Short Biography of a Public-Domain Historical Figure

This original biography was written for the guide; no wording has been borrowed from a modern source. Its subject, the eleventh-century scholar Ibn al-Haytham, is a medieval historical figure, and the text presents widely established biographical facts in original wording. It models concise contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal/biographical) while describing his association with Basra and Cairo, his work on optics, his experimental reasoning, and his approximate dates.

Biography is not merely a list of past-tense verbs. Dates anchor a chronology, apposition identifies a person, iḍāfa packages names and works, and relative clauses distinguish defining facts from later commentary. English speakers must also resist repeating the subject pronoun before every verb: Arabic verb inflection and a stable topic often keep the reference clear. See Dates and Calendars, Proper Names and Titles, and Tense Sequence for the component systems.

Faithful translation

Ibn al-Haytham: Scholar of Light and Vision
Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham was born in Basra around 965 CE, and lived at a time when scientific and translation activity flourished. He studied mathematics, astronomy, and medicine, but his name became associated especially with optics.
Ibn al-Haytham moved to Cairo, where he spent an important part of his scholarly life. In The Book of Optics, his most famous work, he investigated the nature of light and the process of vision and discussed the views of earlier scholars. He did not merely describe phenomena; rather, he designed experiments that helped test his explanations.
Among the questions he studied was the passage of light through a small hole into a dark place, an idea connected with what is now called the camera obscura. After some of his works were translated into Latin, they influenced the study of light in later periods. Ibn al-Haytham died in Cairo around 1040, and his method based on observation and demonstration remained an important part of his scholarly legacy.

Opening identification: name, apposition, and date

ولد أبو علي الحسن بن الحسن بن الهيثم في البصرة نحو سنة تسعمائة وخمس وستين للميلاد.

wulida ʾabū ʿaliyyin al-ḥasanu bnu l-ḥasani bni l-haythami fī l-baṣrati naḥwa sanati tisʿimiʾatin wa-khamsin wa-sittīna li-l-mīlād.

Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham was born in Basra around 965 CE.

Passive ولد places the biographical subject, not an unnamed parent, at the center. أبو علي is a kunya and الحسن بن الحسن بن الهيثم is the personal-name chain in apposition: both expressions identify one person. The name ابن loses its initial hamza in connected pronunciation and appears as بن in this internal genealogical chain.

نحو marks approximation. That is historically responsible because medieval birth dates are not always transmitted with modern precision. Arabic prose commonly writes a year after سنة; the number can be printed in figures even when its spoken form is fully inflected. The label للميلاد establishes the calendar rather than asking readers to infer it.

عاش في زمن ازدهرت فيه حركة العلم والترجمة.

ʿāsha fī zamanin izdaharat fīhi ḥarakatu l-ʿilmi wa-t-tarjama(h).

He lived at a time in which scientific and translation activity flourished.

The null subject of عاش remains Ibn al-Haytham. Indefinite زمن takes an asyndetic descriptive clause; attached ـه in فيه resumes the temporal antecedent. The clause is not simply “then science flourished”: it turns the flourishing into a defining property of the period.

💡
A sound biography distinguishes exact information from approximation. Use نحو، قرابة، في أواخر when the evidence is approximate; grammatical confidence should never imply historical certainty.

Past sequencing builds a life rather than a list

درس الرياضيات والفلك والطب، غير أن اسمه ارتبط خصوصا بعلم البصريات.

darasa r-riyāḍiyyāti wa-l-falaka wa-ṭ-ṭibba, ghayra ʾanna smahu rtabata khuṣūṣan bi-ʿilmi l-baṣariyyāt.

He studied mathematics, astronomy, and medicine, but his name became associated especially with optics.

The perfects درس and ارتبط present bounded biographical facts. غير أن introduces a contrast between broad training and the field for which he became best known. The iḍāfa علم البصريات names the discipline “the science of optics”; البصريات is definite, while the first noun cannot take the article inside the iḍāfa.

انتقل ابن الهيثم إلى القاهرة، حيث أمضى جزءا مهما من حياته العلمية.

intaqala bnu l-haythami ʾilā l-qāhirati, ḥaythu ʾamḍā juzʾan muhimman min ḥayātihi l-ʿilmiyya(h).

Ibn al-Haytham moved to Cairo, where he spent an important part of his scholarly life.

The move is a new chronological stage, so the full name is repeated to re-establish the subject. حيث links the next event to Cairo without a gendered relative pronoun. In حياته العلمية, suffix ـه refers to Ibn al-Haytham, and العلمية agrees with the whole definite noun phrase.

💡
Arabic can leave a biographical subject unspoken across several verbs, but repeat the name when a new stage begins or when another possible human referent has intervened. Cohesion is more important than mechanically avoiding repetition.

ولم يكتف بوصف الظواهر، بل صمم تجارب تساعد على اختبار تفسيراته.

wa-lam yaktafi bi-waṣfi ẓ-ẓawāhiri, bal ṣammama tajāriba tusāʿidu ʿalā khtibāri tafsīrātih.

He did not merely describe phenomena; rather, he designed experiments that helped test his explanations.

لم + jussive negates a completed past tendency, and weak-final يكتفي loses its final ي in the jussive: لم يكتف. Correlative لم... بل... rejects an insufficient description and replaces it with a stronger claim. Indefinite تجارب takes the relative-like clause تساعد... without التي; its non-human plural reference triggers feminine-singular تساعد.

Iḍāfa identifies works, fields, and methods

في كتاب المناظر، وهو أشهر مؤلفاته، بحث في طبيعة الضوء وكيفية الإبصار.

fī kitābi l-manāẓiri, wa-huwa ʾashharu muʾallafātihi, baḥatha fī ṭabīʿati ḍ-ḍawʾi wa-kayfiyyati l-ʾibṣār.

In The Book of Optics, his most famous work, he investigated the nature of light and the process of vision.

كتاب المناظر is the title in iḍāfa form. The parenthetical nominal clause وهو أشهر مؤلفاته is appositional commentary: أشهر is an elative governing the partitive iḍāfa “the most famous of his works.” The sentence then uses two more iḍāfas, طبيعة الضوء and كيفية الإبصار, to package research topics densely.

English can pile nouns before nouns—light vision theory. Arabic iḍāfa unfolds the relation in the opposite direction, and only the final element normally carries the article. Long chains are efficient, but a biographer should split them when the attachment becomes ambiguous.

بقي منهجه القائم على الملاحظة والبرهان جزءا مهما من تراثه العلمي.

baqiya manhajuhu l-qāʾimu ʿalā l-mulāḥaẓati wa-l-burhāni juzʾan muhimman min turāthihi l-ʿilmiyy.

His method based on observation and demonstration remained an important part of his scholarly legacy.

Suffix ـه keeps the deceased scholar as possessor in منهجه and تراثه. Active participle القائم is a definite adjective modifying منهج, and its prepositional complement على الملاحظة والبرهان states the method's basis. بقي functions here as a copular verb, so جزءا is its accusative predicate.

Relative clauses connect a fact to its explanation

ومن المسائل التي درسها مرور الضوء عبر ثقب صغير إلى مكان مظلم.

wa-mina l-masāʾili llatī darasahā murūru ḍ-ḍawʾi ʿabra thuqbin ṣaghīrin ʾilā makānin muẓlim.

Among the questions he studied was the passage of light through a small hole into a dark place.

Fronted من المسائل creates a partitive frame. Feminine-singular التي agrees with non-human plural المسائل, and object suffix ـها on درسها resumes that antecedent. The delayed subject is the whole iḍāfa مرور الضوء. This marked ordering moves from a known research program to one illustrative question.

وهي الفكرة التي ترتبط بما يسمى اليوم الغرفة المظلمة.

wa-hiya l-fikratu llatī tartabiṭu bi-mā yusammā l-yawma l-ghurfata l-muẓlima(h).

It is the idea connected with what is now called the camera obscura.

Feminine هي refers to the preceding proposition as الفكرة, not to الضوء. Relative التي then agrees with explicit feminine singular الفكرة. Passive يسمى keeps the modern label in focus and avoids inventing an agent who named it.

Translation, influence, and cautious causality

وقد أثرت أعماله، بعد ترجمة بعضها إلى اللاتينية، في دراسة الضوء في عصور لاحقة.

wa-qad ʾaththarat ʾaʿmāluhu, baʿda tarjamati baʿḍihā ʾilā l-lātīniyya(h), fī dirāsati ḍ-ḍawʾi fī ʿuṣūrin lāḥiqa(h).

After some of his works were translated into Latin, they influenced the study of light in later periods.

قد + perfect presents a consequential historical result. Preverbal أثرت is feminine singular before the non-human plural subject أعماله. The verbal noun ترجمة compresses a passive circumstance, and بعضها cautiously says “some of them,” avoiding the unsupported claim that all his works followed the same transmission path.

توفي ابن الهيثم في القاهرة نحو سنة ألف وأربعين.

tuwuffiya bnu l-haythami fī l-qāhirati naḥwa sanati ʾalfin wa-ʾarbaʿīn.

Ibn al-Haytham died in Cairo around 1040.

Form V passive توفي is the conventional formal biographical verb “died.” Repeating نحو maintains the same epistemic caution as the opening date. The closing sentence then shifts from the end of the life to the continued relevance of the method.

Comprehension and production

  1. Which verbs advance the life chronologically, and which sentence pauses to describe a lasting method?
  2. Identify the two appositional expressions in the opening and the appositional parenthesis naming the best-known work.
  3. Find four iḍāfa phrases and state the relation each expresses: title, field, possession, or topic.
  4. Why does the biography use نحو with both dates?

For production, write a 120-word biography of a historical figure whose life is safely in the public domain, using your own wording. Include an approximate or exact date with its calendar, an appositional title, three perfect verbs in chronological order, one definite relative clause with a resumptive suffix, and one closing sentence about influence. Verify every historical claim before presenting it as fact.

Common Mistakes

Adding the article to the first noun of an iḍāfa

❌ في الكتاب المناظر شرح نظرية الضوء.

Incorrect for the title ‘The Book of Optics’—the first noun in the iḍāfa does not take ال.

✅ في كتاب المناظر بحث ابن الهيثم في طبيعة الضوء.

fī kitābi l-manāẓiri baḥatha bnu l-haythami fī ṭabīʿati ḍ-ḍawʾ.

In The Book of Optics, Ibn al-Haytham investigated the nature of light.

Omitting the resumptive pronoun inside a relative clause

❌ هذه هي المسائل التي درس العالم.

Incorrect for ‘the questions that the scholar studied’—the object relation must be resumed with ـها.

✅ هذه هي المسائل التي درسها العالم.

hādhihi hiya l-masāʾilu llatī darasahā l-ʿālim.

These are the questions that the scholar studied.

Treating an approximate date as exact

❌ ولد ابن الهيثم في اليوم الأول من سنة 965.

Historically unjustified precision—the widely cited birth year does not establish this exact day.

✅ ولد ابن الهيثم في البصرة نحو سنة تسعمائة وخمس وستين للميلاد.

wulida bnu l-haythami fī l-baṣrati naḥwa sanati tisʿimiʾatin wa-khamsin wa-sittīna li-l-mīlād.

Ibn al-Haytham was born in Basra around 965 CE.

Forcing full plural agreement before a non-human plural subject

❌ أثرتوا أعماله في علماء جاؤوا بعده.

Incorrect—before the non-human plural subject أعماله, the verb is feminine singular أثرت, not a human plural form.

✅ أثرت أعماله في دراسة الضوء في عصور لاحقة.

ʾaththarat ʾaʿmāluhu fī dirāsati ḍ-ḍawʾi fī ʿuṣūrin lāḥiqa(h).

His works influenced the study of light in later periods.

Key Takeaways

  • Perfect verbs and explicit temporal frames move a biography through successive stages.
  • Apposition lets a kunya, personal name, title, or explanatory noun phrase identify the same person or work.
  • Iḍāfa compactly expresses titles, disciplines, possession, and research topics; its first noun does not take ال.
  • Definite relative clauses use الذي/التي, and object or prepositional relations are often resumed by a suffix.
  • Historical prose should mark approximate dates and limited evidence explicitly rather than manufacturing precision.
