This original interview was written for the guide; it is not a transcript of a real person. It models a concise career-profile interview in contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal/media). The interviewer asks open and yes–no questions, while the interviewee organizes reported facts with relative clauses and discourse markers rather than answering in isolated sentences.
An interview alternates two grammatical systems. Questions create information gaps; answers rebuild a coherent account with tense, reference, and evaluation. English speakers must especially notice that Arabic does not normally add a counterpart of auxiliary do, that a relative clause after a definite noun requires a relative pronoun, and that Arabic reported content does not mechanically backshift every tense. The underlying patterns are developed in Indirect Questions, Definite Relative Clauses, and Reported Speech.
The complete interview
Faithful translation
Interviewer: How did you choose to study environmental engineering?
Engineer: I studied science at school, and I was looking for a specialization that combines research with fieldwork. So I chose environmental engineering, which allows me to work on problems that directly affect people's lives.
Interviewer: What skills helped you at the beginning of your career?
Engineer: I think that the ability to explain data to non-specialists was the most important skill. I also learned that a successful project needs a team whose members listen to one another.
Interviewer: Did you face difficulty when you moved from university to work?
Engineer: Yes. At first, I thought that a good technical solution was sufficient by itself; but I discovered that the local community must participate in defining the problem itself. On the other hand, the training I received in the university laboratory helped me read results accurately.
Interviewer: What do you say to students who are thinking about this field?
Engineer: I advise them to study the fundamentals well and to look for training that connects knowledge with practice. In short, do not wait for your first job before you begin learning from others.
Questions without an English-style auxiliary
كيف اخترت دراسة الهندسة البيئية؟
kayfa khtarti dirāsata l-handasati l-bīʾiyya(h)?
How did you choose to study environmental engineering?
كيف occupies the requested-information slot and is followed directly by perfect اخترت. The feminine interviewee is identified by context; the unvocalized form اخترت does not display whether its ending is -ta or -ti, but the vocalized reading does. Arabic needs no equivalent of English did, and the lexical verb remains perfect rather than reverting to an infinitive.
ما المهارات التي ساعدتك في بداية عملك؟
mā l-mahārātu llatī sāʿadatki fī bidāyati ʿamaliki?
What skills helped you at the beginning of your career?
Here ما المهارات asks for a category of things. Definite plural المهارات is followed by التي because non-human plurals take feminine-singular agreement. The relative clause التي ساعدتك narrows the question to skills that actually helped; feminine-singular ساعدت agrees with the non-human antecedent.
هل واجهت صعوبة عند انتقالك من الجامعة إلى العمل؟
hal wājahti ṣuʿūbatan ʿinda ntiqāliki mina l-jāmiʿati ʾilā l-ʿamal?
Did you face difficulty when you moved from university to work?
هل turns the whole proposition into a neutral yes–no question. Again, it does not change verb order or insert an auxiliary. The iḍāfa انتقالك means “your transition”: the attached ـكِ identifies the female addressee and makes the verbal noun definite.
Relative clauses package background information
اخترت الهندسة البيئية، التي تتيح لي أن أعمل على مشكلات تمس حياة الناس مباشرة.
ikhtartu l-handasata l-bīʾiyyata, llatī tutīḥu lī ʾan ʾaʿmala ʿalā mushkilātin tamassu ḥayāta n-nāsi mubāsharatan.
I chose environmental engineering, which allows me to work on problems that directly affect people's lives.
Definite الهندسة البيئية requires relative التي. The comma and meaning make the clause supplementary: it comments on the already identified field rather than selecting one branch of engineering from several. By contrast, indefinite مشكلات takes a relative clause with no relative pronoun: مشكلات تمس... “problems that affect...” This definite–indefinite contrast has no direct visible equivalent in English, which uses that/which in both environments.
تعلمت أن المشروع الناجح يحتاج إلى فريق يصغي أفراده بعضهم إلى بعض.
taʿallamtu ʾanna l-mashrūʿa n-nājiḥa yaḥtāju ʾilā farīqin yuṣghī ʾafrāduhu baʿḍuhum ʾilā baʿḍ.
I learned that a successful project needs a team whose members listen to one another.
Indefinite فريق is modified by the asyndetic clause يصغي أفراده.... The suffix ـه in أفراده resumes the relation “its members,” roughly corresponding to English possessive whose. It is not optional decoration: it connects the members inside the clause back to فريق.
Reported facts and tense perspective
أرى أن القدرة على شرح البيانات لغير المتخصصين كانت أهم مهارة.
ʾarā ʾanna l-qudrata ʿalā sharḥi l-bayānāti li-ghayri l-mutakhaṣṣiṣīna kānat ʾahamma mahāra(h).
I think that the ability to explain data to non-specialists was the most important skill.
Present أرى marks the speaker's current evaluation. Inside the content clause, كانت places the assessment in the beginning stage of her career. Arabic chooses tense according to the time being described; it does not automatically shift a present fact into the past merely because the main reporting verb is past.
ظننت أن الحل التقني الجيد يكفي وحده؛ لكنني اكتشفت أن المجتمع المحلي يجب أن يشارك في تحديد المشكلة نفسها.
ẓanantu ʾanna l-ḥalla t-tiqniyya l-jayyida yakfī waḥdahu; lakinnanī ktashaftu ʾanna l-mujtamaʿa l-maḥalliyya yajibu ʾan yushārika fī taḥdīdi l-mushkilati nafsihā.
I thought that a good technical solution was enough by itself; but I discovered that the local community must participate in defining the problem itself.
The perfect pair ظننت... اكتشفت narrates a change of understanding. Yet يكفي and يجب remain imperfect because each expresses the proposition as understood at its own stage. Heavy لكنّ carries the attached first-person pronoun in لكنني and overtly reverses the first belief.
Discourse markers make the answer an argument
في البداية، ظننت أن الحل التقني الجيد يكفي وحده.
fī l-bidāya(h), ẓanantu ʾanna l-ḥalla t-tiqniyya l-jayyida yakfī waḥdah.
At first, I thought that a good technical solution was sufficient by itself.
في البداية creates a temporal frame that prepares readers for later revision. لكنني supplies that revision, and من جهة أخرى adds a second perspective rather than contradicting it. These markers are not ornamental translations of English connectors; they tell the listener how the next proposition relates to the preceding one.
ومن جهة أخرى، ساعدني التدريب الذي تلقيته في مختبر الجامعة على قراءة النتائج بدقة.
wa-min jihatin ʾukhrā, sāʿadanī t-tadrību lladhī talaqqaytuhu fī mukhtabari l-jāmiʿati ʿalā qirāʾati n-natāʾiji bi-diqqa(h).
On the other hand, the training I received in the university laboratory helped me read the results accurately.
Masculine relative الذي agrees with التدريب. The object suffix ـه on تلقيته resumes the antecedent because “I received it” contains an object gap. English leaves that relation unpronounced after training that I received; Arabic normally marks it with the resumptive pronoun.
باختصار، لا تنتظروا الوظيفة الأولى كي تبدؤوا التعلم من الآخرين.
bi-khtiṣārin, lā tantaẓirū l-waẓīfata l-ʾūlā kay tabdaʾū t-taʿalluma mina l-ʾākharīn.
In short, do not wait for your first job before you begin learning from others.
باختصار signals a concluding synthesis. The switch to masculine-plural لا تنتظروا addresses the mixed student audience by the conventional unmarked plural of formal MSA. A publication seeking explicit gender inclusion may repeat both forms or restructure impersonally, but it should do so deliberately.
Comprehension and production
- Which question asks for manner, which asks for a thing, and which expects yes or no?
- Find one definite relative clause, one indefinite relative clause, and one resumptive object pronoun.
- What belief changes between ظننت and اكتشفت?
- Explain the different jobs of لذلك، لكنني، من جهة أخرى، باختصار.
For production, write a six-turn interview with a person describing a course and a first job. Include كيف, ما...الذي/التي, and هل; one answer with أرى أن; one definite and one indefinite relative clause; and three discourse markers that show cause, contrast, and conclusion.
Common Mistakes
Copying English did into the Arabic question
❌ هل فعلت اخترت دراسة الهندسة؟
Incorrect—Arabic هل already marks the yes–no question, and the perfect lexical verb does not need a form of فعل as an auxiliary.
✅ هل اخترت دراسة الهندسة بعد المدرسة؟
hali khtarta dirāsata l-handasati baʿda l-madrasa(h)?
Did you choose to study engineering after school?
Omitting the relative pronoun after a definite antecedent
❌ التدريب تلقيته في الجامعة ساعدني كثيرا.
Incorrect in the intended standard relative construction—the definite antecedent التدريب requires الذي.
✅ التدريب الذي تلقيته في الجامعة ساعدني كثيرا.
at-tadrību lladhī talaqqaytuhu fī l-jāmiʿati sāʿadanī kathīran.
The training that I received at the university helped me greatly.
Dropping the resumptive object
❌ هذا هو المشروع الذي اخترت للفريق.
Incorrect for ‘the project that I chose for the team’—the relative clause needs an object pronoun referring back to المشروع.
✅ هذا هو المشروع الذي اخترته للفريق.
hādhā huwa l-mashrūʿu lladhī khtartuhu li-l-farīq.
This is the project that I chose for the team.
Treating discourse markers as interchangeable decoration
❌ أحب العمل الميداني؛ لذلك أفضل البحث النظري وحده.
Incoherent as written—لذلك claims that preferring theory alone is the result of liking fieldwork.
✅ أحب العمل الميداني؛ لكنني أقدر أهمية البحث النظري أيضا.
ʾuḥibbu l-ʿamala l-maydāniyya; lakinnanī ʾuqaddiru ʾahammiyyata l-baḥthi n-naẓariyyi ʾayḍan.
I like fieldwork, but I also appreciate the importance of theoretical research.
Key Takeaways
- Question words and هل work directly with the Arabic clause; there is no English-style do-support.
- A definite antecedent takes الذي/التي, while an indefinite antecedent is commonly followed directly by its descriptive clause.
- Resumptive suffixes such as ـه preserve a syntactic relation inside many relative clauses.
- Reported content keeps the tense appropriate to its own time frame rather than undergoing automatic English-style backshift.
- Discourse markers turn successive answers into a structured account of cause, contrast, addition, and conclusion.
