Learn Turkish: Taraftarlar takımın şampiyon olacağını iddia ediyor. - The fans claim the team will become champion.

Verbs like iddia etmek (to claim) or söylemek (to tell) require a subordinate clause rather than an independent tense. You build this with the future object participle -(y)AcAk. If you wanted to report the same rumor without explicitly stating 'The fans claim...', you would use the inferential future directly on the main verb: Takım şampiyon olacakmış (Apparently the team will become champion).

Why does takım have the genitive suffix -ın?

In Turkish subordinate clauses (like 'that the team will become champion'), the subject of the clause takes the genitive case, and the verb acts like a possessed noun. Literally, it translates to 'the fans claim the team's future-becoming-champion.'

Can you break down the suffixes on olacağını?

It comes from the verb olmak (to be/become). We add the future participle -acak (the 'k' softens to 'ğ'), then the 3rd-person singular possessive -ı (matching 'the team's'), a buffer -n-, and finally the accusative case -ı (because this whole phrase is the direct object of iddia ediyor).

Is it possible to use a direct quote here without changing the verb into a noun phrase?
