The spatial prototype of على (ʿalā) is support or contact with a surface: a book rests على الطاولة “on the table,” or a notice hangs على الباب “on the door.” Modern Standard Arabic extends that relation far beyond physical space. A duty can rest على someone, an argument can depend على evidence, and اعتراض على سياسة is “an objection to a policy.” English consequently translates على as on, over, upon, against, for, at, or with no preposition at all.
Treat these uses as a connected network, not as unrelated meanings of “on.” على governs a genitive noun, and before a pronoun suffix its stem changes from عَلَى to عَلَيْـ: عليه، عليها، عليّ. The unvocalized first-person form علي is read عَلَيَّ ʿalayya in this construction, not as the name عَلِيّ ʿaliyy.
The complete cross-preposition paradigm appears on Pronoun Suffixes after Prepositions; this page explains the forms specific to على independently.
Physical support and surface contact
Use على when something is supported by or in contact with a surface. A picture can be على الحائط “on the wall,” while a cup can be على الرف “on the shelf.” Mere vertical separation normally calls for فوق: a light hanging فوق الباب is “above the door,” not supported by it. By contrast, في places something within a container or setting.
وضعت المفاتيح على الطاولة قرب النافذة.
waḍaʿtu l-mafātīḥa ʿalā ṭ-ṭāwilati qurba n-nāfidha.
I put the keys on the table near the window.
علقت الخريطة على الحائط المقابل للباب.
ʿallaqtu l-kharīṭata ʿalā l-ḥāʾiṭi l-muqābili lil-bāb.
I hung the map on the wall opposite the door.
حلقت الطائرة على ارتفاع منخفض فوق الساحل.
ḥallaqati ṭ-ṭāʾiratu ʿalā rtifāʿin munkhafiḍin fawqa s-sāḥil.
The aircraft flew at a low altitude over the coast.
The last example contains the fixed frame على ارتفاع “at an altitude.” The aircraft is not resting on a height; the abstract scale provides its reference level. This is a typical bridge from spatial support to measurement.
When the landmark is an iḍāfa, على governs its first noun, while the second noun is genitive because of the iḍāfa: على سطحِ المكتبِ “on the surface of the desk.”
تركت الملاحظة على سطح مكتب المدير.
taraktu l-mulāḥaẓata ʿalā saṭḥi maktabi l-mudīr.
I left the note on the surface of the director's desk.
Time spans and rates
In temporal expressions, على often presents time as an extent across which something is distributed or maintained. على مدى means “over the course of,” and على مدار means “throughout” a recurring cycle. These are (formal) collocations, frequent in news, reports, and institutional writing.
راقب الباحثون جودة الهواء على مدى ثلاثة أشهر.
rāqaba l-bāḥithūna jawdata l-hawāʾi ʿalā madā thalāthati ʾashhur.
The researchers monitored air quality over a period of three months. (Academic.)
تعمل خدمة الطوارئ على مدار الساعة.
taʿmalu khidmatu ṭ-ṭawāriʾi ʿalā madāri s-sāʿa.
The emergency service operates around the clock. (Formal.)
For a single point on a clock, formal MSA normally uses في الساعة التاسعة “at nine,” not على الساعة التاسعة. The expression على الفور “immediately” is another fixed time-related phrase, not a productive rule that على marks every English at.
Obligation and responsibility: something rests on someone
Arabic can place a duty “on” its bearer. In على + noun/pronoun + أنْ + subjunctive, the prepositional phrase is a predicate meaning “it is incumbent on ….” This is common in neutral and formal MSA; it does not require a separate verb meaning must.
علي أن أرسل الطلب قبل نهاية اليوم.
ʿalayya ʾan ʾursila ṭ-ṭalaba qabla nihāyati l-yawm.
I have to send the application before the end of the day.
على الشركة أن توضح الرسوم للزبائن مسبقا.
ʿalā sh-sharikati ʾan tuwaḍḍiḥa r-rusūma liz-zabāʾini musbaqan.
The company must explain the fees to customers in advance. (Formal.)
تقع مسؤولية الصيانة على مالك المبنى.
taqaʿu masʾūliyyatu ṣ-ṣiyānati ʿalā māliki l-mabnā.
Responsibility for maintenance falls to the building owner. (Formal.)
The genitive remains real even when the phrase is a predicate: على الشركةِ, not على الشركةُ. English word order can obscure this because English says “the company must …,” whereas Arabic literally establishes an obligation resting on the company.
Dependence, focus, and directed attitudes
Many verbs and adjectives select على. The complement is not freely interchangeable with another preposition: learn اعتمد على “relied on,” حافظ على “maintained/preserved,” حصل على “obtained,” ركز على “focused on,” وافق على “approved/agreed to,” and قادر على “capable of.”
يعتمد القرار على نتائج الفحص النهائي.
yaʿtamidu l-qarāru ʿalā natāʾiji l-faḥṣi n-nihāʾiyy.
The decision depends on the results of the final inspection.
حافظ الفريق على هدوئه رغم ضغط الوقت.
ḥāfaẓa l-farīqu ʿalā hudūʾihi raghma ḍaghṭi l-waqt.
The team remained calm despite the time pressure. (Arabic literally uses حافظ على, ‘preserved.’)
وافقت اللجنة على نشر النتائج كاملة.
wāfaqati l-lajnatu ʿalā nashri n-natāʾiji kāmila.
The committee approved publishing the results in full. (Formal; English uses a direct object.)
Directed negative actions likewise use على: اعترض على “objected to,” احتج على “protested against,” اعتدى على “attacked/assaulted,” and قسا على “treated harshly.” The same directional relation can therefore yield English to with approval and against with protest.
اعترض السكان على إغلاق الطريق من دون إشعار مسبق.
iʿtaraḍa s-sukkānu ʿalā ʾighlāqi ṭ-ṭarīqi min dūni ʾishʿārin musbaq.
Residents objected to the road closure without prior notice.
This is a government contrast, not a choice dictated by English: وافق على الخطة “approved the plan,” but ناقش الخطة “discussed the plan” takes a direct object; تحدث عن الخطة “spoke about the plan” uses عن.
ناقشنا الخطة ثم وافقنا عليها بعد تعديل بندين.
nāqashnā l-khuṭṭata thumma wāfaqnā ʿalayhā baʿda taʿdīli bandayn.
We discussed the plan and then approved it after amending two clauses. (Direct object ناقش; وافق على.)
Formal collocations and idioms
Several extremely frequent expressions must be learned whole. بناء على “based on,” علاوة على “in addition to,” and على الرغم من “despite” do not preserve an obvious English on in every translation. بناءً على is (formal) and especially common in administrative reasoning.
بناء على توصية اللجنة، مددت الوزارة فترة التسجيل.
bināʾan ʿalā tawṣiyati l-lajnati, maddadati l-wizāratu fatrata t-tasjīl.
On the committee's recommendation, the ministry extended the registration period. (Formal.)
على الرغم من تأخر الرحلة، وصلنا قبل بدء الاجتماع.
ʿalā r-raghmi min taʾakhkhuri r-riḥlati, waṣalnā qabla badʾi l-ijtimāʿ.
Despite the flight delay, we arrived before the meeting began.
Attached pronouns: عليه, عليها, and عليّ
Before a suffix, على has the stem عَلَيْـ. The third-person masculine form is عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi when connected and may be عَلَيْهْ ʿalayh at pause. First-person عَلَيَّ ʿalayya contains a doubled y.
| Complement | Fully vocalized form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| me | عَلَيَّ | ʿalayya |
| you (m.sg.) | عَلَيْكَ | ʿalayka |
| you (f.sg.) | عَلَيْكِ | ʿalayki |
| him/it | عَلَيْهِ | ʿalayhi |
| her/it | عَلَيْهَا | ʿalayhā |
| us | عَلَيْنَا | ʿalaynā |
| them (m.) | عَلَيْهِمْ | ʿalayhim |
هذا هو التقرير الذي اعتمدت عليه اللجنة.
hādhā huwa t-taqrīru lladhī ʿtamadat ʿalayhi l-lajna.
This is the report on which the committee relied.
Formal Arabic keeps the preposition beside a resumptive suffix in a relative clause. English can strand on at the end—“the report the committee relied on”—but اعتمدت على cannot be left without its complement.
Common Mistakes
Copying an English preposition
❌ تحدثنا على آثار القرار.
Incorrect—formal MSA uses تحدث عن for speaking about a topic.
✅ تحدثنا عن آثار القرار ثم علقنا عليها.
taḥaddathnā ʿan ʾāthāri l-qarāri thumma ʿallaqnā ʿalayhā.
We discussed the effects of the decision and then commented on them.
Giving the governed noun nominative case
❌ الكتاب على الطاولة، مع نطق الطاولة بالضمة.
Incorrect in fully inflected Arabic—على governs genitive الطاولةِ.
✅ الكتاب على الطاولة بجانب الحاسوب.
al-kitābu ʿalā ṭ-ṭāwilati bijānibi l-ḥāsūb.
The book is on the table beside the computer.
Stranding على
❌ هذه هي القاعدة التي اعتمدنا على.
Incorrect—formal Arabic requires a resumptive suffix after the preposition.
✅ هذه هي القاعدة التي اعتمدنا عليها في الحساب.
hādhihi hiya l-qāʿidatu llatī ʿtamadnā ʿalayhā fī l-ḥisāb.
This is the rule on which we relied in the calculation.
Detaching a clitic elsewhere in the same construction
❌ حصلت على نسخة ل المدير.
Incorrect—one-letter لـ attaches directly to المدير: للمدير.
✅ حصلت على نسخة للمدير.
ḥaṣaltu ʿalā nuskhatin lil-mudīr.
I obtained a copy for the director.
Choosing إلى or لـ merely because English says “to”
❌ اعترض السكان إلى القرار.
Incorrect—اعترض governs على, even though English says ‘objected to.’
✅ اعترض السكان على القرار رسميا.
iʿtaraḍa s-sukkānu ʿalā l-qarāri rasmiyyan.
The residents formally objected to the decision.
Key Takeaways
- على grows from physical support or position above into measurement, dependence, obligation, focus, and directed attitudes.
- It governs the genitive; an internal iḍāfa keeps its own chain of genitives.
- Before suffixes, use عليـ: عليه، عليها، عليّ (ʿalayhi, ʿalayhā, ʿalayya).
- Learn predicate government such as اعتمد على، وافق على، اعترض على instead of translating English prepositions word for word.
