Dialogue: Asking for Directions

A useful direction is a miniature route, not a vocabulary list: it establishes a destination, orders several actions, and keeps landmarks identifiable as the listener moves. The original exchange below uses contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal/cross-regional). Street conversations are normally dialectal (regional), but these MSA forms are appropriate at a transport desk, in a formal visitor setting, or between speakers who do not share a local dialect.

The central contrast is spatial. إلى gives a goal, في gives a location within an area, and على can present a road as the surface or route along which movement continues. English to, in, and on provide useful first approximations, but the Arabic scene determines the choice.

The complete dialogue

This is an original learning dialogue rather than a published quotation.

العابر: عفوا، أين محطة الحافلات؟

al-ʿābiru: ʿafwan, ʾayna maḥaṭṭatu l-ḥāfilāti?

Passerby: Excuse me, where is the bus station?

الموظف: هي قرب هذا البنك، لكنها ليست في هذا الشارع.

al-muwaẓẓafu: hiya qurba hādhā l-banki, lakinnahā laysat fī hādhā sh-shāriʿ.

Employee: It is near this bank, but it is not on this street.

العابر: كيف أصل إليها؟

al-ʿābiru: kayfa ʾaṣilu ʾilayhā?

Passerby: How do I get to it?

الموظف: امش إلى إشارة المرور، ثم انعطف يمينا.

al-muwaẓẓafu: ʾimshi ʾilā ʾishārati l-murūri, thumma nʿaṭif yamīnan.

Employee: Walk to the traffic light, then turn right.

العابر: هل أعبر الجسر؟

al-ʿābiru: hal ʾaʿburu l-jisra?

Passerby: Do I cross the bridge?

الموظف: نعم، اعبره، ثم سر على هذا الطريق حتى ترى المكتبة.

al-muwaẓẓafu: naʿam, ʾuʿburhu, thumma sir ʿalā hādhā ṭ-ṭarīqi ḥattā tarā l-maktaba(h).

Employee: Yes, cross it, then continue along this road until you see the library.

العابر: وأين المحطة من المكتبة؟

al-ʿābiru: wa-ʾayna l-maḥaṭṭatu mina l-maktabati?

Passerby: And where is the station in relation to the library?

الموظف: المحطة أمام المكتبة، وعلى بابها لوحة زرقاء.

al-muwaẓẓafu: al-maḥaṭṭatu ʾamāma l-maktabati, wa-ʿalā bābihā lawḥatun zarqāʾ.

Employee: The station is in front of the library, and there is a blue sign on its door.

العابر: شكرا جزيلا.

al-ʿābiru: shukran jazīlan.

Passerby: Thank you very much.

Line-by-line grammar

أين asks for the missing location

أين محطة الحافلات؟ is a verbless present question. أين occupies the location slot, and محطة الحافلات is a definite iḍāfa, “the bus station.” The first noun محطة has no article; the definite second term makes the whole chain definite. English needs is, but Arabic has no present copula here.

The employee immediately uses feminine هي، ـها because محطة is grammatically feminine. لكنها keeps that reference alive across a clause boundary. This is cohesion: the listener does not have to guess whether “it” means the bank, street, or station.

Demonstratives form one noun phrase

Near demonstratives precede an ordinary definite noun: هذا البنك، هذا الشارع، هذا الطريق. The demonstrative agrees with the noun's grammatical gender and number. A feminine landmark would use هذه: هذه المكتبة. See near demonstratives.

💡
A demonstrative does not replace the definite article in هذا الطريق. Think “this + the-road” as one Arabic noun phrase, even though English says only “this road.”

Imperatives turn the map into a sequence

The route is organized by masculine-singular imperatives: امش، انعطف، اعبر، سر. Their initial vowels are not interchangeable: امش comes from final-weak مشى / يمشي, سر is the shortened hollow command from سار / يسير, and انعطف is a derived-form command. Learn the actual verb, not a guessed English-to-Arabic template. The command inventory is explained on basic imperatives.

ثم divides a potentially confusing long coordination into ordered stages. حتى ترى المكتبة supplies a visible endpoint: continue until the library comes into view. The subject “you” remains unspoken because the verb forms identify a masculine singular addressee. To one woman, use امشي، انعطفي، اعبري، سيري.

إلى, في, and على build different relations

In أصل إليها, إلى identifies the station as a goal, and feminine ـها resumes it. في هذا الشارع locates something within the street as an address area; English idiom happens to prefer on this street. على هذا الطريق construes the road as the route along which the traveler continues, while على بابها gives surface attachment. Review the endpoint logic of إلى and the support network of على.

The final clause fronts على بابها and delays the indefinite subject لوحة زرقاء. This presentational order naturally introduces the sign as new information. It is not an English-style resumptive error: ـها is required inside “on its door” and refers back to the station.

Comprehension and production practice

For comprehension, identify the three landmarks in order. What does ـها refer to in إليها, لكنها, and بابها? Why is على appropriate both with a road and with a door even though the physical relations differ?

For production, replace the station with الصيدلية “the pharmacy” and the bank with المسجد “the mosque.” Change every pronoun that refers to the destination, but keep masculine هذا with المسجد. Then give the route to one woman and make all four commands feminine singular.

Common Mistakes

Omitting the article after a demonstrative

❌ سر على هذا طريق.

Incorrect—an ordinary noun identified by a demonstrative is definite and takes الـ.

✅ سر على هذا الطريق.

sir ʿalā hādhā ṭ-ṭarīq.

Continue along this road.

Using a location preposition for a destination

❌ امش في إشارة المرور.

Incorrect for ‘walk to’—في locates an action within the traffic light rather than making it the endpoint.

✅ امش إلى إشارة المرور.

ʾimshi ʾilā ʾishārati l-murūr.

Walk to the traffic light.

Copying the masculine command when addressing a woman

❌ انعطف يسارا يا مريم.

Incorrect—one female addressee requires the feminine imperative انعطفي.

✅ انعطفي يسارا يا مريم.

ʾinʿaṭifī yasāran yā maryam.

Turn left, Maryam.

Stranding إلى after a relative or question-like frame

❌ هذه هي المحطة التي أذهب إلى.

Incorrect—formal Arabic keeps the preposition with a resumptive pronoun.

✅ هذه هي المحطة التي أذهب إليها.

hādhihi hiya l-maḥaṭṭatu llatī ʾadhhabu ʾilayhā.

This is the station that I am going to.

Key Takeaways

  • Use أين in a present verbless location question; do not insert a present copula from English.
  • إلى marks the goal, في locates within a setting, and على can mark a route or surface support.
  • Match demonstratives, pronouns, and commands to the gender and number of their noun or addressee.
  • Break a route into ordered clauses with ثم, and use attached pronouns to maintain clear reference across those clauses.
