Why is the past tense suffix -dü instead of -di?
The verb root is öl- (to die). According to the 4-way vowel harmony rules, if the last vowel in a word is ö or ü, the suffix vowel must be ü. That is why we use -dü to make öldü.
Why isn't there another suffix on the verb to show that "it" (the tree) died?
