Questions & Answers about İki rotanın çakıştığını pilotlar fark etmedi mi?
Why does the word rota take the genitive suffix -nın here to become rotanın?
This is the core of how Turkish builds embedded "that" clauses. The phrase "the two routes intersected" is turned into a noun phrase: literally, "the two routes' intersecting." Because iki rota is the logical subject of this embedded clause, it takes the genitive suffix -nın, and the embedded verb takes the matching possessive suffix -ı (seen in çakıştığını).
Can you break down the stack of suffixes on çakıştığını?
Sure! The root is çakış- (to intersect or collide). We add -tık (the nominalizing suffix for past or ongoing actions, which softens to -tığ- here). Next is -ı (the 3rd-person possessive suffix, linking back to rotanın). Then comes the buffer letter -n-, and finally the accusative suffix -ı, which marks the entire clause as the direct object of the main verb.
What dictates that the embedded clause must end in the accusative case?
The main verb dictates the case of its objects. The compound verb fark etmek (to notice/realize) takes a definite direct object in the accusative case. Since the pilots didn't notice a specific thing (the intersecting of these two routes), the entire embedded clause receives the accusative suffix.
Why is the main subject pilotlar placed after the embedded clause instead of at the beginning of the sentence?
