Philological commentary must keep three things separate: what a witness visibly contains, what an editor supplies, and what a scholar infers. That separation matters more than ceremonial vocabulary. A reader should always be able to tell whether a spelling is diplomatic, normalized, emended, reconstructed, or merely quoted from another edition.
This page concerns formal, academic Catalan used in textual scholarship, historical linguistics, critical editions, catalogues, and scholarly introductions. Terms such as testimoni, lliçó, variant and esmena have technical meanings here; they should not be imported unchanged into ordinary modern prose. Conversely, a historical spelling inside quotation marks is evidence, not a model for present-day Catalan. For the diachronic context behind such evidence, see Historical Dialects.
Name the kind of text the reader is seeing
A diplomatic edition (edició diplomàtica or edició paleogràfica) attempts to represent the wording and graphic features of a witness closely. A normalized edition regularizes selected features—often word division, capitalization, punctuation, or spelling—according to an announced policy. A critical edition establishes an edited text after comparing evidence and records consequential choices in an apparatus. These labels overlap differently across editorial traditions, so every project must define its own criteria.
Transcrivim el testimoni A de manera diplomàtica: conservem les grafies, la separació de mots i la puntuació de l'original, i desenvolupem les abreviatures entre parèntesis.
We transcribe witness A diplomatically: we preserve the original spelling, word division, and punctuation, and expand abbreviations in parentheses. (formal, technical)
En el text normalitzat regularitzem les majúscules i els accents, però mantenim les formes morfològiques documentades.
In the normalized text we regularize capitalization and accents, but retain the documented morphological forms. (formal, technical)
The verbs state editorial agency directly: transcrivim, conservem, desenvolupem, regularitzem, mantenim. English editorial prose also uses an institutional “we,” but English passives such as “capitalization has been normalized” are easy to calque excessively. Catalan often reads more clearly when the editor owns the intervention.
Quote first; then gloss and interpret
Quotation preserves the object of analysis. A gloss explains a form or gives a tightly controlled modern equivalent; a translation renders a larger passage idiomatically. Commentary should not silently replace the quoted wording with the meaning the commentator expects.
The following schematic example is devised to show editorial method, not presented as a historical citation:
Lliçó diplomàtica: «E aço fo fet lo digmenge».
Diplomatic reading: 'E aço fo fet lo digmenge.' (devised historical-looking sample; spelling preserved as an object of study)
Text normalitzat: «I açò fou fet el diumenge».
Normalized text: 'And this was done on Sunday.' (modernized graphic presentation of the devised sample)
La forma fo correspon aquí al passat simple de ésser; la normalització fou fa visible aquesta equivalència sense afirmar que el copista escrivís la forma moderna.
The form fo corresponds here to the simple past of ésser; the normalization fou makes that equivalence visible without claiming that the copyist wrote the modern form. (formal, philological)
In an actual edition, angle quotation marks—«...»—can delimit the cited wording, single quotation marks can enclose a meaning, and italics can identify forms under discussion. Follow the publication's style sheet consistently. Square brackets normally signal editorial addition or restoration, but their exact function must be declared: [m]ar might restore lost material, while mar [sic] comments on the witness. Never make one set of brackets do several undocumented jobs.
Refer to witnesses and readings precisely
In textual criticism, a testimoni is a material or transmitted witness to the text: a manuscript, print, copy, or other carrier. A lliçó is the wording offered by a witness at a particular point. A variant is a difference among readings; an error is already an analysis and therefore requires an argument.
Al vers 18, A llegeix mar, B conserva mare i C omet el mot; adoptem la lliçó de B perquè manté el còmput sil·làbic i explica més fàcilment les altres dues.
At line 18, A reads mar, B preserves mare, and C omits the word; we adopt B's reading because it maintains the syllable count and more readily explains the other two. (formal, textual criticism)
L'omissió de C podria deure's a un salt d'igual a igual, però la disposició del manuscrit no permet confirmar-ho.
C's omission may be due to an eye-skip between similar sequences, but the manuscript's layout does not allow this to be confirmed. (formal, cautious claim)
The second sentence uses podria and no permet confirmar-ho because the cause is inferred. Es deu a would present it as established. Good philological modality tells the reader how far the evidence reaches:
| Formulation | Commitment | Use |
|---|---|---|
| el testimoni presenta / llegeix | direct observation | visible wording or layout |
| sembla indicar / probablement | supported inference | interpretation with alternatives |
| podria respondre a | tentative hypothesis | cause not demonstrable from current evidence |
| no es pot determinar | explicit limit | evidence does not decide the issue |
Keep historical and regional forms in their proper frame
Historical Catalan is not simply modern Central Catalan with unusual spelling. A form may reflect chronology, region, genre, scribal practice, or contact, and those explanations compete. Modern Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese forms are not fossils; they are current regional forms and must be labeled as such when relevant.
La forma eixida és viva en valencià contemporani i també té una llarga documentació històrica; en aquest passatge, la data i la procedència del testimoni són més informatives que una simple etiqueta d'arcaisme.
The form eixida is alive in contemporary Valencian and also has a long historical record; in this passage, the witness's date and provenance are more informative than a simple label of archaism. (formal; regional note)
Calling every non-Central form “archaic” erases living variation. At the other extreme, modernizing a medieval text into one present regional standard can hide evidence. State whether the goal is linguistic study, a reading edition for the public, classroom access, or reconstruction of an authorial text; the audience determines how much apparatus and normalization are useful.
Before and after: revise the claim, not just the vocabulary
Before (inflated and overconfident):
La realització d'una anàlisi exhaustiva possibilita la constatació indubtable que la variant fou introduïda pel copista valencià.
The carrying out of an exhaustive analysis makes possible the indisputable finding that the variant was introduced by the Valencian copyist. (overloaded, unsupported)
After (formal, evidence-led):
La variant només apareix al testimoni V, copiat a València el 1428. Aquest fet suggereix que es va introduir durant la còpia, però no permet atribuir-la amb certesa al copista principal.
The variant appears only in witness V, copied in Valencia in 1428. This fact suggests that it was introduced during copying, but does not allow it to be attributed with certainty to the principal scribe. (formal, calibrated)
The revision replaces a chain of nominalizations with observable evidence, an inference, and a limit. It also separates provenance from identity: a manuscript copied in Valencia does not make every feature “Valencian,” and a regional label needs linguistic evidence.
One paragraph annotated for stylistic effects
El testimoni B conserva la lliçó terra antiga, mentre que A presenta terra alta. Atès que la confusió entre antiga i alta no s'explica per una simple errada gràfica, és possible que les dues formes depenguin de models diferents. Amb tot, l'absència dels antígrafs obliga a mantenir obertes tant la hipòtesi de la contaminació com la d'una correcció independent.
Witness B preserves the reading terra antiga, whereas A has terra alta. Since the confusion between antiga and alta cannot be explained by a simple graphic error, the two forms may depend on different exemplars. Even so, the absence of the source copies requires both the contamination hypothesis and that of an independent correction to remain open. (annotated formal paragraph)
Mentre que establishes the variant; atès que supplies the reasoning; és possible que marks inference and takes the subjunctive depenguin; amb tot prevents the hypothesis from hardening into a conclusion. Tant... com... keeps two explanations parallel. The reference chain—B, A, les dues formes, els antígrafs—remains recoverable without repeating every noun.
Spoken, written, formal, and public-facing versions
Seminar explanation (planned speech):
Aquí B diu terra antiga, però A té terra alta. Podrien venir de dos models diferents; ara bé, com que no en conservem els antígrafs, no ho podem assegurar.
Here B says terra antiga, but A has terra alta. They may come from two different exemplars; still, since we do not preserve the source copies, we cannot be certain. (spoken academic Catalan)
Written technical version: the annotated paragraph above suits an article because it names the evidential steps and uses stable terminology.
Plain-language museum label:
Les dues còpies no diuen exactament el mateix. Potser provenen de versions diferents, però els documents que ho confirmarien no s'han conservat.
The two copies do not say exactly the same thing. They may come from different versions, but the documents that would confirm it have not survived. (plain public-facing prose)
Plain language removes lliçó, antígraf, and contaminació without falsifying the uncertainty. Formality is not the number of technical words; it is the fit among audience, evidence, and terminology.
Practice
- Turn Això demostra que l'autor era de Mallorca into a defensible claim based on one Balearic-looking feature. A possible revision is: Aquesta forma és compatible amb un origen mallorquí, però un sol tret no permet determinar la procedència de l'autor.
- Give a policy for an edition that modernizes punctuation and accents but preserves morphology. Name all three decisions explicitly.
- Rewrite Es fa la normalització del text with a visible editor: Normalitzem la puntuació i els accents del text.
Common Mistakes
❌ El manuscrit original diu aquesta frase, tot i que l'autògraf s'ha perdut.
Contradictory evidential claim: if the autograph is lost, a surviving witness cannot simply be called the author's original manuscript.
✅ El testimoni més antic conservat transmet aquesta frase.
The oldest surviving witness transmits this sentence. (precise evidential scope)
❌ Hem corregit totes les grafies estranyes.
Inadequate editorial description: strange is subjective and corrected hides what was changed.
✅ En la versió normalitzada regularitzem les grafies segons els criteris indicats a la introducció; la transcripció diplomàtica les conserva.
In the normalized version we regularize spellings according to the criteria stated in the introduction; the diplomatic transcription preserves them.
❌ La forma eixida és un arcaisme incorrecte.
Incorrect: eixida is a current standard Valencian form as well as a historically documented one.
✅ Eixida és la forma documentada al passatge i continua viva en valencià contemporani.
Eixida is the form documented in the passage and remains alive in contemporary Valencian.
❌ Aquesta variant prova definitivament que hi havia dos autors.
Overclaim: a textual variant alone does not establish double authorship.
✅ Aquesta variant podria ser compatible amb més d'una fase de redacció, entre altres explicacions possibles.
This variant may be compatible with more than one phase of composition, among other possible explanations.
❌ D'acord amb l'edició, «el passatge és corrupte» i per tant l'esmenem.
Unclear responsibility: the sentence does not identify which editor proposed corruption or why the present editor accepts it.
✅ Segons l'edició de Rius (2019: 74), el passatge és corrupte; adoptem la seva esmena perquè restableix la sintaxi sense alterar el lèxic transmès.
According to Rius's edition (2019: 74), the passage is corrupt; we adopt that editor's emendation because it restores the syntax without changing the transmitted vocabulary. (illustrative reference)
Key Takeaways
- Distinguish witness, transcription, normalization, emendation, and interpretation.
- Define the editorial policy instead of relying on a label such as diplomatic or critical.
- Quote the form under discussion and mark every supplied element with a declared convention.
- Use modality to separate observation from inference: presenta is not suggereix, and suggereix is not demostra.
- Treat historical and current regional forms accurately; modern variation is not defective or automatically archaic.
- Let technical terms serve recoverable evidence. Plain language can preserve the same argument when the audience does not need the apparatus.
