Questions & Answers about Bu cevap doğru değil.
The lesson is about yok (there is not), so why are we using değil in this sentence?
yok is used to say that something does not exist or that you do not have something. değil is used to negate an adjective or a noun, meaning it is used to say that something is not a certain way. Since we are describing the answer as 'not correct' rather than saying it doesn't exist, we must use değil. If you wanted to say 'There is no correct answer,' you would use yok: Doğru cevap yok.
Why is değil placed at the very end of the sentence?
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Turkish, there is no standalone word for 'is' or 'are'. When talking about 'it' (the third person singular), the 'is' is usually invisible and just understood from the context. Saying Bu cevap doğru değil literally maps to 'This answer correct not', which naturally means 'This answer is not correct'.
