For the Sake of (uğruna)
To talk about extreme dedication, making sacrifices, or fighting "for the sake of" a goal or person, use the postposition uğruna.
Before adding uğruna, the noun or pronoun it refers to must take the genitive case suffix (-ın, -in, -un, -ün after consonants; -nın, -nin, -nun, -nün after vowels).
| We are fighting for the sake of the team. | Takımın uğruna dövüşüyoruz. |
If the noun ends in a hard consonant like k, you must apply consonant mutation (changing k to ğ) before adding the genitive suffix.
| The master trains every day for the sake of the championship. | Usta, şampiyonluğun uğruna her gün antrenman yapıyor. |
| For the sake of this dedication, you must throw a thousand kicks. | Bu adanmışlığın uğruna bin tekme atmak zorundasın. |
When a noun already has a possessive suffix (such as "his honor"), simply attach the genitive suffix directly after the possessive suffix, followed by uğruna.
| For the sake of his honor, he is not quitting this fight. | O, şerefinin uğruna bu dövüşü bırakmıyor. |
Attaining Goals in Martial Arts
The discipline of martial arts requires both physical effort and mental focus. To talk about "attaining" or "reaching" a high-level abstract goal like a title or enlightenment, use the verb kavuşmak. This verb requires the preceding noun to take the dative case (-a or -e).
| The master attained enlightenment, calmed down, and became invincible. | Usta aydınlanmaya kavuştu, sakinleşti ve yenilmez oldu. |
| The first fight is over, but he has not yet attained the title. | Birinci dövüş bitti ama o henüz unvana kavuşmadı. |
You can combine these concepts to describe the ultimate path of a fighter.
| The shy student fought for the sake of his honor and became an invincible champion. | Çekingen öğrenci şerefinin uğruna dövüştü ve yenilmez bir şampiyon oldu. |
