Arabic-Indic and Western Digits

Contemporary Arabic uses two familiar digit sets: Arabic-Indic digits ٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩ and Western digits 0123456789. Both express the same values, and both occur in real formal MSA. The choice depends on region, publisher, institution, and subject matter—not on a different system of arithmetic.

The essential directional fact is that a multi-digit number keeps its internal left-to-right order even inside a right-to-left Arabic sentence. The sentence advances from right to left, but ٢٠٢٦ still contains 2, then 0, then 2, then 6.

The two shape sets

The Arabic name in the last column names the value, not the printed shape. Changing ٧ to 7 changes typography only.

The label “Western digits” is useful here, although these shapes are also historically known as Arabic numerals in English. The label “Arabic-Indic” distinguishes the forms used across much Arabic-script publishing. Persian uses a related but not identical digit set; for example, Persian ۴ and ۶ are not the standard Arabic-Indic ٤ and ٦.

Digits do not join

Arabic letters change shape when they join, but digits have no initial, medial, or final contextual forms. Each digit keeps one isolated shape. A digit also does not join to ا، د، ذ، ر، ز، و—or to any other letter.

Thus the digit in س٥م remains visually separate even though س and م are joinable letters. That artificial string is only a shape demonstration; normal prose usually separates a numeral from the following counted noun with a space.

Do not search for “medial ٥.” There is no such form. Position changes a digit’s place value, not its outline.

Read each numeral from left to right

Inside an Arabic line, the surrounding words and the numeral form directionally distinct runs. In رقم الطلب ٢٠٢٦, begin the Arabic phrase on the right, but read the number itself as 2-0-2-6.

These sentences differ only in digit shapes. Their Arabic grammar and numerical value are identical.

Order can itself distinguish two codes:

الرمز ٥٠.

The code is 50.

The second code has a leading zero. It is not another way to write fifty. This minimal contrast is especially important for room numbers, verification codes, dates, and identifiers.

Context decides which set looks natural

Arabic-Indic digits are common in Arabic-language government, education, news, and public signage in many countries (regional: Middle East). Western digits are common in technical writing, international commerce, web interfaces, and much North African publishing (regional: North Africa). Actual practice overlaps: an Arabic newspaper may use Arabic-Indic digits in prose but Western digits in a URL, stock ticker, or imported table.

Neither version is inherently more “correct MSA.” In edited (formal) work, follow the publication’s house style and remain consistent within a table or document. Do not mix ٢ and 2 inside one numeral unless you are quoting a source exactly.

Choose a digit set at the document or table level, not number by number. Consistency makes long columns auditable and prevents ٥/0-style confusions.

Decimal and percent marks

Fully Arabic typography may use the Arabic decimal separator ٫, thousands separator ٬, and percent sign ٪. Software and regional conventions also use a Western period, comma, or percent sign. These marks are not interchangeable in every locale, so preserve the intended value rather than mechanically replacing punctuation.

In the second example, the initial hamzat al-waṣl of اكتمل is pronounced because the word begins the utterance. The numeral remains a self-contained left-to-right run within the Arabic sentence.

Specialist mathematical typesetting (academic) may apply direction controls to equations, while Quranic verse-number ornaments (Quranic) are decorative textual markers rather than a third everyday digit grammar. Ordinary prose should rely on standard encoded digits and punctuation, not on look-alike ornaments.

Digit choice does not change number grammar

A glyph is not a grammatical form. Whether you write ٣ or 3, the spoken numeral still has gender and case behavior, and the counted noun still takes the form required by its number class. With three through ten, the numeral contrasts in grammatical gender with the singular counted noun, while that noun appears as a genitive plural.

على الطاولة ٣ كتب.

There are three books on the table.

Here كتاب “book” is masculine, so the fully inflected numeral is ثَلَاثَةُ thalāthatu, using the feminine-marked form; كُتُبٍ kutubin is a genitive plural, though its final ending is not heard at the sentence pause. Writing 3 كتب would require exactly the same grammar. The zero-to-ten page develops these number patterns; this page concerns the shapes that encode the values.

Stable spelling and fully specified audio

Digits are already explicit in the ordinary written skeleton, while Arabic words still omit most short vowels.

الرمز ١٢٣٤ وليس ٤٣٢١.

The code is 1234, not 4321.

Removing the vowel marks from the spoken form reproduces الرمز ١٢٣٤ وليس ٤٣٢١ exactly; the digits never change. This separation matters for audio: vocalization resolves the words, while the encoded numeral fixes the number. A reader should not reverse or respell the digit run to help the text-to-speech system.

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing a year because the sentence runs right to left. The digits retain left-to-right order.

Incorrect if you mean the year 2026 — the digit sequence has been reversed.

2. Reading Arabic-Indic ٥ as Western 0. Their resemblance in some fonts does not make their values equal.

3. Mixing digit sets inside one number. This may remain machine-readable, but it is poor edited style and easy to mischeck visually.

4. Using a singular noun after ٣ because English says “three book-s.” Arabic three through ten require a genitive plural counted noun.

5. Attaching a numeral directly to its noun. A normal numeral phrase needs a word space.

Incorrect spacing — the numeral and noun have been fused.
