A long sentence is not simply several short sentences joined with commas. It has a hierarchy: one main clause carries the central assertion, while subordinate clauses frame, qualify, motivate or limit it. A periodic sentence delays that main assertion until preparatory material has built expectation: Tot i que..., després que..., i malgrat que..., el comitè va decidir....
This design can produce suspense, balance and analytical precision in (formal), (academic) or (literary) prose. It can also exhaust the reader. The goal is not maximum length but controlled processing: the reader should always know what is subordinate, what remains open, and where the sentence resolves.
Find the main-clause spine
Before extending a sentence, identify a short grammatical spine. Everything else must attach to it clearly.
El comitè va ajornar la votació.
The committee postponed the vote.
Now add a causal frame, a relative clause and a concession without losing the spine:
Com que l'informe que havia demanat la presidència encara no era definitiu, el comitè, tot i la pressió dels grups municipals, va ajornar la votació fins divendres.
Because the report requested by the chair was not yet final, the committee, despite pressure from the municipal groups, postponed the vote until Friday.
A bracketed analysis makes the hierarchy visible: [causal frame Com que [main noun l'informe [relative que havia demanat la presidència]] encara no era definitiu], [main clause el comitè [concessive insertion tot i la pressió...] va ajornar la votació...]. The finite verb va ajornar closes the expectation created by the long initial frame.
English and Catalan can both build this architecture, but Catalan permits subject omission and freer ordering. That freedom does not remove the reader's need for a clear spine. Avoid letting several possible subjects accumulate before an unexpressed subject verb.
Periodic versus cumulative order
A periodic sentence places qualifications before the core assertion; a cumulative sentence gives the assertion first and adds details afterward.
Després d'escoltar les famílies, d'examinar els informes tècnics i de comprovar que cap alternativa no garantia la seguretat, l'Ajuntament va tancar provisionalment l'edifici.
After listening to the families, examining the technical reports and confirming that no alternative guaranteed safety, the council provisionally closed the building. (periodic)
L'Ajuntament va tancar provisionalment l'edifici després d'escoltar les famílies, examinar els informes tècnics i comprovar que cap alternativa no garantia la seguretat.
The council provisionally closed the building after listening to the families, examining the technical reports and confirming that no alternative guaranteed safety. (cumulative)
The truth conditions are nearly the same, but the first asks the reader to retain three grounds before learning the decision. That delay foregrounds deliberation and makes the decision feel like a resolution. The second gives the news immediately and is easier to process; it is usually better in public information and online prose.
Periodic architecture is especially effective when the delayed main clause is short and forceful. If the resolution is itself crowded with qualifications, the sentence has no perceptible landing point.
Nesting without losing antecedents
Embedding is not inherently bad. A relative clause can sit inside an adverbial clause, which in turn frames a main clause. Trouble begins when two noun phrases could serve as the antecedent of a later relative or pronoun.
Quan la tècnica va lliurar al director l'informe que havia revisat la setmana anterior, ell en va qüestionar les conclusions.
When the technician gave the director the report that she had revised the previous week, he questioned its conclusions.
The relative que havia revisat attaches most naturally to l'informe, but its omitted subject could be la tècnica or el director. The pronoun ell then selects the male director, while en resumes de l'informe. If the identities matter, lexical repetition is better than elegant uncertainty:
Quan la tècnica va lliurar al director l'informe que ella mateixa havia revisat, el director en va qüestionar les conclusions.
When the technician gave the director the report that she herself had revised, the director questioned its conclusions.
Punctuation cannot repair a genuinely ambiguous dependency. A comma may mark a nonrestrictive relative, but it cannot tell us which person performed an unexpressed-subject action.
Connector management
Connectors tell the reader how clauses relate. In long sentences, use enough to reveal the hierarchy, but do not stack synonymous markers.
| Relation | Subordinator | Independent-clause connector |
|---|---|---|
| cause | perquè, com que, atès que | per tant, per això |
| concession | encara que, tot i que, malgrat que | tanmateix, amb tot |
| condition | si, sempre que, tret que | altrament (formal) |
| time | quan, mentre, després que | aleshores, després |
| result | de manera que | per consegüent (formal) |
Do not double-mark one relation without a rhetorical reason:
❌ Com que faltaven dos informes, per tant, vam ajornar la decisió.
Incorrect connector stack — com que already marks the cause; per tant cannot simply occupy the main-clause link.
✅ Com que faltaven dos informes, vam ajornar la decisió.
Because two reports were missing, we postponed the decision.
Alternatively split the clauses: Faltaven dos informes; per tant, vam ajornar la decisió. The semicolon signals two independent clauses, and per tant states their inferential relation.
Punctuation maps structure
A comma normally separates a long initial subordinate clause from its main clause. It must not separate an ordinary subject from its predicate. Semicolons divide substantial coordinated units that already contain commas; a colon announces an explanation, consequence or elaboration promised by the preceding clause.
Si els proveïdors confirmen els terminis abans de dimarts, podrem obrir al juny; si no els confirmen, haurem de revisar el calendari.
If the suppliers confirm the deadlines before Tuesday, we can open in June; if they do not, we will have to revise the schedule.
Només hi havia una sortida raonable: ajornar l'estrena fins que l'equip hagués resolt els problemes de so.
There was only one reasonable solution: postpone the premiere until the team had resolved the sound problems.
❌ El grup de recerca que havia obtingut el finançament, va ajornar l'estudi.
Incorrect — no comma belongs between the full subject and its main predicate.
✅ El grup de recerca que havia obtingut el finançament va ajornar l'estudi.
The research group that had obtained the funding postponed the study.
A pair of commas can, however, enclose a nonrestrictive relative: El grup de recerca, que ja havia obtingut el finançament, va iniciar l'estudi. The punctuation changes whether the relative identifies the group or adds background about an already identified group.
Keep parallel frames parallel
Long openings are easier to process when coordinated material has matching form:
Després de revisar els comptes, de parlar amb els proveïdors i d'escoltar el personal, la gerència va retirar la proposta.
After reviewing the accounts, speaking with suppliers and listening to staff, management withdrew the proposal.
Mixing després de + infinitive, a finite clause and a bare noun phrase forces the reader to rebuild the construction midstream. Parallelism is not decorative; it is a memory aid. See parallelism and balance.
Register and sentence length
Periodic syntax belongs most naturally to (formal) speeches, (academic) argument and (literary) narration. Administrative prose often imitates it badly, placing legal conditions, institutional names and nominalizations before the action. Public-facing instructions should usually lead with the action: Presenteu la sol·licitud abans del 30 de juny rather than delaying the command behind four clauses.
In (informal) speech, speakers do produce long stretches, but they manage them with pauses, repairs and discourse markers: Bé, si demà plou i, a més, l'Arnau no ens pot deixar la furgoneta, potser ho hauríem de passar a diumenge. Do not reproduce every spoken restart in formal writing.
There is no fixed maximum number of words or clauses. A forty-word sentence with a visible structure may be easier than a twenty-word sentence with ambiguous attachment. Length is a processing question, not a moral fault.
A natural editing dialogue
—Aquesta frase no s'acaba mai; quan arribo al verb ja he oblidat el subjecte. —Doncs posem la decisió al principi i deixem les tres condicions per al final. —Sí, així el lector sabrà de seguida què hem acordat.
—This sentence never ends; by the time I reach the verb I've forgotten the subject. —Then let's put the decision first and leave the three conditions until the end. —Yes, that way the reader will know immediately what we've agreed.
This is precisely the choice between periodic and cumulative design. Neither order is universally superior: choose the one that matches the reader's need.
Ambiguity diagnosis and correction task
Incorrect double linkage — tot i que already marks concession, so però is redundant here.
✅ Tot i que plovia, vam mantenir l'acte al pati.
Although it was raining, we held the event in the courtyard.
❌ La proposta que havíem revisat durant setmanes, es va aprovar per unanimitat.
Incorrect — the comma separates the subject from its predicate.
✅ La proposta que havíem revisat durant setmanes es va aprovar per unanimitat.
The proposal we had reviewed for weeks was approved unanimously.
❌ Atès que faltava documentació; l'expedient va quedar suspès.
Incorrect boundary — a semicolon cannot separate this subordinate causal clause from its main clause.
✅ Atès que faltava documentació, l'expedient va quedar suspès.
As documentation was missing, the file was put on hold. (formal)
❌ Després de revisar l'acta, que parléssim amb tres testimonis i la consulta dels arxius, vam rectificar.
Faulty parallelism — the three coordinated grounds have incompatible forms.
✅ Després de revisar l'acta, de parlar amb tres testimonis i de consultar els arxius, vam rectificar.
After reviewing the minutes, speaking to three witnesses and consulting the archives, we corrected our position.
Key Takeaways
- Build every long sentence around an identifiable main-clause spine.
- Periodic order delays the main assertion; cumulative order gives it first.
- Connectors mark hierarchy, but synonymous connector stacks obscure it.
- Use commas, semicolons and colons to map real syntactic boundaries.
- Resolve ambiguous antecedents lexically; punctuation cannot recover a missing distinction.
- Sentence length is successful only when the reader can retain the open dependencies until they resolve.
