Questions & Answers about Bahtınız açık ola, yüzünüz hep güle.
Why are the verbs in the 3rd person singular (ola, güle) when the sentence translates to 'your destinies' and 'your faces'?
The verbs agree with the grammatical subjects of the clauses, which are bahtınız (your destiny) and yüzünüz (your face). Because "destiny" and "face" are grammatically "it" (3rd person singular), the verbs take the 3rd person singular optative suffixes -a and -e.
How do the suffixes in 'ola' and 'güle' work to form the optative mood?
To form the 3rd person singular optative (which expresses a wish, hope, or desire), you simply add -a or -e to the verb stem, depending on vowel harmony. Here, ol (to be) becomes ola (may it be), and gül (to smile) becomes güle (may it smile).
Could I use the 3rd person imperative ('olsun', 'gülsün') instead of the optative here?
Yes, you could say Bahtınız açık olsun, yüzünüz hep gülsün. In everyday modern Turkish, the 3rd person imperative is actually much more common for making wishes. Using the older optative forms (ola, güle) gives the sentence a traditional, poetic, or formal "blessing" tone.
What is the literal meaning of 'bahtınız açık ola'?
Literally, it means "may your luck/destiny be open". The phrase bahtı açık olmak is a common idiom used to wish someone a bright, successful future with no closed doors or obstacles in their way.
