Questions & Answers about Titiz mühendis her zaman küçük detaylarda takılı kalıyor.
Why do we use the locative case (detaylarda) here instead of the dative case for 'gets stuck ON'?
English uses 'on', which might tempt you to use the dative case (detaylara) to show direction. However, the Turkish compound verb takılı kalmak (to remain stuck / to fixate) requires the locative case (-DA) because it describes the static state of existing or remaining in a stuck position, rather than the motion of getting stuck in the first place.
What is the exact grammatical structure of the verb phrase takılı kalıyor?
It is a compound made of the adjective takılı (attached, stuck) and the auxiliary verb kalmak (to remain). Interestingly, if you just used the base verb takılmak (to get stuck / to trip up), it would take the dative case (detaylara takılıyor). Using kalmak shifts the grammar from an action to a continuous state, which triggers the locative case instead.
Could we move her zaman (always) to a different part of the sentence?
Yes, Turkish word order is very flexible, but moving it changes the emphasis. If you say Titiz mühendis küçük detaylarda her zaman takılı kalıyor, it places more emphasis on the fact that it happens her zaman by putting it immediately before the verb. As currently written, the emphasis is heavily on the küçük detaylarda (the small details).
Does the word titiz have a positive or negative connotation?
