Arranging a meeting forces speakers to coordinate several reference systems: day, date, clock time, future perspective, and the people expected to attend. The original dialogue below uses contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal/cross-regional). Friends usually arrange plans in a local dialect (regional), while MSA is natural in a formal classroom, cross-regional workplace, institutional telephone call, or carefully written exchange.
Arabic does not require a future marker in every future clause. A date or clock time can anchor a plain imperfect as a scheduled event, while attached سـ makes a future assertion explicit. The dialogue deliberately uses both so you can see the difference in discourse rather than memorizing an artificial one-form rule.
The complete dialogue
This is an original learning dialogue, not a quotation from another source.
ليلى: هل يناسبك أن نلتقي يوم الثلاثاء؟
laylā: hal yunāsibuka ʾan naltaqiya yawma th-thulāthāʾi?
Layla: Would it suit you if we meet on Tuesday? (Addressing one man.)
سامر: نعم، لكن لدي محاضرة حتى الثالثة.
sāmiru: naʿam, lākin ladayya muḥāḍaratun ḥattā th-thālitha(h).
Samer: Yes, but I have a lecture until three.
ليلى: إذن سنلتقي في الثالثة والنصف؟
laylā: ʾidhan sa-naltaqī fī th-thālithati wa-n-niṣfi?
Layla: Then shall we meet at half past three?
سامر: لا أستطيع في ذلك الوقت. هل الرابعة مناسبة؟
sāmiru: lā ʾastaṭīʿu fī dhālika l-waqti. hali r-rābiʿatu munāsiba(h)?
Samer: I cannot at that time. Is four o'clock suitable?
ليلى: نعم، الرابعة مناسبة. تنتهي محاضراتي قبلها.
laylā: naʿam, ar-rābiʿatu munāsiba(h). tantahī muḥāḍarātī qablahā.
Layla: Yes, four is suitable. My lectures finish before then.
سامر: أين سيكون الاجتماع؟
sāmiru: ʾayna sa-yakūnu l-ijtimāʿu?
Samer: Where will the meeting be?
ليلى: سيكون في قاعة المكتبة في الطابق الثاني.
laylā: sa-yakūnu fī qāʿati l-maktabati fī ṭ-ṭābiqi th-thānī.
Layla: It will be in the library hall on the second floor.
سامر: جيد. سأرسل تفاصيل الموعد إلى الطالبتين، وستنضمان إلينا أيضا.
sāmiru: jayyid. sa-ʾursilu tafāṣīla l-mawʿidi ʾilā ṭ-ṭālibatayni, wa-sa-tanḍammāni ʾilaynā ʾayḍan.
Samer: Good. I will send the appointment details to the two female students, and they will join us too.
ليلى: ممتاز، نلتقي يوم الثلاثاء، الثاني عشر من مايو، في الرابعة.
laylā: mumtāz, naltaqī yawma th-thulāthāʾi, ath-thāniya ʿashara min māyū, fī r-rābiʿa(h).
Layla: Excellent. We meet on Tuesday, the twelfth of May, at four.
Line-by-line grammar
The proposed meeting is not yet an established fact
هل يناسبك أن نلتقي...؟ frames the meeting as a proposal. The suffix ـك identifies the male addressee. After أن, final-weak نلتقي has subjunctive نلتقيَ in careful connected speech. This is not a future marker; it packages the proposed action as the complement of “suit.”
English says on Tuesday, but formal Arabic commonly uses adverbial يوم الثلاثاء, literally “the day of Tuesday.” يوم is the first term of an iḍāfa and takes no article. The named day is genitive as its complement.
Clock hours are feminine ordinals
Arabic tells the hour with the understood feminine noun الساعة. That is why three and four o'clock are الثالثة and الرابعة, not masculine الثالث and الرابع. الثالثة والنصف coordinates “the third hour and a half”: half past three. See the fuller system on telling time.
قبلها uses feminine ـها to refer back to the hour. A time expression can therefore become a discourse referent just like a person or object.
Explicit future and scheduled present divide the work
سنلتقي، سيكون، سأرسل، ستنضمان attach سـ directly to an imperfect. The marker makes the prospective assertion explicit; it does not by itself change the imperfect to the subjunctive. The dual ستنضمان therefore retains its indicative nūn.
By contrast, تنتهي محاضراتي قبلها and final نلتقي ... في الرابعة use plain imperfects. Their future reading comes from the agreed schedule. This resembles English “we meet Tuesday” or “the lecture ends before four,” but Arabic uses the pattern broadly in timetables and arrangements. Compare scheduled future forms with explicit سـ and سوف.
Agreement identifies the participants
محاضرات is a nonhuman plural, so feminine singular تنتهي is standard. The two female students, however, are human and control dual ستنضمان when the subject is understood from context. If the overt subject followed the verb, neutral VSO would use singular feminine ستنضم الطالبتان; with subject-first order, use full dual الطالبتان ستنضمان.
ستحضر الطالبتان في الرابعة.
sa-taḥḍuru ṭ-ṭālibatāni fī r-rābiʿa(h).
The two female students will attend at four. (Verb first: singular feminine verb.)
الطالبتان ستحضران في الرابعة.
aṭ-ṭālibatāni sa-taḥḍurāni fī r-rābiʿa(h).
The two female students will attend at four. (Subject first: full dual agreement.)
The date is an ordinal, not a cardinal label
الثاني عشر من مايو means “the twelfth of May.” The masculine ordinal agrees with understood اليوم, not with feminine الساعة. Dates often appear with من before the month. The form and preferred regional alternatives are treated on calendar dates.
Comprehension and production practice
For comprehension, state the rejected time, the accepted time, the venue, and the date. Which clauses contain explicit future سـ, and which plain imperfects receive future meaning from the schedule? Why does تنتهي remain feminine singular with plural محاضرات?
For production, move the meeting to Wednesday, the thirteenth of May, at half past five. First confirm it with explicit سنلتقي; then restate the final arrangement with scheduled نلتقي. Add two male colleagues and produce both verb-first singular agreement and subject-first dual agreement.
Common Mistakes
Making the clock ordinal masculine
❌ نلتقي في الرابع.
Incorrect—clock time agrees with understood feminine الساعة.
✅ نلتقي في الرابعة.
naltaqī fī r-rābiʿa(h).
We meet at four.
Separating the future prefix
❌ س نلتقي يوم الثلاثاء.
Incorrect spelling—future سـ attaches directly to the imperfect.
✅ سنلتقي يوم الثلاثاء.
sa-naltaqī yawma th-thulāthāʾ.
We will meet on Tuesday.
Forcing full dual agreement before an overt subject
❌ ستحضران الطالبتان في الرابعة.
Incorrect as neutral formal VSO—a preposed verb is singular before an overt dual subject.
✅ ستحضر الطالبتان الاجتماع في الرابعة.
sa-taḥḍuru ṭ-ṭālibatāni l-ijtimāʿa fī r-rābiʿa(h).
The two female students will attend the meeting at four.
Treating every future event as if سـ were compulsory
❌ لا يمكن استعمال المضارع بلا سـ مع موعد مستقبلي.
Incorrect analysis—a date or timetable can license a plain indicative with future reference.
✅ تبدأ المحاضرة غدا في العاشرة.
tabdaʾu l-muḥāḍaratu ghadan fī l-ʿāshira(h).
The lecture begins tomorrow at ten.
Key Takeaways
- Whole hours use feminine ordinals because الساعة is understood.
- Attach سـ directly to the imperfect for an explicit future assertion; a dated schedule can also use a plain indicative.
- Nonhuman plural محاضرات takes feminine-singular agreement, while human dual subjects distinguish VSO singular agreement from subject-first full agreement.
- Keep the day, numbered date, and clock time distinct: يوم الثلاثاء، الثاني عشر من مايو، في الرابعة.
