need, transparency, and usage evidence work together.
A practical evaluation sequence
First define the concept and its neighbours. Then list forms already in use, check IEC/AVL orthography and TERMCAT terminology, and examine good corpus examples. Test pronunciation, gender, plural, derivational family, and possible ambiguity. Finally choose for a specified audience and record variants rather than silently erasing them. Revisit the decision as usage develops.
English-speaking learners often begin by translating each English morpheme. Spanish-speaking learners may import a Spanish cognate unchanged. Both shortcuts can yield a comprehensible but unattested form. Catalan word formation is productive, but editorial convention is part of linguistic competence.

✅ L'empresa prepara un pla de postpandèmia.
The company is preparing a post-pandemic plan.
❌ Demà farem una vídeo-llamada amb l'equip.

❌ El document analitza la desinformacion digital.
Incorrect: a Spanish ending has been copied into a Catalan derivative.

Key Takeaways
- Catalan forms neologisms by derivation, compounding, calquing, semantic extension, and borrowing.
- Productivity gives a possible structure, not automatic idiomatic status.
- The IEC codifies the general standard; TERMCAT addresses specialized terminology; the AVL is authoritative for Valencian standard contexts.
- Good evidence identifies users, domain, meaning, date, and independent attestations rather than relying on raw search counts.
- A successful internationalism still needs Catalan spelling, stress, gender, plural, and derivational behavior.
