Dates, Years, and Centuries

Formal Arabic dates normally move from the smaller calendar unit to the larger one: day, month, year. The day is commonly expressed as an ordinal modifying an understood masculine يوم “day,” the month is a proper name, and the year is read as a cardinal number. Thus “15 September 2026” expands naturally as الخامس عشر من سبتمبر عام ألفين وستة وعشرين.

English speakers must manage two contrasts at once. English often writes month–day–year, while many Arabic contexts write day–month–year; English also uses an ordinal in speech but often hides it behind a cardinal-looking digit. Arabic makes the ordinal grammar explicit when the date is written out.

If forms such as الحادي والعشرون are unfamiliar, review Ordinal Numbers before applying them to calendar days and centuries.

The full date: day, month, year

A careful prose date commonly has this frame:

في + ordinal day + من + month + عام/سنة + cardinal year

The preposition في makes a simple ordinal day genitive. The ordinal agrees with understood masculine اليوم, so the fifth day is الخامس, not feminine الخامسة. The connector من before the month is common in fully expanded dates; concise headings and forms often omit it (formal administrative).

عقد الاجتماع في الخامس عشر من سبتمبر.

ʿuqida l-ijtimāʿu fī l-khāmisa ʿashara min sibtambar.

The meeting was held on the fifteenth of September.

تبدأ العطلة في الأول من مايو.

tabdaʾu l-ʿuṭlatu fī l-ʾawwali min māyū.

The vacation begins on the first of May.

وصلت الرسالة في الحادي والعشرين من مارس.

waṣalati r-risālatu fī l-ḥādī wa-l-ʿishrīna min māris.

The letter arrived on the twenty-first of March.

The compound ordinal الخامس عشر is built on fatḥ, so its form does not visibly change after في. In الحادي والعشرين, however, the decade clearly shows genitive ـين. “First” is irregular الأول, and its genitive ending is audible in careful connected reading.

💡
Treat the day as an ordinal adjective whose noun اليوم is omitted: في اليوم الخامس can shorten to في الخامس. The omitted noun remains masculine, so the ordinal does too.

Writing dates with digits

Both Arabic-Indic digits and Western digits occur in contemporary MSA. A common institutional display is ١٥ سبتمبر ٢٠٢٦ or 15 سبتمبر 2026. In a complete sentence, a digit in the day position is normally read as the corresponding ordinal, not as an isolated cardinal.

حددنا موعد التسليم في ٢٧ من أكتوبر عام ٢٠٢٦.

ḥaddadnā mawʿida t-taslīmi fī s-sābiʿi wa-l-ʿishrīna min ʾuktūbara ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-sittatin wa-ʿishrīn.

We set the delivery date for 27 October 2026.

Here ٢٧ is read السابع والعشرين after في. The year ٢٠٢٦ is read as a total, ألفين وستة وعشرين, in the oblique form required after عام in this time expression. The romanization writes out what the digits are pronounced as; the Arabic target preserves the natural document-style digits.

Slash notation such as ١٥/٩/٢٠٢٦ is compact but can be ambiguous across international systems. In most Arabic institutional contexts it is intended as day/month/year, but spelling the month—١٥ سبتمبر ٢٠٢٦—is safer whenever readers may expect month/day/year.

يظهر في الاستمارة التاريخ ١٥/٩/٢٠٢٦.

yaẓharu fī l-istimārati t-tārīkhu l-khāmisa ʿashara min sibtambara ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-sittatin wa-ʿishrīn.

The date 15/9/2026 appears on the form.

The internal place value of each numeral remains unchanged inside right-to-left text. ٢٠٢٦ is 2026, not 6202, and the written sequence ١٥/٩/٢٠٢٦ is not read by starting with the year simply because it appears visually at one edge of an RTL line.

Month names and regional vocabularies

The international set يناير، فبراير، مارس، أبريل، مايو، يونيو، يوليو، أغسطس، سبتمبر، أكتوبر، نوفمبر، ديسمبر is widespread. The Levant and Iraq commonly use forms such as كانون الثاني، شباط، آذار، نيسان (regional: Levant and Iraq) in formal media and government documents. Both sets fit the same date grammar.

يفتح التسجيل في الثاني من كانون الثاني.

yaftaḥu t-tasjīlu fī th-thānī min kānūna th-thānī.

Registration opens on the second of January. (regional: Levant and Iraq)

The first الثاني is the second day. The second is part of the regional month name كانون الثاني, literally “Second Kānūn.” Context and phrase structure prevent confusion.

Many borrowed month names are treated as diptote proper names in careful inflection, so genitive can appear with fatḥa: من أكتوبرَ. Natural pausal pronunciation often hides that ending. Regional and editorial practice varies in how completely case is marked in dates, so do not mistake the widespread omission of written vowel marks for a different date order.

Reading four-digit years as cardinal totals

Careful MSA normally reads a four-digit year as a complete cardinal total, not as two English-style pairs. In contemporary usage, the larger component commonly comes first, as in ألفين وستة وعشرين. The traditional unit-first ordering ستة وعشرين وألفين also remains grammatical and occurs in formal Arabic; it is a genuine alternative, not a reversal of the written digits. The larger-first models below give learners one consistent productive pattern:

YearAfter في عام
2000في عام ألفين
2012في عام ألفين واثني عشر
2021في عام ألفين وواحد وعشرين
2026في عام ألفين وستة وعشرين
1998في عام ألف وتسعمئة وثمانية وتسعين

افتتح المركز العلمي في عام ألفين واثني عشر.

ʾuftutiḥa l-markazu l-ʿilmiyyu fī ʿāmi ʾalfayni wa-thnay ʿashar.

The science center opened in 2012.

تأسست الشركة في عام ألف وتسعمئة وثمانية وتسعين.

taʾassasati sh-sharikatu fī ʿāmi ʾalfin wa-tisʿimiʾatin wa-thamāniyatin wa-tisʿīn.

The company was founded in 1998.

After في عام, the year expression is oblique. This is particularly visible in ألفين, اثني عشر, and decade ـين. When the year stands in a nominative role, the corresponding forms are ألفان، اثنا عشر، ـون. Ordinary newsreading may reduce short case endings, but careful grammatical structure still predicts them.

💡
For a year after في عام, check every visibly inflecting part: 2012 has oblique ألفين and اثني عشر; 2022 has ألفين واثنين وعشرين.

عام, سنة, and era labels

Both عام and سنة mean “year.” عام is extremely common before a numbered calendar year; سنة is equally grammatical and often appears in historical narration. The year number names the calendar year and is not followed by a plural “years.” By contrast, a duration such as “fifteen years” is an ordinary cardinal counted-noun phrase: خمسة عشر عاما or خمس عشرة سنة.

صدر القانون سنة ألفين وإحدى وعشرين ميلادية.

ṣadara l-qānūnu sanata ʾalfayni wa-ʾiḥdā wa-ʿishrīna mīlādiyya(h).

The law was issued in the Gregorian year 2021.

ميلادية agrees with feminine سنة. With عام, use masculine ميلادي. The abbreviation م is common for a Gregorian date and هـ for a Hijri date (formal administrative); in continuous prose, writing the label out is clearer.

وافق ذلك اليوم العاشر من محرم سنة ألف وأربعمئة وثمان وأربعين هجرية.

wāfaqa dhālika l-yawmu l-ʿāshira min muḥarramin sanata ʾalfin wa-ʾarbaʿimiʾatin wa-thamānin wa-ʾarbaʿīna hijriyya(h).

That day corresponded to the tenth of Muharram in the Hijri year 1448.

Centuries use ordinals

A century is not named with the raw hundreds of its years. Arabic uses القرن plus an agreeing ordinal: القرن العشرون “the twentieth century,” القرن الحادي والعشرون “the twenty-first century.” After في, the ordinal becomes genitive where its form can show case.

نعيش في القرن الحادي والعشرين.

naʿīshu fī l-qarni l-ḥādī wa-l-ʿishrīn.

We live in the twenty-first century.

تسارع التصنيع في القرن العشرين.

tasāraʿa t-taṣnīʿu fī l-qarni l-ʿishrīn.

Industrialization accelerated in the twentieth century.

Years 2001–2100 belong to the twenty-first century. The mismatch between the leading digits 20 and the ordinal 21 is the same one English has; it reflects that the first century covered years 1–100.

Common Mistakes

Copying English month–day order into Arabic prose

❌ وقعنا العقد في سبتمبر الخامس عشر.

Incorrect for the intended formal date — state the ordinal day before the month.

✅ وقعنا العقد في الخامس عشر من سبتمبر.

waqqaʿnā l-ʿaqda fī l-khāmisa ʿashara min sibtambar.

We signed the contract on the fifteenth of September.

Using cardinal polarity for an ordinal day

❌ يبدأ المؤتمر في الخامسة عشرة من مايو.

Incorrect — the omitted noun is masculine يوم, so use ordinal الخامس عشر.

✅ يبدأ المؤتمر في الخامس عشر من مايو.

yabdaʾu l-muʾtamaru fī l-khāmisa ʿashara min māyū.

The conference begins on the fifteenth of May.

Adding a plural noun to a named year

❌ افتتح الجسر عام ألفين وخمسة وعشرين سنوات.

Incorrect — a calendar year is named by the cardinal total; سنوات would turn it into an ill-formed duration.

✅ افتتح الجسر عام ألفين وخمسة وعشرين.

ʾuftutiḥa l-jisru ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-khamsatin wa-ʿishrīn.

The bridge opened in 2025.

Missing oblique forms inside a year

❌ افتتح المتحف في عام ألفان واثنا عشر.

Incorrect — after في عام, use oblique ألفين and اثني.

✅ افتتح المتحف في عام ألفين واثني عشر.

ʾuftutiḥa l-matḥafu fī ʿāmi ʾalfayni wa-thnay ʿashar.

The museum opened in 2012.

Reversing digits or misnaming the century

❌ العام ٢٠٢٦ في القرن العشرين.

Incorrect — ٢٠٢٦ is 2026, and it falls in the twenty-first century.

✅ العام ٢٠٢٦ في القرن الحادي والعشرين.

al-ʿāmu ʾalfāni wa-sittatun wa-ʿishrūna fī l-qarni l-ḥādī wa-l-ʿishrīn.

The year 2026 is in the twenty-first century.

Key Takeaways

  • Formal dates normally follow day–month–year order.
  • Read the day as a masculine ordinal agreeing with understood يوم; read the year as a cardinal total.
  • A digit can look cardinal while receiving an ordinal date reading: ٢٧ أكتوبر is “the twenty-seventh of October.”
  • After في عام, use oblique forms such as ألفين، اثني عشر، عشرين where the numeral permits a visible contrast.
  • Centuries use ordinals: years 2001–2100 belong to القرن الحادي والعشرين.
