Questions & Answers about Önyargı yerine hoşgörü göstermek zorundayız.
Why does yerine follow önyargı directly without a genitive suffix, rather than önyargının yerine?
When yerine means "instead of," it acts as a postposition and takes a bare noun if the concept is general and indefinite. Since we are talking about prejudice in general, önyargı yerine is correct. You would only use the genitive (önyargının yerine) if referring to a specific, previously discussed prejudice.
How are the abstract nouns önyargı and hoşgörü constructed?
Both are compound nouns. Önyargı combines ön (pre/front) and yargı (judgment). Hoşgörü combines hoş (pleasant/nice) and the root of görmek (to see), literally meaning "seeing pleasantly" (tolerance). You will encounter many abstract B2 vocabulary words built this way, such as öngörü (foresight) and sağduyu (common sense).
Since this lesson focuses on verbs of attitude like benimsemek or önemsemek, could we use an -(I)msEmEk verb here instead of hoşgörü göstermek?
You can't directly turn hoşgörü into an -(I)msEmEk verb, but you can definitely use a target verb like benimsemek (to adopt/internalize) to express a very similar attitude! For example, Hoşgörüyü benimsemek zorundayız means "We have to internalize tolerance."
