Questions & Answers about Özetle, internet basılı sözlükleri atıl ve çağdışı kıldı.
Why use kıldı here instead of yaptı?
The verb kılmak is a formal auxiliary meaning "to render" or "to put into a state." While yapmak is used for physically making or doing something, kılmak is used when a subject causes an object to take on a specific adjective or state (in this case, redundant and outdated). It sounds much more formal and abstract, exactly like "rendered" in English.
Why is the accusative suffix on sözlükleri and not at the end of the phrase right before the verb?
The specific direct object receiving the action is basılı sözlükleri (the printed dictionaries), so it gets the accusative -i. The adjectives atıl (redundant) and çağdışı (outdated) are object complements describing the new state of the dictionaries, not part of the noun phrase being acted upon.
How is the word çağdışı formed?
It is a noun compound acting as an adjective. Çağ means "age" or "era", and dış means "outside". Combined with the compound marker (possessive suffix) -ı, it literally translates to "outside of its era", which is how Turkish expresses "outdated" or "anachronistic".
What is the root of basılı?
The root is the verb basmak, which means "to press" or "to print". The suffix -ılı attaches to verb roots to form an adjective that describes a continuous state resulting from an action. It functions very similarly to the "-ed" ending in the English word "printed".
