Questions & Answers about Bu teknikler ustanın uğruna geliştirildi.
Why does usta take the genitive suffix -nın before uğruna?
Uğruna is structurally a possessed noun in the dative case. Because it forms a possessive compound (literally "to the sake of the master"), the noun preceding it must take the genitive case. This is why it is ustanın uğruna rather than just usta uğruna.
Where does the word uğruna come from, and why did it lose a vowel?
It comes from the noun uğur, which means "luck," "fortune," or "good omen." When the 3rd person possessive suffix -u is added, the word undergoes vowel omission (a common rule for certain two-syllable body parts and abstract nouns), becoming uğru. Then, the buffer consonant -n- and the dative suffix -a are added, resulting in uğruna.
Could I just say "usta için" instead of "ustanın uğruna"?
Grammatically yes, but the nuance is quite different. İçin simply means "for." Uğruna is much stronger; it carries a tone of deep dedication, sacrifice, or devotion. Translating it as "for the sake of" captures how it elevates the sentence to sound like a noble tribute to the master.
